The Inaugurations Money Shots–All 220 Of Them!

dc-gigapan-pano.jpg

Before the inauguration I wrote about CNN and Microsoft’s plan for a Photosynth shot of “The Moment.” Boring. Sorry guys I was expecting a lot more and I’d be dishonest if I didn’t say I was disappointed. If I had it to do over I’d tell you instead to be on the lookout for David Bergman’s panorama. His is the money shot!

Covering 194.19 degrees of width, 80.09 degrees height this composite is nearly 1.5 gigapixels–59,783 X 24,658 pixels! No one camera or lens could provide that kind of resolution so Bergman relied on 220 separate shots.

Got A DSLR? Control Your Shutter For Less Blur

IMG_6177.jpg
I love my camera. To prove it, I took around 1,000 photos this week. OK–I’m obsessed. Shoot me. Often when I’m out I’ll run into other amateur shooters. I always peek to see if their camera is set on “AUTO.” Usually it is.

I know why you’re not trying things. Fear! Don’t be fearful. There is little bad you can do by turning the knobs and pressing buttons. Getting back to a safe setting is always easy–honest.

If you’re shooting in “AUTO” I can almost guarantee you’re getting blurry shots from time-to-time. Of all the things that can go bad blur seems the worst. There’s little you can do to correct it after-the-fact. That’s why my goal is to shoot at a fast enough shutter speed to keep things sharp.

Macro Means Youll Get Up Close With Your Photos

kathy-nemec-lucas-snowflake-w400-h400.jpg
Kathy Nemec-Lucas‘ snowflake at the top of this entry is a beautiful example of macro photography (here’s a larger version). If your camera has a pictograph of a flower on it (most point-and-shoot cameras do) or your DSLR has a lens with the word macro on it this is a type of photo you can take!

Let’s define terms first. Macro photograph is really nothing more than close-up photography. Typically in macro photography the image seen by your sensor is at least 50% of its real size–abbreviated 1:2. Some macro lenses can bring you 1:1 or more! Unfortunately, companies in pursuit of quick sales have taken it upon themselves to ‘dumb down’ the entire macro concept. Be careful.

Gearlog and Sony DSC-T177 at Obama Inauguration

Inauguration_Obama_Podium_2

I managed to score a seat for President Obama’s Inauguration–and I brought along the new Sony DSC-T77 camera. I chose the DSC-T77 because it has an intuitive a touch-screen interface that made it easy to figure out various functions, (which was great, because I had never used the camera before).

After a harrowing 7 hours of travel via car, subway, and sneakers from northern Virginia, I managed to reach my seat, which was about 250 yards from the podium. The 10 .1-megapixel point-and-shoot took some great pictures, and I was able to use the camera’s touch screen to zoom in for a great view of the new president and other luminaries after took my shots.

I had been skeptical of touch-screen camera interfaces, but being able to touch the display and zoom in up to 8X was crucial. That way I knew exactly what I had in the shot very quickly and whether I had to take it again–clutch, especially at a historical moment like this one.

Hope you enjoy the shots–more after the jump.

President Obama…From Space!

obamainuagspace.jpg

While my dreams of a television action series featuring Barack Obama fighting intergalactic criminals in space have once again been put on hold, science has happily given us the next best thing: Obama, from Space.

Google’s Earth and Maps-making satellite, the Geo-Eye-1, was 423 miles above the earth’s surface yesterday, taking shots of President Obama’s historical inauguration ceremony. It was a clear day, and the shots are pretty impressive, featuring millions of viewers packed into the Washington Mall.

Check out more, higher res photos at the official Geo-Eye site.

ULTRACLAMP Is A Cheap Gift For Your Camera

ULTRACLAMP.jpg

“Pleasantly surprised.” These are two words I enjoy, but seldom get to include in a post. Let’s roll-em-out today because I am pleasantly surprised by how much I like my $20 ULTRACLAMP. “Really Geoff,” my inner voice shouts. “Do you really think the “ULTRACLAMP” deserves an entry?”

Oh yeah! It is now my favorite product from Redmond, Washington.

CES 2009: Sony Intros HD Pocket Camcorder

sonyMHS-CM1-

No, it’s not a Web site award show–the Webbie is actually Sony’s new entry into the ever-broadening world of pocket camcorders.

The Webbie MHS-CM1 has an upright form factor similar to other entries in the space, like the Flip and Vado. It has a 2.5-inch LCD and a lens with 5X optical zoom (a vast improvement over most other company’s 2X digital), which swivels up to 270-degrees.

The camera also has a number of scene selection modes, include low-light and sport. Oh, and it can also take 5MB still photos.

Like RCA and Kodak‘s recent entries into the field, the MHS-CM1 is a slick-looking, slim camcorder. Users can pick from three colors: eggplant, orange, and silver. The camera’s looking like a pretty strong contender for best in class.

CES 2009: RCA Intros Thin Small Wonder EZ209HD

rcaEZ209HD.gif

It seems like everywhere I turn around at this trade show, I see yet another pocket camcorder. RCA, who has been operating in the field for a while now, used the occasion to launch its latest version of the Small Wonder, the EZ209HD.

I had the opportunity to play around with a prototype of the camera, and I have to say, it’s easily the best looking (and slimmest) model the company has produced in the space–in fact, in the looks department, this thing rival’s Kodak’s newly introduced ZX1.

The camera shoots in HD and features a 2-inch LCD and an SD card slot. The unit also has a built-in rechargeable lithium ion battery and an HDMI port. It’ll street for $119.99.
