Nikon COOLPIX S01: The Teeny Tiny Camera

Marketing a new digital camera can be problematic these days, since most people are happy to snap photos with their smartphones. It’s only when you take a lot of photos that you realize that the camera sensor on your phone might not be good enough for every situation. The Nikon COOLPIX S01 hasn’t got the biggest sensor, but it’s diminuitive size will make it easy to carry around as an adjunct to your smartphone’s camera.

The COOLPIX S01 has a 1/3 inch CCD sensor that has a resolution of 10.1 MP and a 3x optical zoom lens. It weighs only 96 grams (3.38 oz) and measures 3.03″ × 2″ × 2/3″ in size. In order to reduce its size, Nikon chose to use a built-in battery and eliminate the SD slot. The camera comes with 7.3 GB of internal storage instead, which should be plenty unless you plan on shooting massive amounts of 720p video with it. All controls and dials have been removed so that the camera is completely controlled by its 2.5″ touchscreen.

The COOLPIX S01 will be available in September for $180 in mirror, pink, red, black and white.

Kodak to sell the film business that made it so famous

Kodak selling film business

Kodak is selling off its renowned film arm in order to revive its moribund fortunes. It’ll join sales of the company’s patent portfolio, online gallery, commercial scanning, photo kiosk and theme park businesses so it can concentrate on a not-yet successful printer enterprise. It needs to raise more than $660 million to pay back creditors before it can emerge from Chapter 11, which it aims to do early next year — but not in any form that we’re likely to recognize.

Nikon Coolpix S800c Camera Gets Android Assimilated

It looks like resisting Android really is futile with the operating system making its way into just about everything these days. Nikon has unveiled a bunch of new cameras and the most interesting is the Coolpix S800c. This camera runs the Android 2.3 operating system and has integrated Wi-Fi.

nikon coolpix s800c

With Android as the operating system and built-in Wi-Fi, the idea is the camera can be used to upload photos and full HD resolution video directly to social networking sites. The camera has a 3.5-inch rear touchscreen for viewing photographs and entering comments on pictures you want to upload. The camera also supports Google Play and has integrated apps for things like email, contacts and a calendar.

Nikon plans to launch an app for other Android and iOS devices that will allow users to wirelessly send photographs taken with the camera to other devices as well. The camera has 10x optical zoom, integrated lens-shift vibration reduction, and 16-megapixel resolution. It also has integrated GPS for geo-tagging images. The Coolpix S800c will retail for $349.95, and should be available very soon.

Instacube: The Dedicated Instagram Photo Frame

Have you ever wanted a dedicated device to navigate your Instagram feeds? Well, Instagram addicts rejoice, because D2M is working on something they call Instacube, which will allow you to do exactly that and more!

instacube instagram photo frame

Instacube is basically a digital photo frame specifically made to display and interact with Instagram photo feeds in real time. The 6.5-inch touchscreen has a special 600 × 600 resolution display, allowing you to view the photos as high as Instagram permits. That’s a bit odd, in my opinion, for what happens when Instagram updates to a larger resolution?

You can tap between pictures, and type when needed using the on-screen keyboard. There are dedicated tactile buttons on top which power the device on and off, switch feeds, and a heart-shaped button for liking photos. It’s powered by Android and comes with 4GB of storage as well as 256MB of RAM. It keeps connected to Instagram via Wi-Fi. The rechargeable battery allows you to move about with it.

Instacube is currently raising funds for production over on Kickstarter, and you can get your hands on one of the first 1,000 Instacubes for $99(USD), a $50 discount off the regular retail price.

Anatomical Portraits Go Beyond Skin Deep

I’m sure you’ve seen anatomical models of the different human systems when you took biology in high school. There’s the good, old skeletal system and of course, the muscular system.

Maybe Koen Hauser had these lessons in mind when he came up with his recent series, because they’re creative, different, and probably all anatomically correct.

Anatomy Portrait

Dubbed the ‘Modische Atlas der Anatomie’ or the ‘Fashionable Atlas of Anatomy’ when translated, the series features digital manipulations that literally strip the skin off of the models to reveal the organs and muscles underneath.

The images exude contrasting elements, with models posing in a relaxed manner while their bones and tendons are revealed in the same image.

Even more impressive is the fact that he came up with this series and published it over a decade ago.

With this series, Koen was able to masterfully and artistically combine both science and art into one neat package.

Raspberry Pi Embedded in Battery Grip Smartens up DSLR

Do you use an extra battery grip for your DSLR? Since they can be kind of bulky anyhow, Irish photographer Dave Hunt managed to squeeze a fully-functioning Raspberry Pi SBC inside his detachable battery grip, and programmed it so that it would push the images he takes to his iPad for easy viewing. Sounds pretty awesome to me.

It’s very useful to have a general purpose computer attached to your digital camera. The pros do it all the time when they do shoots indoors. This setup allows you to check out the photos you have just taken on a portable high resolution screen, an iPad. Dave managed to get this working for his Canon 5D Mark II camera, using the Raspberry Pi, a Wi-Fi dongle and  a Perl script to push the images.

In addition to sending images to the iPad, the on-board computer could be used for everything from remote operation, to rapid image format conversion, to automatically timing time-lapse sequences. If you’ve got the skills, and get  your hands on a Raspberry Pi, then you can the mod for yourself. Dave explains in detail how he went about his hack on his blog.

The Walking Dead Infects Disney Princesses

Warning: Before scrolling down, we recommend that you move to a place where there are no kids (both young and old) nearby, because the consequences and ramifications might be serious.

If you grew up reading fairy tales and watching Disney’s cartoons, then you know that they’ll usually end in happily ever after. But what if they somehow got bitten by one of the undead from The Walking Dead?

Disney ZombiesI don’t think the zombies would spare the princesses if Disney ever got hit by a zombie apocalypse. And to show everyone what would become of Ariel, Snow White, and Cinderella, artist extraordinaire Witit Karpkraikaew drew up these eerie images of the undead princesses.

As you can see above, the skin is just melting from Ariel’s frame. And here’s Snow White, looking not-so-white or pure with brains instead of an apple.

Disney Zombies2

Cinderella is the darkest of the three, as she wields an ax and is chewing on her otherwise missing glass slipper for a quick snack.

Disney Zombies1

Witit’s DeviantArt page has been hit with comments and requests for more zombie princesses. I personally would love to see a zombie Belle, from Beauty and the Beast.

Mobi Lens Clips onto Just About Any Smartphone or Tablet Camera

Add-on lenses for smartphones are one of the easiest ways of improving your mobile photography. I’ve seen some magnetic lenses, but what happens when your precious phone is hidden away underneath a protective case? Mobi-Lens comes to the rescue with an interesting design for a clip-on lens that will solve your woes.

Mobi-Lens is a clip-on lens system for mobile devices that features a lens on each side. You’ll have access to a fisheye and macro/wide-angle lens depending on which side you favor. While the design isn’t the most elegant, it does seem quite functional and versatile, thanks to its spring-loaded, Chip-Clip style design.

The Mobi-Lens was launched as a Kickstarter crowd-funded project, and you’ll need to pledge at least $30(USD) to get a single lens, and $60 or more for the two lens combo pack.

Nikon 1 J2 Interchangeable Lens Camera Debuts

Nikon has announced a new interchangeable lens digital mirrorless camera as a follow-up to last year’s popular, but less-than-perfect J1. The new Nikon 1 J2 camera is available in six colors and uses an all-metal body along with several updated features.

nikon 1 j2

The camera is capable of recording full HD video and has an image resolution of 8.3 megapixels – which is actually lower than the 10.1MP J1, so it’s not clear if the J2 is a replacement for the J1 or if it’s an additional model in the line. The camera has an ISO range of 100-3200 and can shoot with fixed focus at 60 FPS. The shutter promises to be very fast thanks to what Nikon claims to be the one of the fastest autofocus systems around. The camera has a three-inch rear LCD with a resolution of 921,000 dots.

The camera is fitted with the Nikon EXPEED 3 image processor and has a number of automatic and artistic modes. The camera can also shoot still photos while recording full HD video. Pricing and availability on the camera are unknown at this time.

‘This is Now’ Lets You See Moments as They Unfold – on Instagram

Life moves in mysterious ways. (And yes, you caught me, I totally stole that line from a song.) One moment you might feel like you’re on top of the world, then something happens to bring you down to your very lowest.

Before you start thinking that your life sucks or that your world is about to end – take a second to look at the world and life through someone else’s eyes.

This is NowWhy? Because it just might give you the perspective you need to push past whatever it is you’re going through right now. And also to show you that hey, the world’s still spinning around, and whatever problem you have – no matter how big or small – doesn’t spell the end of it.

You can do just that by checking out This is Now, a site that displays Instagram photos from five major cities of the world as they’re posted in real-time. The project was thought up by Marcio PugaMauricio Massaia and Per Thoresson and uses Instagram’s API to access and display them for the whole world to see. Here’s how they describe their project, in their own words:

The This is Now project is a visual composition which uses real-time updates from the ever popular Instagram application based on users’ geotag locations. The tool streams photos instantly as soon as they are uploaded on Instagram and captures a city’s movement, in a fluid story.

Get out of your shell and see the world in other’s people’s eyes on This is Now.
