Paparazzo Light: The Ultimate Flash for iPhones

So you’ve gotten tired of using your iPhone’s flash. It does its job alright, but it’s nothing compared to a Nikon speedlight. That’s why the Paparazzo Light might make sense. It will make your iPhone a whole lot bulkier, but at least you’ll be able to take decent pics at night.

The Paparazzo Light is powered by a 300 Lumen LED that has two CR 123 batteries and has three different modes for brightness settings, for use in photos and vids. The examples that the team behind the flash have shown are quite compelling, so it definitely has some uses if you use your iPhone a lot. It snaps onto the base of the iPhone 4 or 4S, and can be easily removed and tossed in your bag when not in use – though it doesn’t look like it will work with most third-party cases.

At the time of writing, it had amassed $4,500 out of a projected goal of $50,000 with 27 days to go. A pledge of at least $45(USD) will get you one of the first Paparazzo iPhone lights.

Mophie Outride Protects Your iPhone During Action Photography

Whatever sports or activities you’re into, it’s often nice to be able share your exploits with others via video. For many people who are into auto sports, bicycling, motocross, or other activities where there’s a high chance of falling or crashing ruggedized cameras specifically for the task are the norm. Rather than spending money on something like a GoPro camera, mophie has announced a new iPhone case that will do the trick for you called the Outride.

mophie outride

The Outride is a polycarbonate case for the iPhone 4 and 4S that is ruggedized and waterproof. The case is durable enough to survive crashes and drops and water resistant enough to film water sports. The case has a 170° wide-angle lens designed specifically to capture action shots. The case also comes with an app that allows the editing and sharing videos taken using the iPhone and the case, though it’s not clear what advantages it offers over the iPhone’s built in camera app or iMovie.

Expected this September, the Outride case will sell in bundles priced at $129.95 up to $149.95 (USD). Presumably, the difference in bundles will be based on the type of mounts included.

MIRAGE Substitutional Reality System: One Step Closer to Total Recall

This “substitutional reality system” was developed by the Japanese Laboratory for Adaptive Intelligence at the RIKEN Brain Science Institute. It was created to fuse performance art with perceived reality for its wearer. While it’s doesn’t produce the sort of directly implanted memories seen in Total Recall, the visual and audio portions are immersive enough to trick your mind anyhow.

The headgear is supposed to seamlessly meld the live video with recordings from the past as well as performances from dancers. Sounds groovy. It combines fiction and reality, making them indecipherable from each other. It’s definitely an interesting conundrum, not being able to tell if what you’re seeing is in fact real, just a recording or a hybrid of both.

The MIRAGE is a unique take on augmented reality, though I’m sure under the right circumstances, it could be used to brainwash people. You still want to try it out?

Samsung Now Shipping NX1000 Smart Camera

I really like my DSLR camera as far as the photo quality goes, but I hate lugging that heavy beast around. I’ve had an eye out for a new more compact digital camera that can offer similar image quality and many people are doing the same thing. Samsung has announced that it is now shipping its NX1000 SMART camera system promising professional image quality and more in a compact package.

Samsung nx1000

The mirrorless, interchangeable lens camera comes with an all-purpose 20 to 50 mm lens and an external flash. The rear LCD is a three-inch, VGA resolution screen. The large APS-C image sensor has 20.3-megapixel resolution and the shutter is very fast at up to 1/4000 of a second. That means you can actually get shots of your kids rather than just an ear or an elbow. In addition to hi-res stills, the camera can record 1080p (30fps) HD video

One of the coolest things about the NX1000 for me is that it has integrated Wi-Fi which allows you to instantly share photos on your favorite social networks or save them to a computer to free up more space on your memory card. The camera has a dedicated Smart Link Hot Key on the top for shooting photos to another device via Wi-Fi. The camera comes in black or white bodies (and is coming soon in pink) and is available right now for $649.99(USD) over on Amazon.

System Automatically Recognizes Baked Goods Without Labels or RFID

In the not-too-distant future, technology might let you check out for your purchases without any need to scan tags, enter prices, or even read RFID tags. Thanks to visual recognition technology, items being purchased could be automatically identified just by the way they look.

bakery scanner

A trial is underway at a bakery in Tokyo using Brain Corporation’s object recognition technology to automatically ring up items for purchase just by setting them onto a tray. A camera grabs an image of the items, and checks a database to match up the baked goods with their pricing. It works surprisingly well handling subtle variants of the same item – like 2 different loaves of bread. It’s a cool idea, and seems to work quite well in this particular application.

While I like the general concept, I could see problems with the system if you start dealing with multiple items that look the same on the outside, but have different insides (i.e. different memory configurations on an iPhone, or in this case a cherry croissant vs. a chocolate one.) Still, for items which can be identified by color, size and shape, it’s definitely got potential.

Canon EOS M Micro Four-Thirds Camera Leaked: Canon’s First Entry in Segment

According to tipsters, patents, and a couple of Japanese websites, it looks like Canon is set to release their first Micro Four-Thirds camera very soon. For now, all that remains are the discovery of the full specs and what the camera actually looks like.

canon eos m mirrorless micro four third camera

The Canon EOS M will match other Micro Four-Thirds cameras like the Olympus E-M5 and Panasonic Lumix G. The above image might give an inkling to what the camera looks like, but it could just be a masterful exercise in Photoshop. The Japanese site Digicame-info reports that it will be named EOS M, and it does look like a thin, mirrorless camera. It is expected to come with an entirely new mount, the EF-M, which could mean that the sensor would be closer to a full APS-C than to the one used in the PowerShot G1 X. This could mean that the sensors would be bigger than other Micro Four-Thrid cameras, which would be good news.

Canon is expected to make an announcement on July 23rd, so we’ll know exactly what they have in store then.

ISERV Camera Headed to the International Space Station

The International Space Station is set to get a new camera that is specifically designed to image the Earth. The camera is called ISERV and it was launched on board the Japanese Aerospace exploration Agencies HTV-3 transfer vehicle. The camera system will be controllable from operators on the ground and will be able to take crystal clear pictures of specific areas on the Earth’s surface.

ISERV stands for International Space Station SERVIR Environmental Research and Visualization System. The camera will be installed in the Window Observational Research Facility inside the station’s Destiny laboratory. The camera portion of ISERV appears to be a standard DSLR and the massive lens is a modified commercial telescope.

Operators on the ground will be able to enter a precise location, and when the ISS passes over, images will be taken and automatically and sent back to the ground operators. The goal is to use the camera to help scientists gain operational experience and expertise to design more capable control systems in the future. The camera will also be used to monitor disasters on Earth.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5 Micro Four Third Camera Drops Into View

Panasonic just unveiled a new mid-level Micro Four Third camera, the Lumix G DMC-G5. It’s the successor to the popular G3 and packs some cool new features. These kinds of cameras take impressive photos, while being easier to lug around than a full-sized DSLR.

The DMC-G5 has a 16MP sensor, and is capable of recording video up to 1,920 × 1080 at 60p full HD video in AVCHD Progressive with stereo sound. The camera can record stills up to 6fps at a maximum ISO of 12,800. The G5′s display capabilities looks great, with a high-res live viewfinder offering an equivalent 1.4 million pixels of resolution, and a large 920k tilting LCD screen.

Phocus iPhone Case Lets You Use Your DSLR Lenses, Taking iPhonetography to the Max

There are cases that allow you to use additional lenses for your iPhone, but the Phocus case goes one step beyond those. It will let you use your DSLR lenses, either Canon or Nikon, to get the best picture possible. However, your iPhone might no longer be as compact as you would have liked.

The Phocus iPhone case does a good job of using your existing lenses, especially if you’ve already got a DSLR. The case might be best suited for photographers trying to get the most out of their iPhone, and who want to mount their smartphone on a tripod. Watch out if you’ve got big telephoto lenses though, it could get quite bulky.

The Phocus case comes in two packages, one that sells for $99.95(USD) that comes with two extra lenses and one that sells for $134.95 that comes with three. You’ll have to spend extra to get the Canon or Nikon lens adapters, which sell for $220 and $245 respectively, so it can add up really quickly.

If you’re going to spend this much money and carry around giant lenses anyhow, it makes me wonder why you don’t just use your DSLR itself.
