E Ink Holdings sales drop could spell tablet takeover

While consumer electronics sales hit peaks and valleys, when a manufacturer like E Ink Holdings reports a significant loss, it’s time to stop and pay attention. The display manufacturer reported a 46% decline in sales over the past year, with a net loss totalling $33.6 million to boot. While reporting a loss isn’t all doom […]

AOC USB Add-on Monitor Slims Down

A couple of years back, AOC released a compact USB-powered secondary display which could be easily used to extend your computer’s desktop. The $130 display was a pretty good deal then, and now AOC has improved a few features of the original with its recently released e1659Fwu portable display.

The updated display measures just 0.9″ thick vs. the 1.4″ thick original. The new model has a smartly-designed folding stand which lets you use it in either portrait or landscape modes in a snap. It’s also got standard VESA mount holes this time around. In addition, it transfers data to the screen via a fast USB 3.0 connection, vs. the USB 2.0 connection of the original.

The 15.6″ display still offers 1366×768 resolution though, and I was hoping they might bump it up to HD resolution this time. Still, it’s a handy thing to throw in your bag if you need extra display space, or if you want to mirror your primary display for presentations. To use it, simply connect it to your PC’s USB port and it works like an extra display. Mac users will need to install the latest DisplayLink driver to make it work though.

You can find the AOC e1659Fwu portable USB-powered display over at Amazon for $129.99(USD). If you don’t mind the added thickness of the original, it’s available for just $90 now.

Samsung Hennessy quad-core Android flip phone heads back to the future

Delivered at a time when the top-tier smartphones on the market have 5-inch displays and so many pixels the average consumer can no longer see them, Samsung has ushered in the dual-screen Android-toting Hennessy. LEDgoes Modular LED Display: Building Blips

An LED Matrix Display is a very affordable and versatile tool for showing information. But Stephen Wylie and Stacy Devino made an even more affordable and useful version of it. They call it LEDgoes, a display that you can expand by snapping modules together like LEGO.

Each module measures 1.5″ x 2″ and has 35 LEDs that can display red, green or yello. You can connect boards in real-time and even stack up to two rows as one. They also each have two ATMega microcontrollers as well as 26 hackable GPIO pins.

Out of the box, you can type a message to display on your LEDgoes using a PC or mobile device, or you can sync it to a Twitter or RSS feed. But because they’re ready to be hacked, you can make your own apps and display whatever you want on them.

Pledge at least $29 (USD) on Kickstarter to get a LEDgoes kit with two small display panels as a reward.

Google patent would track objects within your gaze

Google patent would track whatever falls within your gaze

Google already has a patent that would let Glass and other eyewear identify what’s in front of you. However, it just received a new patent for a method that could follow your exact gaze. The proposed system would include both forward-facing and eye-tracking cameras, correlating both to determine what’s grabbing your attention. It could gauge emotional responses to objects by watching for pupil dilation, and it could be used to charge advertisers based on how long wearers stare at a given ad. Google may also have an eyepiece upgrade to go along with its gaze detection, we’d note — the company just received a patent for a quantum dot-based eye display. There’s no evidence that Google will use either of these new inventions anytime soon, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they represent what Glass could look like a few generations from now.
