Bad news: HTC says the Nexus One doesn’t ‘go in pockets’

One of the biggest mysteries in the blogosphere right now is probably Crave’s Nexus One, which somehow developed a cracked screen while simply charging on the desk (sounds familiar, right?). Not even HTC could unearth the cause from its forensic inspection, but it didn’t rule out the possibility of a small crack growing over time due to, for example, “getting knocked around by keys” and repetitive squeezes in tight pockets. That’s fine, but saying “people sometimes forget that they don’t go in pockets” is surely stretching a bit, no? What happened to the awesomeness in the compression test and bend test that we once witnessed? More importantly, has anyone here had the same baffling screen problem and been charged £180 ($273) for the repair? If so, do share your pain with us — we’ve got a shoulder for you.

Motorola patent combines multiple devices to make one large display

It seems to us that if you indulge in mobile video from time to time, you’re either lugging around a device with a decent display size (netbook, tablet, whatevs) or more likely than not you’re watching your Britain’s Got Talent! clips on a handset — either solution is obviously less than ideal. What if we told you that Motorola has filed a patent application for a “Reconfigurable Multiple-Screen Display”? This technology will essentially let you configure multiple devices for use as one big display: Instead of lugging around your Thinkpad or suffering the indignity of watching postage stamp-sized video on your Droid you can simply and conveniently carry four phones around. Why didn’t we think of that?

Acer’s H5360 and X1261 projectors take it to the third dimension

You know who else is firmly situated on the 3D bandwagon? Acer. This fine morning the outfit has busted out two new beamers, both of which are eager and willing to be paired with NVIDIA’s 3D Vision setup for viewing in the third dimension. Outside of that, neither one is particularly awe-inspiring, but if you’ve got a 3D Blu-ray player on the brain, you might need one of these to fully complete the nerded-out basement experiment. Up first is the H5360, offering a native 1,280 x 720 resolution, a 3,200:1 contrast ratio, 2,500 ANSI lumens and an HDMI socket. The lower-end X1261 gets a lowly XGA resolution, a similar amount of brightness and a component video port. iPhone’s LCD Screen Beats Nexus One’s OLED Display

Google Nexus One’s luminous OLED screen may be state of the art when it comes to display technology in smartphones but an iPhone’s LCD screen ranks better, according to tests by DisplayMate, a firm that calibrates and optimizes displays.

“The high-resolution, high-pixel-density OLED display on the Nexus One is beautiful, even stunning on first view, but there are lots of issues, problems and artifacts lurking just below the surface,” said Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate, on the company’s blog.

Since OLED displays are still so new, they are yet to be perfected for use in consumer products, which can result in a less-than-optimal experience, he says.

Organic LED displays, or OLEDs, are gaining favor among gadget makers because they can offer a brighter display at lower power than traditional LCDs. The Nexus One has a 3.7-inch screen and a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. The iPhone 3G has a 3.5 inch display with a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels.

To test the Nexus One’s screen, DisplayMate used 24-bit native resolution 800 x 480 test patterns and 24-bit HD resolution test photos.

Their conclusions? The “peak white brightness” of the Nexus One is low for a display that used often in outdoor settings.  In terms of picture quality, the Nexus One  photos had “way too much contrast and color saturation, to the point of appearing gaudy,” says DisplayMate.

The Nexus One’s Gallery app also uses 16-bit color instead of 24-bit color, which results in poor images, says the firm.

Another reason for the Nexus One display’s performance could be the “PenTile pixel arrangement” that it uses, says Soneira. Instead of the three sub-pixels of red, green and blue for every pixel, the Nexus One’s display just divides each pixel into two. Every PenTile pixel includes a green sub-pixel, but the red and blue sub-pixels appear in alternating pixels, he says.

“In principle, that is only a minor issue because if red or blue isn’t available in a particular pixel, then the display driver can just use one from an adjacent pixel. But in practice, it makes things a lot harder for the software and makes it very likely that artifacts will creep into the on-screen images,” says Soneira.

DisplayMate suggests, among other things, Google improve the factory display calibration to correct color saturation and contrast.

Not surprisingly, the OLED Association isn’t happy with the results. The tests are flawed and just because the OLED screen does not react the same way as an LCD screen does not mean the former is inferior, Barry Young, managing director of the OLED Association told OLED-Display.net.

LG’s 15-inch 15EL9500 OLED TV sets sail for Europe, scheduled to arrive this May

We’ve had only tantalizingly brief (or is it briefly tantalizing?) chances to see LG’s glorious OLED television, but each and every time it’s left us with the feeling that our lives are poorer for not having one in our homes. Sure, that says as much about our tech addiction as it does about the 3mm-thick displays, but at least the deep-pocketed among us won’t have to wait too much longer to sate the need for 10,000,000:1 contrast ratios and 0.001ms response times. LG has announced it’ll be bringing it’s 15-inch OLED panel to Europe this May (to be swiftly followed by summer availability in the US) with a hefty MSRP sticker of €1,999 ($2,725) for the Austrian market. Nobody ever said the cutting edge was gonna be a cheap place to live.

ATI’s six-screen Eyefinity madness reviewed, fatal flaw found

Along with its introduction of the HD 5830, ATI announced the HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 card yesterday, which predictably comes with six DisplayPort outputs and enables that hallowed six-screen gaming overload that the Eyefinity branding has been about since the beginning. Some lucky scribes over at PC Pro have been treated to a live demonstration of what gaming at 5,760 x 2,160 feels like, and their understated response was to describe it as “far more immersive.” No kidding. They did raise the spectral figure of those monitor bezels, however, pointing out that bezel correction — where the image “behind the bezel” is rendered but hidden making the overall display look like a window unto the game world — habitually obscured text and game HUD elements. In their view, the sweet spot remains a triple-screen setup, and we’re inclined to agree (particularly if they look like this). Pixel Qi has ‘several more’ partners since CES, is working on new form factors

There’s nothing, nothing, we love more than talkative CEOs. And though this may not be a case of some brash smack-talking, we still appreciate Mary Lou Jepsen giving us a fresh update on the development of those delectable Pixel Qi displays. As you already know, CES provided us with our first opportunity to see one in person (in the shape of the Notion Ink Adam) and we were left highly impressed with the versatility and responsiveness of the hybrid display. Since then, Mary Lou and company have recruited a few more partners and, while production of the 10-inch units is ramping up as expected, new form factors are also being contemplated. She still won’t tell us any names, but we’re excited by the possibility of (relatively) pocketable Pixel Qi devices — how does a Dell Mini 5 with a 40-hour battery life sound?

AIST shows off see-through display prototype on video

Face it, folks — the days of windows being just windows are behind us. Before long, our panes will double as widget displays or makeshift televisions, and AIST has the prototype to prove it. The demonstration seems to utilize technology that’s far different than that seen in Samsung’s iceTouch PMP, but it’s certainly no less exciting. According to DigInfo, AIST is developing florescent glass suitable for excitation by near-UV LEDs, and by combining this [borosilicate] glass with LEDs, it’s possible to obtain transparent, flat light sources.” Better still, we’re told that the prevailing thought is that this here technology could be used to develop see-through displays as well as “light sources and displays that use solar cells without modification.” Anxious to see what a transparent LCD could do for you? MSI converges everything with 24-inch 3D HD Wind Top all-in-one

Now here’s a spec sheet maven’s dream: MSI has just announced its new Wind Top all-in-ones, and the top model brings every modern spec you can think of. Full HD resolution, 3D capabilities with 120Hz refresh rates, Intel processors up to Core i7, and even multitouch adorn its list of goodies. The new flagships will be known as the Wind Top AE2420 in the 24-incher category and AE2280 in the 22-inch class. They’re joined by a selection of high-efficiency machines, such as the AP1920 and AE1920, which promise to cut down the electricity bills for “environmentally-minded business users.” That’s still hardly scratching the surface, though, as MSI is really preparing a small army of AIOs to display at CeBIT, and you can bet the house we’ll be there to touch and ogle at their latest and greatest.

LG’s in-cell multitouch laptop displays get unveiled, certified with Windows 7 Touch Logo (video)

Want evidence for the old saying that there’s always something next to wait around for with technology? We’ve only just reviewed the most bodacious X200 Tablet from Lenovo, yet already there’s a capacitive multitouch display that promises to be that little bit better. LG’s in-cell multitouch technology places the touchy-feely parts inside — rather than as a film on top of — the LCD panel, which we’re told eliminates the loss of picture quality and brightness that regular multitouch results in. It only works with two fingers so far, but LG is still pretty pleased with itself for being the first to gain the Windows 7 Touch Logo sticker with this technology, which was previously limited to cellphone-sized displays. Mass production is set for the second half of this year, and we’ll go ahead and assume that local nemesis Samsung will be using every moment until then to offer its own competing models.
