U.R.Celeb: Appear on the Cover of Magazines

This article was written on January 02, 2008 by CyberNet.

This is another one of those “just for fun” kinds of things: U.R. Celeb is a program that you can download to create your own covers for magazines like People, Rollingstone, Sports Illustrated, and more. That means even you too can appear on the cover of your favorite magazine, or be the topic of the latest breaking news on CNN. There are templates for the following different magazines:

  • CNN
  • Cosmopolitan
  • Enquirer
  • National Geographic
  • People
  • Playboy
  • Rollingstone
  • Sports Illustrated
  • Time
  • TVguide
  • Vogue

Below is an example that I created using the CNN “Breaking News” template. I was able to change the picture as well as the caption text, and the scrolling text that you’d see on the bottom of your TV screen:

ur celeb

Some of the magazine covers offer a lot more options to customize the text. Inserting an image and text is done with just a click, so creating these magazine covers is really simple.  Once you’re done you can save it or print it. If you’d like to make your own, just go here and download U.R. Celeb.

Microsoft Creates Colored Barcodes

This article was written on April 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

Color BarcodeMicrosoft has created a new bar code system that replaces the standard black and white vertical bars with specific patterns of colored triangles. By doing this they are able to pack in more information into such a small space.

The High Capacity Color Bar Code should start appearing on DVD’s already by the end of this year. Once implemented the bar code would be able to store information like URL’s and other information that could be related to the CD/DVD. This would be especially useful when deciding whether to purchase a movie or music CD because it can be attached to a computer at a store so that you can visit the homepage.

This does, of course, require special hardware to scan the bar code so the transition could be costly for companies. It even takes more costly hardware to print the bar codes which is something else that could drive the price of goods up.

Having worked at a retail store I can see real value in such a system. We came across people all of the time who tried to print their own UPC’s for products and place them over an item’s UPC. That way when the cashier rings up the item it is for something else at a much lower cost. Being able to replicate these new color bar codes could spell disaster for scammers utilizing this method of “bar code switching”.

Helpful Tip: Disable UAC for a Program in Vista

This article was written on May 23, 2008 by CyberNet.

disable uac vista.pngI’ve read about how a lot of people have chosen to disable User Account Control (UAC) in Vista because of the headaches that can result from it. That’s mostly because of applications that have not yet been programmed to run in a general user mode, and they are still accustomed to running as a privileged user just as they did in XP.

If you’ve chosen to leave UAC enabled then there are a few different ways you can selectively bypass the UAC prompt without disabling it all together. One way is to take ownership of files, but there is also another rather clever method that takes advantage of the Task Scheduler. Here’s some background as to how it works:

Few days ago I tried to run some scheduled task that required admin privileges. After some investigation I found out that you can specify that scheduled task can run using highest privileges.

These scheduled tasks don’t prompt you with UAC. First idea that came to my mind was – OK, so if scheduled task runs on demand, then it should in fact disable UAC for specific program? I tried it and it worked… So for some time I was using on demand scheduled tasks – for example instead of running MMC I run Schtasks /Run /TN “Elevated\MMC”.

The end result is a context menu entry that shows up whenever you right-click on a file or shortcut (as pictured above). It’s labeled “Elevate me,” and works exactly as advertised. When you select that option from the menu the program runs as an administrator without a single UAC prompt.

To confirm this I ran the command line and tried to release my IP address. When running the command line normally it wouldn’t let me make the change, but using the “Elevate me” option made it possible to release my IP. And I never had a UAC prompt asking if I wanted to confirm the action.

You can also turn this into a shortcut so that you won’t even have to right-click on a file to elevate it, but you really only have to do that if a particular program always needs to run as an administrator.

Is DRM Finally on the Way Out?

This article was written on April 27, 2007 by CyberNet.

DRM FreePretty big news was just released by MacRumors.com which mentions a recent notice that Apple sent out to all iTunes partners who sell music on the iTunes store. The message said:

Many of you have reached out to iTunes to find out how you can make your songs available higher quality and DRM-free. Starting next month, iTunes will begin offering higher-quality, DRM-free music and DRM-free music videos to all customers.

That’s right! Apple will be offering music publishers the chance to make their content DRM-free! Is this finally the momentum that is needed to fully eliminate DRM? I’m thinking that it could be since companies and artists will want to compete with each other.

All of this has started because EMI (an independent music company in London) drew up a deal to have their entire catalog of music placed on iTunes store without the DRM, and at higher quality. That is something many independent artists have requested since it will encourage users to buy their music.

Now we just have to hope that this will spark a domino effect…and that DRM will come tumbling down!

Next Zune Firmware Update Expected Mid-March

This article was written on March 01, 2007 by CyberNet.

ZuneWe haven’t really heard much about the Zune since it launched, other than an update here and there. The last we heard was when it became Vista Compatible back in December. The latest news is that Update 1.3 will be available soon.

According to Zune Insider, around March 20th, or mid-march, Zune Firmware update 1.3 will be available with a few new changes. The changes they list include:

  • We’re fixing the skipping problem that some users were experiencing – that is, content acquired from Zune Marketplace will no longer skip when played on the device.
  • Improved device and software reliability, when it comes to device detection, and improved sync’ing.
  • We’ve made some changes to the FM Tuner so it no longer drains the battery when in sleep mode.

People have been waiting patiently for this update, and from the sounds of it, people are already disappointed with the slim list of changes. They expected more features from Microsoft, but it appears Microsoft focused more on the bugs.

Free Music Downloads

This article was written on August 09, 2007 by CyberNet.

RIAA Toilet PaperWouldn’t it be nice to get some free music downloads with no strings attached? That’s something many of us long for, and it’s the same thing that the RIAA despises. One of the places where I can legally download free music is a site that one of my friends told me about, and it’s called PureVolume. There they have a wide variety of artists (both signed and unsigned) that have songs available for download. They may not be people you’ve heard about, but I’ve found a lot of really good music on there from many different genres.

If you can’t find anything there that you like, Mahalo has put together a lengthy guide on downloading free music. They discuss using services like The Hype Machine, SeeqPod, Elbo.ws, Del.icio.us, Google, and even the BitTorrent network as sources of getting some tunes at no cost.

I had known about the Google trick before, but the Del.icio.us trick was what really caught my attention. By adding some parameters onto the URL you are able to filter bookmarks based upon the file extension they point to. Here’s how it works:

  1. Create a custom search by typing http://del.icio.us/tag/system:filetype:mp3 into the URL box. This will bring up a list of all of the MP3s on del.icio.us.
  2. In order to search for music from a specific artist, add "+ArtistName" to the end of the URL. (i.e. http://del.icio.us/tag/system:filetype:mp3+Radiohead).
  3. Right-click on the link and choose "Save Link As" in order to download the file.

Now how cool is that? I tried doing searches for a lot of different artists, but didn’t come up with many results. So don’t expect this to be a gold mine, but it is still pretty cool.

The Google trick is similar in how it works:

  1. Typing: -inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:"index of" mp3 "White Stripes" into the Google search box will bring up directories that contain songs by The White Stripes. You can replace "White Stripes" with the name of the artist you’re looking for.

This used to be a pretty effective method for finding music back when it was first discovered. You would browse through sites in an FTP-like manner and download the songs straight from their servers. However, there are a lot of spammers out there now that have created similar sites that are only made to redirect you to somewhere else that is infested with "click the monkey and win" ads.

If you’re looking for more ways to download some free music, head on over to Mahalo where you’ll find a great guide awaiting you. If you’ve got a great place you get free music from let us know in the comments (yes, we already know about BitTorrent :) ).

AVG 8 Free Available, Not Bad Actually

This article was written on April 25, 2008 by CyberNet.

avg 8 free-4.png

We were getting quite a few tips over the last day regarding the new version of AVG free that was just released. As you might recall AVG 8.0 Pro was made available several months ago, and it is a pretty comprehensive security suite. It wasn’t bad, but to me it seemed pretty bloated.

Now the free version of AVG 8.0 is available, and I gave it a whirl real quick to see what it all included. I actually like the free version better than the paid version because it seems a lot simpler. It includes the antivirus and anti-spyware portions which are very important, and excludes the anti-spam, firewall, and anti-rootkit. The parts it excludes are things most people can live without out.

There are a few things that actually really impressed me though. The first being that I was able to install AVG 8 Free and get it running without ever being required to restart my computer. That’s a huge plus in my book because having to restart after installing a program can really be a pain.

And then there is memory usage. To my surprise AVG 8 Free was pretty light on its toes. After running it for about 15-minutes it was only using up about 1.8MB. When I started to perform a full system scan the process took up about 18MB, and used a little over 20% of my processor consistently. Not bad at all, and my system still felt very responsive.

If you’re already using AVG then I think it’s worth taking the upgrade, but I don’t think this offers a whole lot to grab new new users if they’re already sitting happy with Avast or another free antivirus solution. The new interface is definitely way better than AVG 7 though.

Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Convert Images to ASCII Art, in Color!

This article was written on October 10, 2007 by CyberNet.

Image to ASCII Converter

Being the geeks that we are I’m sure you’ve tried at one time or another to create some sweet ASCII art. When you look at some of the ASCII art that has been done it almost looks like it should be simple, but there is an insane amount of time that is spent getting the spacing and character density just right.

You can now be the envy of all your geeky followers friends by generating your very own gallery of ASCII art. We’re not talking something as simple as the last trick we showed you either, instead this is a full-blown software application. It’s called ASCII Generator, and I found out about it today while doing our Daily Downloads. After I looked into it I knew that I had to give it a shot.

The nice thing is that ASCII Generator is an open source project, and doesn’t require any installation to run it. Once you have loaded an image into the generator it will pump a bunch of text into the main content area. There is the “Size” option on the top toolbar that can be used to decide how many characters are on every line, and the more characters you have the more detail you’ll see.

Once you’ve got all of the settings adjusted you’ll be able to save your artwork as an image or text file. The sweet thing is that it also adds color to the text to help give the ASCII art a more photo-like effect.

Below you’ll see an image that I converted of an extremely colorful garden. I set the Size as large as it would go so that I could capture as much detail in the photo as possible. Think about how long it would have taken to make something like that without the generator. :D
