Motorola Droid Zap gets new look, Assist brings hands-free SMS replies

Life-sized White Chocolate R2-D2 Is the Ultimate Gastro-mech Droid

This 150 pound R2-D2 is an amazing confectionery creation. This droid is life-sized and resides in the lobby of The Fairmont San Jose hotel, where they encourage visitors to come into the lobby and take a selfie with it.

This R2-D2 replica was created by their Pastry Chef Fernando Arreola and was inspired by the Star Wars Exposition at the Tech Museum across the Street. The Chef used 150lbs. of White Chocolate Fondant to create this tasty gastro-mech delight.

The scarf is a nice touch and I love all of the details. I would just need a restraining bolt to keep me from eating it all up. They did a fantastic job on this one.

R2-D2 Christmas Wreath: Astromech the Halls

Your Star Wars themed Christmas just got a new piece of decor. Check out Amy Radcliffe’s R2-D2 wreath. It’s the wreath those impressionable Stormtroopers have been looking for.

The colors match the droid and are nice and metallic. The red balls at the top are a nice touch too since they match R2′s red indicator light. And of course you have to have an R2-D2 figure at the bottom. Awesome job, Amy. But this will attract those pesky Jawas. Set out some cookies for them.

You could make one of these yourselves using Amy’s step-by-step instructions. After all, it’s not enough to watch the Star Wars Holiday Special. A true fan must live the holiday special.

Motorola DROIDs Undergo Soak Test

Motorola DROIDs Undergo Soak TestAh, soak tests, don’t you just love being invited to some of those? Motorola has started to test upcoming software updates by carrying out a soak test. The installation process of the software is limited to just a tiny number of units, and even then, it is by invitation only. This is not due to a discriminatory process, but rather, Motorola most probably wants to limit the number of handsets which might actually end up bricked if things go awry. After all, if there happens to be issues with this particular update for DROID handsets, only a small number would “suffer”, so to speak. If you would like to have your smartphone take part in the test, you would have to be a member of the Motorola Feedback Network, and will have to make sure that everything concerning the test would remain confidential.

The models from Motorola that will undergo this soak test would be the Motorola DROID Ultra, Motorola DROID MAXX and the Motorola DROID Mini. We are not sure just yet as to when the test will be over, but Motorola could “soak” the trio with Android 4.4 KitKat, although there is also every chance that it could be something else entirely.

Star Wars R2-D2 Navigator Vehicle Graphic: R2-D2 Where Are You?

Astromech droids are like GPS navigation systems for X-Wing pilots. Plus they can help to fix your ship on the fly and just keep you company. They are great to have docked into your hull. If only we had Astromech droids for our cars. Here is a way to at least make it look like you do.

This R2-D2 astromech droid graphic is easy to install on your car and sticks to virtually all surfaces, although it looks best on the trunk of your vehicle – not on the hood. It includes R2-D2, an optional arm extension, a blast mark to reveal the open wiring of your ship, a control panel, and of course the Star Wars logo.

Yes, it would be better as a 3-dimensional object, but it is still pretty cool. It will make you feel like Luke, with R2 keeping you company on the back of your car.

Motorola tablet up next from Verizon: DROID all but confirmed

With the DROID Ultra and the DROID Maxx out in stores now aside the DROID Mini, there’s not much else Motorola can do in the smartphone space – save the Moto X, of course. But what about tablets? This week the folks at Droid Landing have all but confirmed their intent to release a Motorola […]

Motorola DROID 5 leak shows QWERTY slider reborn

If touch keyboards aren’t your thing, new pics leaked today that supposedly show the Motorola Droid 5 sporting a QWERTY slider keyboard ought to pique your interest. The photos show the slider lacking the capacitive buttons the previous gen phone had with the addition of wireless charging and a shockproof water resistant design. Other features […]

Motorola’s New Keyboard-Packing Droid 5 Reportedly Caught On Film

    droid5-1

Motorola just showed off three new Droid smartphones last month (or, if you prefer, one new Droid and two spinoffs), but it’s apparently not done cranking out Verizon hardware just yet. Another new Motorola device clad in Verizon livery was spotted in a batch of newly leaked images from Chinese social network Weibo, and it seems to hearken back to the Droid line’s roots.

Unlike the trim, all-touch smartphones that Motorola has been enamored with lately, the most eye-catching feature of the alleged Droid 5 is the same sort of slide-out QWERTY keyboard its forebears also had. According to Engadget, the D5 also has a display between 4.3 and 4.5 inches and a body that’s resistant to dust and water.

I know, I know, it seems a little yawn-worthy at first glance (even for sliding keyboard suckers like me). Curiously enough, that big five-row keyboard isn’t the only difference between whatever this is and the other Droids that have just started hitting store shelves. One of the images depicts a camera interface complete with a discrete shutter button on the touchscreen, a UI flourish that doesn’t exist on either the Moto X or the Droid Ultra. That super-simple, touch-anywhere approach to snapping photos on the go is a feature Motorola brass have been talking up for a while now, so it’s quite surprising to see that the company may be mulling a reversion toward the mean.

If we’re lucky, that just means Motorola is still trying to lock down some of its UI experiences… though arguably a solution the company already worked out was the better way to go. The grimmer scenario is that the Droid 5 outright lacks some of the niceties its cousins have, which is certainly one way to compartmentalize a product portfolio. At this point there are still more questions than answers, but judging by the fit and finish of the phone in those images, it shouldn’t be too long before Motorola officially springs this thing on us and all our questions are answered.
