Three Steps You Can Take to Protect Yourself From Online Spying

The recent PRISM scandal has validated both the general public’s growing unease with federal law enforcement agencies, and many of the fringe element’s accusations about Big Brother’s online behavior. Whether or not it’s legal under the PATRIOT Act, just knowing that the government can rummage through your online life doesn’t sit well with many folks. Here are some simple and effective ways of keeping your digital identity anonymous and your data your own.

Latest experimental Dropbox build adds auto screenshot uploads, iPhoto import

Latest experimental Dropbox build adds auto screenshot uploads, iPhoto import

Dropbox’s next move may be to take over your favorite screenshot sharing service, as the latest experimental build of its app adds the ability to upload screenshots automatically to your Dropbox folder. And that’s not all! The latest build also adds iPhoto import functionality, which offers synchronization between local iPhoto libraries and your Dropbox account (it’s only supported on the OS X version, of course, and only works with iPhoto 7.0 or higher), which are then viewable on the web.

Of course, this stuff may never make it into the next release of the Dropbox app given the beta-esque nature of this release, but it sounds extremely likely that it will given the company’s wording. At very least, these features won’t hit wide, final-release until some point after the next update (the update after this next one, to be clear). Head past the break for the full, detailed list of additions in version 2.3.12, and to the Dropbox forum to snag the new build for yourself in the source link below.

Dropbox is down, it’s not just you [UPDATE: It’s back]

Stop the presses, because it seems Dropbox is down. A lot of users have reported that files aren’t uploading to their Dropbox accounts like usual. It’s reported that users are still seeing the green checkmark attached to files, but they aren’t able to upload new files through the web interface nor the desktop apps.

A couple of us here at SlashGear haven’t been experiencing any problems, but taking a quick look at Dropbox’s status on Is It Down Right Now notes that the cloud storage service was indeed experiencing problems, with a red X next to today’s date with no ping activity going on. They say that within the past few hours, 97 users have reported problems with Dropbox.

Furthermore, server status shows that ping times have been increasing over the last week, suggesting that Dropbox service has been slowing down ever so much over the past few days until it finally gave way today. We’re not sure what the exact issue is, but Dropbox says they’re at least aware of the issue.

This is the first major outage for Dropbox in a while, and it’s guaranteed that many users were pretty upset by the downed cloud service, especially since a lot of businesses use Dropbox to collaborate on projects and such, including yours truly here at SlashGear. We’ll let you know once Dropbox is back up.

UPDATE: Looks like it’s back up and running, according to Dropbox, who says that the site “should” be back up. Let us know if you’re still having problems in the comments below.

PSA: Dropbox is down, uploads not working (update: it’s back)

PSA Dropbox is down for some

Dropbox is down — break out the FTP client. According to readers and Twitter, the service has been out of action for just over half an hour and while you might see the green tick of syncing joy on your PC, we were still unable to upload any new files through both the internet and desktop iteration — in fact the web interface is completely down. We’re not sure if this is a server issue or perhaps a delicious new feature with teething issues, but we’ve reached out to Dropbox and will update when we hear back.

Update: Looks like you can return to your regularly-scheduled uploading. Still no word on what caused the incident yet.
