Video: Sony PRS-600 Touch is fast but too dim to satisfy PRS-505 owner

Touch, it’s the panacea of e-book readers, right? Sure, just so long as readability isn’t sacrificed in the process. Flickr user Doodlydood uploaded some pics and video of Sony’s new $300 PRS-600 (on the left above) reader and did a quick comparison with his legacy PRS-505. Unfortunately, the glare from the plastic resistive touchscreen is an issue and the weak contrast, like the touchscreen PRS-700 before it, pales by comparison to Sony’s two year old PRS-505 with glass display. On the flip side, page turns on the new 600 were fast and “work extremely well” compared to the PRS-505. Unfortunately, that’s a minor victory when the whole purpose of an e-reader it to well, you know… read. See for yourselves in the videos after the break.

Amazon, Microsoft and Yahoo unite against Google Books

Microsoft, its new pet dog Yahoo, and Amazon have decided to join together in the soon to be formed Open Book Alliance. You might expect this to be a revolutionary new collaborative effort at delivering the written word in a way that makes Google Books pale into insignificance, but you would, of course, be wrong. Far from trying to compete with Google, The OBA is set to act as the collective mouthpiece for all those opposed to Google’s recent $125 million settlement deal with book publishers and authors. With the US Department of Justice already investigating antitrust concerns relating to the case, the other big dogs just couldn’t restrain themselves from pitching in together for a united whinge. Should the settlement be cleared, it will permit Google non-exclusive rights to orphan works (those without an established writer) and will give it a 30 per cent cut of books sold via Google Books, both things that authors have agreed to. So what’s there to moan about, fellas — we all trust Google to do the right thing, right?

CourseSmart releases eTextbook reader for iPhone

We have no idea who would choose an iPhone app over a real, honest-to-goodness textbook, but if you really want to spend marathon cram sessions hunched over a 3.5-inch display, a company called CourseSmart has just made its entire catalog available for viewing with its eTextbooks app. Certainly, it seems that the company’s selection is nothing to sneeze at — electronic access to over 7,000 titles from 12 publishers — so if you’re already using the service, additional on-the-go access to the books (as well as the handy search, notes, and bookmarks) might prove quite worthwhile. Keep in mind that you’re not actually downloading the books — so your mileage will vary, depending on the quality of your Internet connection. Maybe this device is actually marketed to students who need a helping hand (or, in this case, handheld) during finals? Regardless, this is further evidence that the electronic textbook market is one to keep an eye on — if only someone could figure out how to do it right. Sony Agrees to eBook Standard

Amazon is quickly becoming the Apple of the e-book world, and Sony seems to be quietly hatching plans from second place, in order to unseat the king. One option is freeing up e-book from the DRM they come saddled with. The company announced yesterday that it would be adopted ePub, a book publishing open-standard pushed by companies like Random House and HarperCollins.

“There is going to be a proliferation of different reading devices, with different features and capabilities and prices for a different set of consumer requirements,” Sony’s president of digital reading Steve Haber told The New York Times. “If people are going to this e-book shopping mall, they are going to want to shop at all the stores, and not just be required to shop at one store.”

Sony will adopt the standard by the end of the year. Amazon, for its part, is looking to take on the industry by itself, without any such standards. It’s good to be king.

iRex readying wireless e-reader while Plastic Logic’s own snags $299 price point

Who says the world stopped reading decades ago? With CES 2010 looming ever closer, it looks as if 2010 may end up being the year of the e-book reader. Amazon’s got a few Kindles out, Sony’s now vying to compete on price, Hearst is doing whatever it’s doing, Plastic Logic is jumping in early next year and even iRex is purportedly hoping to issue a consumer-centric alternative. Speaking of those last two, we’re hearing that Plastic Logic’s long-awaited entrant into the e-book reading world will “be launched in the US at the beginning of next year at a similar price to the Kindle, which starts at $299,” while a UK launch is expected in late 2010 or early 2011. As for iRex, the mockup you see above portrays a wireless device with an expansive 8.1-inch display, inbuitl 3G, a full touchscreen and a fall 2009 release date. ‘Course, we’re also hearing that this one will hover well above the $300 mark, so it’s certainly not aimed at the budget-minded bookworms. So many syllables, so little time…

Sony Reader Pocket and Touch editions lower cost of entry, online e-book store follows suit

As it turns out, those Sony Reader leaks from earlier this week were spot on. The company just went official with the PRS-300 and 600, which will more affectionately be known as the Pocket and Touch editions, respectively. The latter (pictured left, not to scale) is the 6-inch resistive touchscreen model replacing the PRS-700, with Memory Stick / Duo and SD card slots. The backlighting layer from its predecessor has been dropped to improve touch responsiveness and to alleviate concerns of glare. It also comes packing a stylus and a digitized copy of the Oxford American English Dictionary and will be available in red, black, and silver. The Pocket Edition, on the other hand, is your standard fare with no touchscreen or expandable disk port, and palettes including blue, silver, and rose. Both models have USB 2.0, 512MB internal memory, and no WiFi whatsoever — Sony assures us a WiFi version is coming and there’ll be news on those coming soon, but this isn’t it. There’s also Mac compatibility, a first for the series, that’s trickling down to older models via a firmware update. Touch and Pocket will be available by the end of August and will retail for $299 and $199, a substantially more competitive price point than its previous generation. Speaking of which, as of tomorrow, the Sony’s e-book store is dropping the prices of its bestsellers from $11.99 to $9.99. A win all around, but will it be enough to make a dent in Kindle‘s stronghold? Things are certainly getting more interesting.

Full specs leak on Sony Reader PRS-300 and PRS-600

Still doubting that Sony has a new duo of e-book readers on the horizon? Have a look at this. Sony Insider is reporting that retailer J&R posted up product listings for both the PRS-300 and PRS-600, but both were quickly pulled in order to avoid a stern wrist slap from the suits at Sony. ‘Course, neither were pulled quickly enough, and what we’re left with is a list of full specifications and MSRPs for the both of ’em. If said sheets are to be believed, the 5-inch (800 x 600 resolution) Sony PRS300-RC Reader Pocket Edition will ship with 512MB of onboard memory, PC and Mac support, a battery good for 7,500 page turns and USB 2.0 connectivity. The 6-inch (800 x 600 resolution) PRS600-SC Reader Touch Edition checks in at 0.4-inches thin and boasts a virtual keyboard, doodle capability, 512MB of storage, a built-in English e-dictionary, PC and Mac support and the same battery as on the smaller sibling. We’re looking at price tags of $199 and $299, respectively, but with no apparent WiFi or WWAN built in, it’ll still be a hard sell over Amazon’s connected Kindle here in America.

Student sues Amazon after Kindle eats his homework

It seems we have yet another reason to volley complaints in Amazon’s directions. 17-year old high school student Justin Gawronski had apparently been taking electronic notes and annotations on his Kindle for a summer assignment on George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. Yeah, you can probably guess where this is going — after the retailer remotely pulled the plug on that particular version of the book, Gawronski’s notes were lost in the ethers, rendered useless. The suit, which is seeking class action status, asks that Amazon be legally blocked from improperly accessing users’ Kindles in the future and punitive damages for those affected by the deletion — and if he asks nice, we’re pretty sure Jeff would write his teacher a note. Sony brings over a million Google Books to the Reader

Cool move by Sony to bolster the number of titles in its Reader ebook store — it’s linked up with Google to provide over a million free public domain works from Google Books, just like those fun folks at Barnes and Noble. The books are in the EPUB format and will work with the PRS-505 or the PRS-700 in the US only for now — different countries have different copyright terms, so we’d imagine the lawyers are busy sorting it all out. Sure, none of this will do much to shake the Kindle’s market- and mindshare, but at least Sony won’t be deleting this stuff off your device without your permission, right?

How an Apple Tablet Could Pit iTunes Against Amazon.com

With rumors piling up about a forthcoming Apple tablet, it appears more and more likely that such a device will emerge soon.

But what’s still unclear is how this gadget will set itself apart from Apple’s multimedia-savvy product line, including the iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as the scores of failed tablet PCs that have come and gone. Judging from the company’s past moves, we’re betting that Apple’s tablet will be a media-centric device, focused — at least in part — on shaking up the publishing industry.

Apple is already prepared to blow Amazon and other e-book makers out of the water with one key weapon: iTunes. Having served more than 6 billion songs to date, the iTunes Store has flipped the music industry on its head. It also turned mobile software into a lucrative industry, as proven by the booming success of the iPhone’s App Store, which recently surpassed 1.5 billion downloads. Apple has yet to enter the e-book market, and making books as easy to download as music and iPhone apps is the logical next step.

What can Apple do better with e-books? For textbooks or anthologies, Apple can give iTunes users the ability to download individual chapters, priced between a few cents to a few bucks each. It would be similar to how you can currently download individual song tracks from an album. It might even have the same earthshaking potential to transform an entire industry by refocusing it on the content people actually want instead of the bundles that publishers want them to buy. (Of course, Apple would likely offer the à-la-carte purchase model in addition to the option to purchase the entire book as one download — a more attractive option for shorter works such as novels.)

College students would love this: Teachers rarely assign an entire textbook, so they would save hundreds of dollars by downloading only a few chapters of each textbook. Apple is already popular in the education sector, so here’s even more money to milk from students, with the textbook industry worth an estimated $9.8 billion.

Sci-fi fans might only want one story from an anthology, or a historical researcher might target certain subjects. All Apple has to do to secure the book publishers’ enthusiastic cooperation is to offer them a generous cut of the revenues, like the 70 percent it currently offers app developers.

Other than having the upper hand with digital distribution, an Apple tablet can compensate for other e-book readers’ shortcomings. In a previous story, Wired.com polled students on their interest in Amazon’s large-format Kindle DX reader. Several of them said they couldn’t imagine ditching textbooks for a Kindle DX, foreseeing challenges with tasks such as notetaking, highlighting and switching between books while writing essays.

Assuming its computing powers and interface design are anything like the iPhone’s, a touchscreen tablet would make these student-oriented tasks as easy as a few swipes and taps — far more pleasant than clunking around with the Kindle’s cheap buttons and sluggish interface. Plus, we would imagine students would be able to type their papers on the tablet.

Then there’s the obvious: An Apple tablet would have color, making it better for displaying magazine pages, which could also be purchased through the iTunes Store. It wouldn’t be saddled with a slow e-ink screen, so it could display video and browse the web with aplomb.

Let’s not forget to mention the multitude of other tasks an Apple tablet will likely be able to perform if developers decide to code applications for it. Think along the lines of an interactive remote control to enhance the movie-viewing experience on your TV, or a music video player to accompany the tunes blasting from your stereo. Or, heck, even an album-cover display screen for you to gaze at while listening to music. There’s huge potential in a tablet if Apple can pull this off. The challenge lies in establishing the right partnerships. If Apple weaves e-books into the iTunes Store, will book publishers hop on board? Given Apple’s success in numbers, we think so.

As for a data provider, it would be even better if Apple could work with a carrier such as Verizon to subsidize the tablet, bringing it closer to $500 — a more attractive price point for students. Because the device presumably would not feature a phone, the monthly plans could be priced significantly lower than an iPhone — $30 to $40, perhaps, for an unlimited 3-G internet connection.

(An aside: We’re aware, as some of our colleagues have pointed out, that an à-la-carte e-book model is an idealistic prediction. A more conservative guess would be that e-books will be available, in full, in iTunes, which would nonetheless be advantageous against Amazon given the enormous amount of iTunes users. We are, however, hopeful that Apple would be the company to drive radical change with e-book pricing models, given its proven ability to twist partners’ arms.)
