New York Times R&D group is braced for the future of content delivery, being totally chill

In a collision of journalistic labs heretofore unseen, the folks at Harvard’s Nieman Journalism Lab hit up The New York Times‘ R&D lab for a look at what those ink-stained word-slingers think about the future of newspaper delivery. Nick Bilton, “Design Integration Editor” at the NY Times, and ever calm in the face of futurism, gave a guided tour of the devices they’re currently looking at, and while there aren’t a lot of surprises, it is nice to see they’re taking ebooks, netbooks and touchscreen PCs all very seriously. Of particular note is a (sadly damaged) e-ink prototype with a newspapery layout, complete with typography, designed for an “e-ink device that [doesn’t] exist yet.” Nick also makes mention of Mary Lou Jepsen’s upcoming Pixel Qi display, along with the marvelous world of RFID-based ads. PVI's color e-ink delayed until 2010, big-screen Sony Reader coming?Color e-ink displays are starting to become less of a curiosity and more of a reality, but if the rumor from DigiTimes proves true it’s going to be another year or so before we start seeing them en masse. PVI, makers of displays for the Kindle and Sony Reader, has apparently indicated that its attempts at creating a color display have been more or less unsatisfactory and it’s going to take until 2010 at least to get its hues sorted out. That’s the bad news. There is some good news, though, indicating that Sony’s working on its own 8.5 x 11-inch reader utilizing the same screen as the Kindle DX. Since the last rumors about that display was pretty-much on the mark, we wouldn’t be surprised if this one proved true as well — and we can’t wait to see what Sony charges for it.

JenJen, a forum jockey over at HowardForums, was lucky enough to coax a Verizon sales rep into selling her Samsung’s new Alias 2 a few days early. Fortunately she did as any of us would and posted a video of her fresh out of box experience to YouTube. E Ink Offers Broadsheet Kit for Developers

E Ink, the company whose displays power almost all the major e-book readers, has released a new line of its broadsheet prototype kits aimed at developers. The AM-300 kit offers a 9.7-inch display and comes on the heels of the launch of Amazon’s larger sized Kindle e-book reader Kindle DX Wednesday .

The latest kit allows companies to experiment around E Ink’s display and build their own prototype readers.”With the success of e-books, there is lot of interest in e-newspapers,” says Sri Peruvemba, vice president of marketing for E Ink. “We have had every major publisher talk to us about our displays and many large equipment manufacturers are getting into the space.”

E Ink’s experiments with similar kits has paid off in the past. Last year it launched the AM300 series kit targeted at product designers and hobbyists who want hands-on access to its e-books reader sized display technology.  The kits offered buyers a production sample of a glass-based display, a display controller and all the hardware and software necessary to produce a fully functional e-reader. Though most of the kits priced at $3000 each were bought by companies looking to create Kindle competitors, a few enthusiasts hacked it to run a browser and some Linux applications.

E Ink’s new Broadsheet AM 300 kit has a resolution of 150 pixels per inch and can display multiple shades of gray giving readers the clarity of newsprint, says the company.  The kit includes a display module, a Linux x86 operating environment, E Ink API software for Broadsheet, various sample images, open source software drivers and applications including support for MMC cards, Bluetooth and USB. The kits will start shipping by the end of the month.

Samsung Alias 2 and Motorola Rival a445 appear in the wild

Got enough electronic ink yet this week? Hope not, cause here’s the Samsung Alias 2 in the wild, complete with that segmented E Ink keypad. Apparently mode changes happen smoothly and quickly, so our usability fears now just boil down to feel — those buttons do not look fun to press. We’ll see when it launches on May 11.

New Large Display

Kindle DX’s display has 2.5 times the surface area of Kindle’s 6-inch display. The larger electronic paper display with 16 shades of gray has more area for graphic-rich content such as professional and personal documents, newspapers and magazines, and textbooks. Kindle reads like printed words on paper because the screen works using real ink and doesn’t use a backlight, eliminating the eyestrain and glare associated with other electronic displays.

The New York Times Company and Washington Post Company are launching pilots with Kindle DX this summer. The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and The Washington Post will offer the Kindle DX at a reduced price to readers who live in areas where home-delivery is not available and who sign up for a long-term subscription to the Kindle edition of the newspapers.

Kindle DX’s large display offers an enhanced reading experience with another category of graphic-rich content-textbooks. With complex images, tables, charts, graphs, and equations, textbooks look best on a large display. Leading textbook publishers Cengage Learning, Pearson, and Wiley, together representing more than 60 percent of the U.S. higher education textbook market, will begin offering textbooks through the Kindle Store beginning this summer. Textbooks under the following brands will be available: Addison-Wesley, Allyn & Bacon, Benjamin Cummings, Longman & Prentice Hall (Pearson); Wadsworth, Brooks/Cole, Course Technology, Delmar, Heinle, Schirmer, South-Western (Cengage); and Wiley Higher Education.

New Built-In PDF Reader

Kindle DX features a built-in PDF reader using Adobe Reader Mobile technology for reading professional and personal documents. Like other types of documents on Kindle, customers simply email their PDF format documents to their Kindle email address or move them over using a USB connection. With a larger display and built-in PDF reader, Kindle DX customers can read professional and personal documents with more complex layouts without scrolling, panning, or zooming, and without re-flowing, which destroys the original structure of the document. Everything from annual reports with graphs to flight manuals with maps to musical scores can be viewed on a single, crisp screen with Kindle DX.

New Auto-Rotation

NYT: Amazon Debuting Jumbo Kindle ‘As Early as This Week’

The Kindle 2 may only be a few months old, but the New York Times reports that Amazon is set to unveil a big-screen E ink reader, designed for newspapers, magazines and textbooks. Like, soon.

The idea of a larger, newspaper-oriented reader (including a Kindle) has been floated before, most publicly by Hearst, who proposed a 8.5×11-inch reader in February. This report revisits that plan, pegging Plastic Logic as the manufacturer of the device. But that stuff is decidedly future tense (“by the end of the year”), and digital access to Hearst titles is only exciting if you live in one of their papers’ markets.

Amazon’s device would have access to the same wide range of publications as the current Kindle, and likely a few more, but a larger screen could mean content would be presented in a different way. Hilariously, the Times reports that they are “expected to be involved in the introduction of the device”, but couldn’t extract a comment (revealing!) from anyone allegedly involved in the project, despite the fact that they work in the same cubicle farm. But this naturally Times-centric report kind of dilutes the significant of such a device: Amazon will likely carry titles from a vast number of news providers, and if the E ink experience becomes enough like newspaper—in term of news choice as well as literal usability—then this product could represent the newspaper and magazine industries’ first financially viable step away from dead trees.

As sanguine as newspaper folks might be about this, magazine publishers are, predictably, a little less optimistic. Conde Nast’s editorial director said, “I don’t think we would be anywhere near as excited about anything in black and white as we would about high-definition color”, hinting that even a mondo-Kindle wouldn’t be a game-changer for their richly visual magazine stable.

The NYT report doesn’t mention the most obvious possible fault with these plans: despite the fact that a larger screen would be better suited to displaying newspaper content, it might make the device kind of impractical. The current Kindle is small enough to chuck in a bag or briefcase, and carrying one around isn’t much more of a burden than toting a weekday newspaper or single magazine. Using a larger reader, on the other hand, would be more akin to carrying a clipboard than an iPhone; fine when you’re reading, but a pain in the ass when you’ve got to leave the subway. [NYT]

Samsung Alias 2 launching on May 11, E Ink confirmed?

We’re hearing that the Alias 2 is on track for a release in less than two weeks from now — May 11, to be exact — which would mean that we’re just a few short days away from seeing the very first E Ink handset launch in the States. Yes, that’s right, we said it — after all the heated debate over the technology powering the Alias 2’s configurable keypad, our tipster tells us that new information floating down from corporate confirms that the device is using E Ink, which would explain why it’s able to maintain state even with the power off. We still think it’s one awfully ugly phone, but this might be one of those all-too-frequent cases where cool tech ends up winning our hearts anyway. As for pricing, the tipster thinks it may come in at $79, which seems improbable even with deep contract discounting and a big mail-in rebate — but if by some miracle it does end up being accurate, they’re going to be selling tons of these to text-heavy geeks like ourselves.
