The Weekly Roundup for 06.03.2013
Posted in: Today's ChiliYou might say the week is never really done in consumer technology news. Your workweek, however, hopefully draws to a close at some point. This is the Weekly Roundup on Engadget, a quick peek back at the top headlines for the past seven days — all handpicked by the editors here at the site. Click on through the break, and enjoy.
While Apple’s WWDC starts Monday (and is undoubtedly garnering more attention), E3 also starts on Monday, and it’s expected to be a big one, as both Microsoft and Sony are expected to further discuss their new respective gaming consoles. However, signs and promo material for a game called “Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare” have popped
Crytek has a reputation for pushing the limits of hardware with CryEngine — witness the will-it-run-Crysis jokes — so it’s only logical that the company would leap on new consoles with enthusiasm. Sure enough, the company has followed up talk of Xbox One support in CryEngine 3 with word that its extra-pretty engine will also run on the PlayStation 4. Crytek isn’t saying which developers will use the code, although cross-platform games make sense when the PS4, Xbox One and PCs share the same basic x86 architecture. We may hear bit more about early partners next week.

iam8bit Entertainment System retro gaming console / art project to debut during E3
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe iam8bit collective has presented intersections of art and old-school gaming frequently over the last few years, and at an LA event during E3 this hand-built console will join the show. Designed “specifically with retro gaming in mind” and put together by artist Travis Chen, the iam8bit Entertainment System’s hardware specs will be revealed at its public launch Friday night. The systems will be made available for purchase both in person and online, although price is still TBA just like the heavyweights from Microsoft and Sony. Is the promise of a retro gaming PC featuring some classic wood paneling not enough to draw you in? The exhibition also features work from more than 80 artists plus a real-life replica of Uncle Scrooge McDuck’s money bin to celebrate Ducktales: Remastered. It’s scheduled to run until June 30th, take a look after the break for the location and time.
