EA plans to scrap Online Pass from existing games, enable access without a code

EA’s Online Pass program has been in the news a bit of late, but that’ll soon change. The voucher’s now set to be phased out completely — earlier this month the company shared that it won’t be including the certificates with new games, but now Game Informer reports that this will apply to existing titles as well. Soon, EA Sports games will no longer prompt users for a code, while numbers for other titles will be made available for free online. The rollout should wrap up over the next few weeks.

Mirror’s Edge 2 leaks again: Tipped for Xbox One E3 2013 reveal

Much-rumored EA game Mirror’s Edge 2 seems to have been prematurely given the official nod today, with a listing for the unannounced title spotted at EA’s help site. Swiftly pulled – though not before a screencap could be taken – the listing didn’t actually have any details of the game, but its existence alone is enough to seemingly confirm that it’s in the pipeline, potentially for the Xbox One among other consoles.

The EA help page blunder isn’t the only Mirror’s Edge 2 tidbit we’ve seen lately. Listings for the game showed up briefly on both Amazon Germany and Amazon Italy, Eurogamer reports; one page suggested it was for the Xbox 360, while the other used a mock-up of the Xbox One box-style.

EA is playing it coy, meanwhile. “We appreciate fan enthusiasm for Mirror’s Edge, especially fans throughout the retail channel” the company told IGN UK in reference to the Amazon pages. “This is not official EA material. We have nothing to announce at this time.”

Microsoft has already said that it will have fifteen titles to discuss for the new Xbox One at E3 next month, with at least one from EA (FIFA 2014). Mirror’s Edge 2 would seem like a good addition to that line-up, having been hotly anticipated over the past few years.

If the game is real and indeed fast-incoming – and all signs point to “yes!” – then EA will likely detail it properly at its EA 2013 press conference. That’s due to take place on June 10, leaving plenty of time for more inadvertent leaks and listings.

EA CTO: Xbox One and PS4 “are a generation ahead of” PCs

The new PlayStation 4 and Xbox One come with some pretty impressive hardware on the inside. So good, in fact, that Electronic Arts CTO Rajat Teneja believes that the performance and hardware in the Xbox One and PS4 “are a generation ahead of the highest end PC on the market,” so not just gaming PCs in general, but the best gaming PC ever.

After that, he didn’t mention PCs again, only saying that “benchmarks on just the video and audio performance are 8-10 times superior to the current gen,” saying that “the compute capabilities of these platforms and the data transfer speeds we can now bank on, essentially removes any notion of rationing of systems resources for our game engines.”

The Xbox One comes with an 8-core processor along with 8GB of RAM. We’re not told about specifics, but a good guess would that both the PS4 and the Xbox One are running AMD’s Jaguar chip. Compared to gaming PCs, most gamers have a quad-core processor in their gaming rigs, with a few 8-core chips floating around.

However, Microsoft nor Sony have revealed what graphics their respective consoles are running, but if they’ve seen the just-announced NVIDIA GTX 780 Titan graphics chip, I’m pretty sure they’d run away whimpering. Imagine two of those cards in SLI — the gaming prowess would be practically infinite.

However, it’s possible that Teneja doesn’t actually mean these new consoles are faster, but rather just have newer technology in them, meaning that the processor inside the Xbox One and PS4 are so new, that it isn’t available for PCs yet. Then again, from the way that Teneja worded his blog post, it seems to mean that PCs don’t stand a chance against the next-gen consoles, which is quite saddening to hear.

Need for Speed Rivals coming November 19, Xbox One and PS4 later this year

The next installment in the long-running Need for Speed series has been announced. Need for Speed Rivals will be hitting store shelves on November 19 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and the PC, while the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will be released at some point later this year, according to Electronic Arts.

EA’s newly-rebranded Ghost Games studio will be in charge of development, with help from Criterion Games, who was behind Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Need for Speed: World. Rivals will include the same experience that past Need for Speed titles have had, but EA says that the new game will go back to its roots, with the cops vs. racers modes, allowing gamers to play as cops too. You’ll be able to move up in the ranks, as well as unlock new cars and customization options.

Online multiplayer in the new game is getting a feature called AllDrive, which allows friends to drop in and out of your open world to race with or against you, as well as the ability to play as cops and chance down racers. Speedpoints will be rewarded to players for chasing down racers or eluding the police, which can be used for performance upgrades.

Rivals will also include Criterion’s social tracking system Autolog, which provides leaderboards and lets gamers challenge other friends. The system will be similar to what’s coming in GRID 2, which will be released later next week. All of these features will be available for both current- and next-generation consoles.

The Need for Speed series is approaching 20 years in the making, and while it has drastically changed over the years — going from a simple racing game to street-tuned all-out racing with multiple modes, it seems Need for Speed is finally going back to its roots of the early days of the series, which we’re pretty excited to see what EA has in store come November.

EA to detail Star Wars future at E3

Electronic Arts says that they will be revealing their plans for the future of Star Wars games during E3 2013 next month. The game publisher was recently granted exclusive rights for the Star Wars franchise after Disney bought LucasArts, the developer responsible for past Star Wars installments.

deceived-580x435

EA Labels president Frank Gibeau said in a company blog post that their E3 press conference will include “a first look at [their] plans for the Star Wars partnership with Disney.” EA previously revealed that DICE and Visceral Games will produce new Star Wars titles in the future, as they join BioWare, who is continuing to develop games for the franchise.

As for what to expect in upcoming Star Wars games, Gibeau previously mentioned that the new games will be “entirely original with all new stories and gameplay,” with some elements being borrowed from past films. That’s all the details that we know of so far, but we should hear a healthy amount at E3 during the company’s presser on June 10.

EA will also be showing off some other next-generation titles, such as Battlefield 4, a new Need for Speed, as well as FIFA 14, NBA Live 14, Madden NFL 25, and EA Sports UFC, which we heard about yesterday during the Xbox One unveiling event. Those sports games in particular will be running on EA’s new Ignite engine on the Xbox One. However, PC versions of these games will not be built on the new engine.

With EA’s recently-poor track record, as well as their “worst company in America” award for the second straight year, we’re wondering how these Star Wars games will turn out. Not every game based on the movie franchise has turned out great, but it’ll be interesting to see what the DRM situation will end up being. It’s possible that EA can turn things around by the time they release a new Star Wars title, but we’ll ultimately have to wait and see.

Xbox One EA game lineup starts with FIFA 14

As to no one’s surprise, Electronic Arts made an appearance at Microsoft’s Xbox One reveal event, and they showed off some of the new sports games that will be coming to the Xbox One. There will be a new FIFA, Madden, NBA Live, and UFC, all of which will release their next game on the

EA shows first Xbox One games FIFA, NBA Live, Madden and UFC

EA teased hours ago that FIFA 14 would be one of the first Xbox One games, but it just used Microsoft’s event to unveil a considerably wider slate. FIFA 14, NBA Live 14, Madden 25 and EA Sports UFC are all coming to the new console within the next 12 months. All of them are using a new engine, EA Sports Ignite, that has 10 times the animation detail, smarter artificial intelligence, 3D crowds, “living” sidelines and a daily dose of new content through Xbox Live. EA and Microsoft are getting cozier with the deal, too — FIFA 14 Ultimate Team will be an Xbox exclusive. We’ll have to wait for more detail about that game later this year, but it’s safe to say that Microsoft won’t be lacking for major sports titles during the Xbox One’s vital first year.

EA Says No Wii U Games: Is Nintendo Dying?

Historically, Nintendo has been one of the strongest companies in all of the gaming realm. Back in the 80s, the Nintendo game consoles were the most popular out there and even only a few years ago the company did exceedingly well in both the mobile and console markets. Things have begun to change significantly for Nintendo and its profits are plummeting as a result.

Nintendo took another hit this week after EA, one of the biggest game developers out there, announced that it had no new games for the Wii U in development at this time.

wii u sadface

Considering the struggles Nintendo was having getting customers to purchase the Wii U already, knowing that some the biggest game franchises on the market such as Madden and FIFA will no longer be available is a significant blow.

In fact, back in the late 90s when EA decided not to produce its incredibly popular sports games for the Sega Dreamcast, Sega never produced another console. Could EA’s decision to develop no more games for the Nintendo Wii U be the end of the console? Without high quality and popular games the console is certainly on life support.

Perhaps Nintendo should start to think like SEGA, and reinvent itself as a software company. Can you imagine playing Mario Bros. or Metroid or Zelda on your iPad (without hacking.)
