From Battlefield to Mass Effect: How one engine is shaping the future of EA Games

After crossing under the elevated railroad viaduct that bisects a lush Azerbaijani forest from an industrial landscape, a squad of American soldiers gazes out at the valley that lies below. A saw-toothed horizon of half-assembled buildings juts out in the distance. It’s almost peaceful. Hundreds of seagulls chatter lazily overhead, blissfully unaware that the ensuing firefight will leave the seemingly forgotten structures looking somehow even worse for wear. Whole facades crumble under the hellfire of a military attack chopper. A grenade launcher’s explosive payload immediately contradicts the seemingly harmless thud it makes upon exiting the weapon’s chamber. An enemy scrambles for a new safe haven; his earlier hiding place no longer exists. By scene’s end, all that’s left are roiling flames and caustic black smoke.

This scene from the Battlefield 4 trailer was how the world, perhaps unwittingly, met Frostbite Engine 3, the next-gen toolset powering all of Electronic Arts’ non-sports games for the foreseeable future.

Command & Conquer Development Will Be Moved To A New Studio

Command & Conquer Development Will Be Moved To A New StudioGood news Command & Conquer fans, it looks like the franchise might not have been completely cancelled after all. This is according to an update on EA’s page where it states that the game is being moved to a new studio. While this doesn’t confirm when development will resume or who the new studio might be, it’s still good news for those who were worried that the franchise might have been dropped for good, or that EA might put the game on ice for a while before resuming its development. According to EA, “For those of you who bought The C&C Ultimate Collection, your early access to the beta will be honored once production of this title resumes under a new studio. “

It was just last month where it was announced that Command & Conquer: Generals 2, first announced back in 2011, would be cancelled, and that the studio behind it, Victory Studios, would be shutting down. The money gamers spent on the alpha has since been refunded. Many expressed their surprise and disappointment that the game has been cancelled, although we have to wonder if the new studio will simply pick things up from where it was left of, or if they will be starting all over from scratch, which in that case would result in another couple of years waiting.

FIFA 14 Achieves Over 26 Million Mobile Downloads

FIFA 14 Achieves Over 26 Million Mobile DownloadsJust what is EA’s biggest mobile launch to date? That would happen to be Plants vs Zombies 2, which so happened to hit the Android platform not too long ago. Well, second place is the first loser, but this does not mean other titles would not mind being in such a position. Case in point, EA’s FIFA 14 is proud to have achieved the 26 million combined downloads mark ever since it was launched last month as a free-to-play title. In fact, FIFA 14 actually managed to stay at the number one position in the iOS Free Games segment across 148 different countries, all the while picking up a Top 10 place in the Top Grossing Games chart in 115 countries.

Apart from that, we are pleased to take note that Windows Phone 8 users need not feel left out from the action, as EA did announce that the title itself will eventually be headed for such a platform in due time. It goes without saying that when you introduce a free-to-play mobile version for the world’s most popular game, it would be a success, but I am quite sure that the 26 million mark is something that was not quite expected in the first place , which is a good thing.

Titanfall Completely Exclusive To Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC; Sequel May Not Be

Titanfall Completely Exclusive To Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC; Sequel May Not Be

One of the most highly anticipated games of the next-generation of consoles has to be Titanfall. The shooter will be exclusive to Microsoft platforms as it’s expected to be released March 2014 on Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC machines, which means future owners of the PlayStation 4 will unfortunately be missing out on the game. Although you shouldn’t completely count a Titalfall game making its way to other platforms out of the realm of possibility. (more…)

Command & Conquer: Generals 2 Cancelled

Command & Conquer: Generals 2 CancelledBack in 2012, EA announced Command & Conquer: Generals 2, the sequel to the highly acclaimed Command & Conquer: Generals. It was revealed that the game would be taking the free-to-play route and has been in an alpha state for about a year now. Unfortunately if Generals 2 is a new real-time strategy (RTS) game that you’re looking forward to, you’d be out of luck as EA has since cancelled the game.  (more…)

Ken Block Signs on As Racing Advisor for EA’s Need for Speed

EA has announced that it has signed a deal with Ken Block in which he will become the Racing Advisor for the Need for Speed franchise. Block is an amazing race car driver who has participated in rally racing and won multiple X-Games medals. EA will also be sponsoring Block and his Ford Fiesta ST 2013 racing car.

The best news from this announcement isn’t that Block will be associated with Need for Speed, at least not for me. The best news is that EA will be working with Block on the release of Gymkhana Six. If you never seen a Gymkhana video and you’re a fan of cars or racing, you’re really missing out. So why not watch the last one now?..

EA says that the next installment in the Gymkhana franchise will be released in its entirety on November 11. EA promises that the new video raises the bar for what can be done behind the wheel of a car. That bar was already pretty high after Gymkhana 5, in my opinion. The next video the franchise will be available directly from the Need for Speed website and on the franchise’s YouTube channel.
