Accord 3D Printed Earphones: Beats by You

We’ve already seen a couple of 3D printed headphones, but they were mostly proofs of concept, not for daily use. Designer Julian Goulding hopes to incorporate the revolutionary technology into consumer-grade earphones with his Accord concept.

In theory, the Accord headphones present a variety of advantages. The first one is personalization. You can either go to a professional audiologist make molds of your ears or get a DIY molding kit from Goulding. Either way, you’ll send your molds to Goulding’s company to be scanned and turned into 3D files. This ensures that your earphones will fit snugly in your ears. They’ll also keep your files so you can order replacement parts in the future.

Another benefit of Accord’s 3D printing process is that they’re more sustainable: the earphones are printed on demand and not mass-produced. But as some you may know, custom and made-to-order earphones are nothing new. Companies like Ultimate Ears have been offering the service for years now. The problem with these existing personalized earphones is that they’re very expensive.

The picture above shows a mockup of the Android app for Accord. You can download a test version of the app here. The app lets you order your custom earphones and will let you choose its material and color, as well as track your order when it’s shipped. I wouldn’t be surprised if the price shown above is just a placeholder, but I’d even be more surprised if Accord earphones end up costing as much as its high-end counterparts. Besides, the fact that you can choose the material means you have some control over how expensive your order will be.

Goulding also mentioned on his website that the Accord can be localized by 3D printing firms to further drive down its printing costs. I wonder if that means you can specify a 3D printing shop near your location, or perhaps even let you print the Accord if you have your own 3D printer.

They actually look decent; now all we need to know is how they sound. Head to Goulding’s website to see a few more images of the Accord.

Polk Nue Era headphones announced

When it comes to headphones, there are just so many brands hanging around for you to choose from, so much so that it can be rather difficult in making a choice if you are not a well informed consumer. After all, there are two ways to approach a pair of headphones – the first would be by price, while the second is by design. We are glad to say that Polk with their recently announced Nue Era headphones does a pretty good job at maintaining a balance between the two, where it is said to redefine one’s musical style, appealing to fashionistas and audiophiles alike.

The Polk Nue Era headphones come in a jewel-like design complete with understated details, where each pair of in-ear headphones will be able to deliver rich and immersive sound that Polk has finely tuned over the past four decades, although they have decided to throw in a modern twist this time around which will cater to music lovers, especially audiophiles who also value their personal style on an equal basis.

Michael DiTullo, Chief Design Officer, said, “Headphones are an extension of our personality and a reflection of our fashion, however there haven’t been options that capture the timeless, easy-to-wear, vintage American style. In designing the Nue Era, we wanted to create an accessory that felt more like a classic pair of sunglasses, as easy as your favorite pair of jeans, and as well-crafted as a vintage timepiece. This inspiration has resulted in a headphone that is meant to be shown off, even when you want to keep your music all to yourself.”

Detailed and meticulous folks would definitely be able to identify with the amount of attention given to the detailing of the Nue Era headphones, ranging from its small sculpted housing to its sleek tortoise and champagne gold finish, or even the basic black and silver shades. Boasting supple ear tips that come in a range of sizes and shapes, they have been co-molded to the headphone ear tube to deliver the ultimate comfort, in addition to an intuitive three-button cable that makes sure it is a snap to toggle between music and phone calls. The cable itself is gold plated, sporting a precision machined 90-degree connector for a deeper source connection. The asking price? $99 per pair which should be music to your ears.

Every Single Pair of Freaking Headphones Ends Up Like This

Every Single Pair of Freaking Headphones Ends Up Like This

The timelapse of an untouched pair of headphones pretty much goes exactly like this comic. You set them aside totally mindful of the cables, carefully keeping them from each other. You ignore them until you need them again. And then when you pick them up, they’re a tangled mess. Every. Single. Time.

Sennheiser unveils “fashionable” MOMENTUM on-ear headphones

Sennheiser has announced some new additions to its MOMENTUM line of on-ear headphones, this time with pastel colors rather than the black headphones it currently offers. The redesign is aimed at those seeking fashionable accessories, and has been launched in conjunction to images taken by photographer Alexander Gnädinger and three fashion bloggers.

MOMENTUM_3

The new headphones are being offered in lighter pastel shades than other headphones in the line, among them being blue, green, pink, and an ivory-like color. The colors are designed to be “subtler” than some of the more bold fashion-oriented audio accessories offered by other headphone makers. This is to fit better with current fashion trends, says the company.

As part of the advertisement campaign for the company, the headphones are being showcased in photographs taken under the direction of fashion bloggers Luke Todd, Haleigh Walsworth, and Anna Frost. Said the photographer, Alexander Gnadinger, “It was very interesting to work with the three different bloggers, to look at them, learn from them, work with their style and then jointly create a personal portrait, related to fashion, music and the new Sennheiser headphones.”

The earpads and headband for these new MOMENTUM offerings are made from what Sennheiser calls a luxury material – Alcantara – also used by some automotive upholsterers, for reasons being attributed to durability, softness, and allowing for air flow. The earpads are designed to help isolate the audio being listened to from ambient sounds from the environment. Meanwhile, the sliders are made from stainless steel.

Sennheiser states that the design-centric focus of this new line of headphones does not impact the audio quality offered by it, however, assuring customers that audio is the same quality as offered by its other products. Says the maker, the audio produced by the MOMENTUM pastel offerings is “rich, detailed, and with a slight bass emphasis.”

Westone debuts Adventure Series Alpha earphones: water-resistant, audiophile grade, $200

Westone debuts Adventure Series Alpha earphones waterresistant, audiophile grade, $200

Some would say that a good set of earphones are a dime a dozen nowadays, but that’s not stopping outfits like Westone from trying to give you more (and, perhaps, even better) options to choose from. Enter the Adventure Series Alpha. These newly introduced in-ear headphones are, as the company puts it, tailored to bring “exceptional audio performance, fit, and design for the active user.” How so, you ask? Well, the ADV earphones boast an array of notable features, such as IPX-3 attributes for water resistance and in-line controls for iOS devices. Most importantly, however, is the 6.5mm micro driver found inside the Adventure Series Alpha, which Westone’s suited with an audio tech dubbed Precision Fine Tuning that “delivers sonic accuracy with extended bass.” If all that sounds good, then you best be ready to pony up $200, as that’s the price to pay before you can call ’em your own.

KEF M500 and M200 headphones launched in Hong Kong, we go ears-on

Image

It’s been almost a month since KEF announced its first headphone series, and yesterday we finally got the chance to try out its M500 cans and M200 in-ears at the company’s Hong Kong launch event. In fact, it’s worth noting that while KEF originated from the UK 52 years ago, it’s been part of Hong Kong’s Gold Peak Group since 1992. That said, much of KEF’s R&D is still done back in an English county called Kent, where the engineers attempted to port their company’s sonic signature over to its M series headphones. The result? Let’s just say we prefer one to the other.

Jays to launch a-JAYS Five earbuds with dedicated iOS, Windows and Android versions

aJays

Does your Android sound different from your iOS or WP? Perhaps a little, but each has their own quirks when it comes to audio output and hands-free kits. To that end, Jays will launch the a-JAYS Five earphones this summer with a separate version for each. The new buds will draw from the company’s experience with the a-JAYS Four, bringing its Swedish design flair along with revised ergonomics, refined sound, an updated version of its flat, tangle free cables, a new cable clip and a premium MEMS microphone. It’ll carry a three-button control setup similar to the last model, but will be optimized work differently depending on whether you have the iOS, Windows Phone or Android version — a concept the company calls “iWA.” We’re not sure if that’ll simmer down any flame wars, but you’ll be able to grab one for €90 (or $100) in black or white sometime this summer.

Creative launches NFC wireless speakers, colorful Hitz headsets

DNP Creative launches NFC wireless speakers, colorful Hitz headsets

Creative may hope to rival Jawbone’s Jambox with its new colorfully geometric Bluetooth speakers, the Airwave and Airwave HD. NFC-enabled Bluetooth speakers aren’t exactly news, so Creative is playing catch-up with its NFC-capable Airwave series. Users can pair capable Android devices to the Airwave by simply tapping the phone against the speaker and an integrated microphone allows for use as a speakerphone — iOS devices and Android devices not packing NFC can pair over Bluetooth. The Airwave HD can support two NFC-connected devices but it sacrifices about five hours of playback compared to the less powerful Airwave, which can go 12 hours between charges.

Creative is taking a fresh approach with its styling by offering the Airwave line in a variety of colors including pink, blue, green, and red. This new design theme is echoed in Creative’s Hitz headsets, which will feature an in-line microphone housing playback and volume controls. Though there’s no word yet on a stateside release, the Airwave and Airwave HD will be available in Singapore in June for SG$129 (US$103) and SG$199 (US$160) respectively and the Hitz line will launch in July, with prices ranging from SG$49 (US$39) to SG$89 (US$72). For more information, see the full press release after the break.

In fact, Sennheiser has just announced that they will be rolling out a new range of ‘Universal’ headsets, and the good news is this – all of them will play nice with the latest smartphone devices of today, which happen to hail from a slew of companies such as BlackBerry, Apple, Samsung and HTC. These new headsets will be based on some of Sennheiser’s most successful models, where among them would include the HD 219s on-the-ear headset, the HD 429 around-the-ear headset and the MM 70s ear canal headset.

As mentioned above, these new Universal headsets from Sennheiser will be compatible with just about all smartphone brands and models, and these will include recent hits such as the BlackBerry Z10, Apple iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One. Individual models will offer consumers integrated capabilities in order to manage phone calls, play and pause music, change tracks and adjust the volume, which makes them the ideal tool for listening and communicating while you are on the go.

The HD 219s would come in the form of on-the-ear universal headset for $79.95 a pop, where it delivers vibrant sound and punchy bass. Then there is the around-the-ear HD 429s universal headset that is going for $99.95, virtually allowing you to enjoy Sennheiser sound quality regardless of where you are without having to miss a call at all. The HD 429s offers outstanding audio performance with a smooth bass response. Last but not least would be the $99.95 MM 70s that was created based on one of Sennheiser most popular ear-canal models. You get a pair of neodymium magnets which will assist in delivering lifelike sound, in addition to a noise isolating design. Any takers?
