eBay CEO Believes Amazon’s Delivery Drones Are A ‘Long-Term Fantasy’

eBay CEO Believes Amazons Delivery Drones Are A Long Term Fantasy

Amazon recently announced a rather ambitious project that its R&D division has been working on. Called Amazon Prime Air, the company plans to employ drones to deliver packages of up to five pounds in 30 minutes. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said that the company hopes to make this project a reality by 2015, despite the fact that there are several challenges and hurdles in the way that Amazon Prime Air will have to clear first before it takes off. Speaking with Bloomberg TV, eBay CEO John Donahue said that his company isn’t focused on “long-term fantasies” such as Amazon’s drone project, instead he said that eBay is focusing on things “that will change consumers’ experience today.”

In select markets, eBay already offers a service called eBay Now. These markets include New York City, Dallas, Chicago and the San Francisco Peninsula region, eBay Now will also be launched in London soon. Users can opt for this service if they want items delivered within an hour after they have placed the order. The company’s personal shoppers handle the pickup from retail partners and delivery, all within 60 minutes. Despite the fact that its roll out has been rather slow, eBay Now is only expected to cover 25 markets by the end of next year, the fact remains that its already being offered to consumers. Amazon Prime Air, no matter how ambitious, still exists only on paper. However, Donahue agress that “bold innovation is important,” and that’s what Amazon’s delivery drones are at this moment, bold innovation. The CEO says that eBay’s bold innovation is focused around commerce.

UK Teen Pays £450 For Xbox One Day One Edition On eBay, Receives Photo Instead

UK Teen Pays £450 For Xbox One Day One Edition On eBay, Receives Photo Instead

It goes without saying that one must be cautious when buying things online, particularly from websites such as Craigslist and eBay. It is very easy to get scammed, or worse, even killed. 19 year old Peter Clatworthy, based in Nottingham, UK, searched eBay for the Xbox One Day One edition that he wanted to purchase as a gift for his four year old son. Clatworthy had been saving up his pounds to purchase Microsoft’s latest gaming console, however he didn’t end up with the console he wanted so badly. After paying £450 or roughly $730 and expecting to receive the console, he ended up with a photo of the Xbox One.

The eBay listing clearly stated that the product was a photo of an Xbox One, however Clatworthy decided to go ahead with the purchase as the listing was in the video games and consoles category. He thought that since the listing was in this particular category, it just might be a legitimate Xbox One Day One edition console. Furthermore, he looked at the seller’s feedback and didn’t find any negative reviews, which gave him all the more reasons to continue with the purchase. He did, but when the package arrive, it was a lot smaller and flatter than he would have imagined. Inside, there was a badly printed picture of an Xbox One with the words “Thank you for your purchase” on the back. A spokesman for eBay tells the Nottingham post that they will take action against the seller as they “don’t allow listings which mislead.” Clatworthy is covered by eBay’s money back guarantee and since he paid via PayPal, he can expect a full refund. The seller has until Monday to refund the full payment.

Xbox One Boxes Now Being Sold On eBay For Hundreds Of Dollars

Xbox One Boxes Now Being Sold On eBay For Hundreds Of DollarsPlanning on picking up an Xbox One but can’t find it at your local retailer? Your next best bet would probably be on eBay where you might some available albeit at marked up prices. However you should be aware as there seems to be several eBay listings in which the sellers are selling only the Xbox One’s box. Yes you read that right, they are only selling the cardboard box that the console came in, but they have named their auction and displayed it in such a way that the less discerning eBay-er might not think about it and place their bids. Another Limited Edition White Xbox One Console Spotted On eBay

Another Limited Edition White Xbox One Console Spotted On eBayWe had caught wind of a limited edition white Xbox One console that would be an exclusive to developers who worked on the Xbox One at Microsoft. Unsurprisingly some units have made their way onto eBay, with one going for as high as $11,300! Well the good news is that if you have the cash to splash and wouldn’t mind getting the limited edition Xbox One, you’re in luck because it looks like another white Xbox One has made its way onto eBay. At this time of writing, the console is going for $2,125 and with about 6 days to go, we wouldn’t be surprised if it managed to come close to $11,300, if not higher.

We’re not sure if the seller is an Xbox employee or if he/she is simply selling on the behalf of one, but either way the console appears to be brand new and will come with the usual, such as the Kinect sensor, a black and white controller, four Xbox One video games, and since this is also considered to be a “Day One” Xbox unit, it will also come with the achievement, which according to our earlier post, is actually something people are paying money to buy. So, any takers?

Xbox One Day One Achievements Can Now Be Bought On eBay

Xbox One Day One Achievements Can Now Be Bought On eBayAchievements are a great way to show your friends your “skills” when it comes to gaming, especially since some achievements are not easy to come by. As you guys might have heard, gamers who purchased Day One editions of the Xbox One will also be getting an achievement, which is pretty limited since these are exclusive to Day One units. What this means is that if you were not quick on the trigger when it came to buying an Xbox One, chances are you will not get that achievement. But exactly how much is an achievement worth? Well apparently anywhere between $30-$50, at least according to listings on eBay.

Yup, it looks like there are gamers out there who aren’t too fussed about achievements and are willing to sell other gamers the code which will give them the achievements, even if their console units aren’t Day One units. Interestingly enough these are also the prices that gamers were willing to pay for the weed emoticon on Steam awhile back, but what do you guys think? Does it really count as an achievement if you bought it? Or better still, would you be willing to buy an achievement just for  bragging rights?

    Microsoft Store Now On eBay

Microsoft Store Now On eBayNow here is a rather interesting proposition – Microsoft, a corporate giant in its own right, already has their very own retail website, not to mention have over 75 Microsoft Store brick-and-mortar locations which dot the landscape in the U.S. as well as Canada. The thing is, the company still has plans to expand their retail presence, and their latest effort in doing so would be through the announcement of their very own store on eBay.

According to the Microsoft blog,” By working with eBay, a top global shopping destination with more than 124 million active users globally, even more customers can now purchase their favorite Microsoft first-party products including Surface and Xbox, as well as accessories. Our customers can expect the same safe online shopping experience, return policy and free shipping from the Microsoft Store on eBay that they’ve come to expect on microsoftstore.com.”

Right now, the eBay page for Microsoft does seem to arrive with a limited supply of products in comparison to the main Microsoft Store site. It is still selling the previous generation Surface and Surface Pro tablets at a discount, instead of having the most recent Surface products on sale. While everyone is looking forward to the Xbox One this weekend, the eBay page is still pushing the aged Xbox 360 console. We wish Microsoft the very best in this endeavor! [Press Release]

Personal Data Sold on eBay for $64 Dollars

This article was written on August 27, 2008 by CyberNet.

How would you feel if your personal data was sold, (along with thousands of others) on eBay, for around 64 dollars? When we say personal data, we are talking about names, addresses, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, phone numbers, mothers’ maiden names, scans of signatures, and more. It’s very personal information that could easily be used to steal an identity and doesn’t belong in the hands of just anybody.

Recently, a man by the name of Andrew Chapman purchased a used computer on eBay for around 64 U.S. dollars. To his surprise, it came with more than he expected. Along with the computer came a hard drive loaded with the personal data of thousands and thousands of people. The data he received belonged to those with American Express, Natawest, and Royal Bank of Scotland accounts.

    data theft.png

Luckily Chapman was an honest guy and reported his find, but what about the person who sold the computer? Apparently the computer was sold by a former employee of an archiving firm called Graphic Data. Graphic Data was questioned on the situation and said, “Certain pieces of IT equipment has been moved from a secure area. We are seeking to recover this equipment, which apparently contained customer data. We take customer privacy and data security very seriously.” Talk about a security breach!

This just goes to show that you never really know what you’re going to end-up with when you buy something on eBay.

Amazon Working on a PayPal Competitor?

This article was written on June 20, 2008 by CyberNet.

amazon payments.pngRumor has it that Amazon is planning to launch some type of e-commerce business to allow payments and money transfers which will compete with PayPal. Some of you probably know that Amazon already has their Amazon Payments service that allows you to send and receive money, and shop with your mobile phone, but it’s limited to Amazon and “their partners.”

From the sounds of it, Amazon’s solution would be more widely used around the web than the current Amazon Payments, or at least that would be the goal. Analyst Derek Brown talked about it recently and said that Amazon “may soon launch a PayPal-esque payments service for use by consumers and merchants across the web, potentially siphoning growth and/or profit from eBay’s crown jewel.”

We’re not sure exactly what Amazon will do to expand Amazon Payments and compete with PayPal but it might be welcomed. Some people are frustrated with both eBay and PayPal for various reasons and are looking for an alternative way to make payments online. With a name like Amazon backing a service, they could potentially gather-up some loyal users.

Analysts say the service could launch late Summer or early Fall, so we’ll be keeping our eye for more details in the coming weeks…
