Harmonix auctions off custom Beatles Xbox for charity, free publicity

We’re sure you’ve already heard about the kerfuffle surrounding the use of Kurt Cobain’s likeness in a Guitar Hero avatar. Maybe it’s a generational thing (or maybe it speaks to the difference between the temperaments of Ms. Ono and Ms. Love) but while the former members of Nirvana are not amused by their treatment at the hands of videogame consoles ’round the world, it’s nearly unanimous in the Beatles camp: Beatles Rock Band is awesome. If you’re looking to indulge your Fab Four fixation — and if money’s no object — you might want to head on over to eBay and peep the first of fifty Xbox 360s being auctioned off for by Harmonix. Bidding started off at $780, but as of Sunday afternoon it’s over $17,000 — with over four days left to go! Designed by Passion Pictures (the kids responsible for animating Gorillaz), proceeds go to Doctors without Borders. Please insert your own Courtney Love joke here.

eBay Tests New Search Page, Try it Yourself!

This article was written on November 22, 2007 by CyberNet.

eBay Redesign

I was just doing some searching on eBay.com and noticed that I must have been randomly selected to use a drastically redesigned search page. The new design might be a little bit old, but it’s the first time I’ve tested it. As you can see above they have broken the search results up into two different columns, the one on the left providing the auctions and the one on the right listing the Buy It Now items.

I love the new design, but if you have a small screen the two-column design might be a little cramped. It is a lot easier, however, for people to see what items they can buy immediately, and which ones are on auction. Below the price on each item it lists the shipping cost, which is nice for determining whether a deal is as good as it may seem.

Now here’s the thing, most of you probably won’t see the redesign. I’m guessing that they are just testing this out much like how Google tests out new search pages. I hope they push this one through though, because I think it will definitely benefit both buyers and sellers.

BUT, I know how these redesigns work. They store cookies in your browser, and before I lost the cookies eBay had set I made sure to grab the data. Therefore you can test out the new design, too! Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Copy this URL by right-clicking on it, and choosing the copy option.
  2. Pull up the eBay.com site and paste what you copied in Step 1 into the address bar. Press Enter and you should see a popup confirming that the cookies have been set.
  3. Do a search, and you should see the new design pictured above.

Hope everyone enjoys the new design! Let us know what you think in the comments below.

BlackBerry Onyx, desperate for attention, sells self on eBay

BlackBerry Onyx, desparate for attention, sells self on eBay

Still waiting for BlackBerry’s Onyx to hit the retail thoroughfares? You’re not alone. Despite this thing being spotted on the town months ago it’s still not available through proper channels — but then there’s always eBay, where a “pre-release” Onyx is now available for you bidding pleasure. The AT&T-bound smartphone sports a 3.2 megapixel camera, 480 x 360 display, GPS and WiFi, and a slinkier form factor. Bidding has just crossed the $600 mark on this “new, never opened” phone, but as it has in fact been opened (clearly shown in the auction’s terrible pictures) you might want to set that sniping ceiling just a little lower than your heart may call for.

[Thanks, Kenny]

AMD Phenom II TWKR Black Edition CPU up for auction, sure to fetch a bundle

Remember that AMD Phenom II X4 TWKR processor that we saw overclocked and reviewed just over a fortnight ago? Don’t you recall reading and wondering why you were even wasting your time given the scarcity of said chip? It took awhile, but it seems the justification you’ve been searching for has finally arrived. AMD only manufactured a smattering of these chips in order for select media outlets to showcase the company’s potential, and somehow one has found its way onto eBay. Best of all, 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit a charity (Family Eldercare), so you can feel good about spending way, way too much on a slab of silicon. Tap the read link if you care to drive the price up even further (and you know you do).

[Thanks, Alex]

Unreleased OQO model 2+ sells for $4,500 on eBay, must be love

We may be gadget nerds but we’re not immune to the heart-tugs of romance. In fact, we’ve been known to dress a new smartphone or two in a tight-fitting sleeve of silicone and set it conspicuously on the bar for lesser men to admire, wishing it was theirs. And nothing rouses a man to a fit of sentimental flourish faster than the premature demise of his favorite company. So are we surprised to learn that r***r paid $4,500 to “win” a slightly soiled, but never released OQO Model 2+? Not in the least… you’d be surprised to learn what a man would pay for a Foleo.

[Thanks, Lambdajones]

iPhone 3GS prototype scooped up at airport, now on eBay

Seriously folks, what’s up with these prototype iPhones falling out of nondescript white vans and ending up on eBay in the shadiest of manners? Just months after we saw an original iPhone prototype (ancient OS included) pop up on The ‘Bay, now we’ve got one of the world’s first iPhone 3GSs on there as well. According to the highly ranked eBay seller, the “guy” he “got it from” actually stumbled upon it at an airport, and rather than doing the nonsensical thing of hitting up lost and found, he decided to make the most of the sudden opportunity. According to the new owner, an Apple Genius has confirmed that it is an iPhone 3GS, but due to its prototype nature, they can’t help him get past the “Connect to iTunes” screen. In other words, it’s an incredibly rare brick. If that sounds like just the thing to complete your collection, you can visit the road to overpaying through the read link below.

Palm Pre hits eBay prior to official launch: just $900 and a fistful of shame

Look, if this were one of those elusive GSM Pres, we might be able to understand this. But seriously — $899.99 for a Palm Pre that you won’t get until launch day anyway? ‘Course, there are those certain folks that are born everyday, but we couldn’t caution you enough to steer clear here. After all, lines won’t even be a problem come tomorrow, right guys? On another note, how did some chap from Encino end up with five of these gems? White panel van delivery or something?

eBay to Acquire StumbleUpon/Google Launches Queryless Search

This article was written on April 18, 2007 by CyberNet.

Stumbleupon_ebayAccording to TechCrunch, eBay is all set to acquire StumbleUpon, a popular web discovery site which helps users find new sites, and more recently videos. It’s often described as “channel surfing” on the web.Rumor has it that the price is anywhere from $40–45 million or higher, and Google and AOL were also said to be in on the talks.

The same thoughts are going through my head right now with this deal as when eBay acquired Skype– they don’t exactly seem like the perfect match. It will definitely be interesting to see what eBay has in-store for StumbleUpon and how this will benefit them. While none of this has been confirmed, TechCruch says that people close do the deal are talking, and it’s imminent.

Also interesting is that Google just announced their queryless search. Yes, that’s right, it sounds like they’re taking on StumbleUpon. Convenient timing, isn’t it? It’s integrated into the Google Toolbar and it will appear as a pair of dice.  When you click on the logo, you will get a site recommendation based upon your Google Search History.Google will give you up to 50 recommendations per day.

Googlerandomsite

Another queryless search option they’re giving you is to get recommendations right from your Google Personalized Homepage.  You can “Add a Tab,” then type “recommendations” as the tab name, and then you’ll get a page of recommendations that are updated everyday. If you don’t have Search History enabled, neither of these services will work for you.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CCXIII: Magic trick goes awry on eBay

Sigh. Where to begin? It looks like a Magic, it smells like a Magic, but the perfectionist in us fully understands that it’s absolutely not a Magic. The self-proclaimed followup to HTC’s G1 has itself an impostor, and that very shammer is parading around on eBay for the low, low price of $122.99. Granted, that doesn’t buy you an HTC logo, Android or 3G, but hey, it just might fool a few folks on the subway. Take it from us, though, it’s totally not worth the risk of embarrassment.

[Thanks, Jeremy]

How much is Free Software Worth on eBay?

This article was written on April 30, 2007 by CyberNet.

It never ceases to amaze me what people will do for money. Really, it’s appalling sometimes. I’ve seen some interesting eBay auctions before like people selling the free toiletries from hotels, but this is the first time I’ve seen people selling software that’s free from the developers on eBay. I’m sure it’s been going on for about just as long eBay has been around, but this was the first time I went and searched for it. It never crossed my mind that people would be selling FREE software, but I should have known better.

The first example: “Why pay a fortune for Adobe Photoshop when you can edit and draw pictures professionally with this professional paint program. This auction is for an instant download that you will receive by email once you have paid.”

The description above, sadly is for Paint.NET which can be yours on eBay for $4.90. Or you could just download it from the developer for free! They list it as ‘Full Professional Graphics Program– Photoshop Compatible.’ For one, Paint.NET isn’t Photoshop compatible, but what’s even more appalling is that people actually purchase this. The person selling Paint.NET along with several other FREE applications has a stellar 100% feedback!

Paint

Not only is selling the free software an easy way to make money (and highly unethical), it also looks like it’s an easy way to gather up feedback. What’s equally as bad is that this same user is selling Open Office and Nvu (comparable to FrontPage or Dreamweaver) for $4.90, as well. After the buyer has paid, the seller just directs them to the free download link that anyone has access to.

Openoffice Nvu

Download Paint.NET
Download OpenOffice
Download Nvu

Next example:Ubuntu Linux – the normally free operating system is being sold on eBay for $1.99 plus $5.98 shipping charges. This gives the buyer a profit of $7.97 because all they have to do is go to shipit.ubuntu.com, enter in the buyers address, and Ubuntu sends out the disks for free. The seller doesn’t even have to ship a thing!

Ubuntu5

And just as the Paint.NET scenario above, people actually buy the software and leave positive feedback for this buyer, thanking him for the fast shipping. This particular seller is not the only one selling Linux, in fact, others are selling it for even more.

I know for sure that one of the developers for Paint.NET is aware of this, however he says that to his knowledge what they’re doing is not illegal because of the MIT License that Paint.NET is released under.

He found out about this from people who actually purchased the program on eBay and later fount out that they paid for a free program.  The seller in this situation does not specifically say what program it is, rather they just describe it.

I’m all about people researching before they buy, but considering these sellers have great feedback and they generally don’t specify the program that the buyer will be receiving other than to describe it, it’s hard to blame the buyer for not looking into it. It’s obviously an unethical way to do business, but it’s happening. Be sure to spread the word so that people won’t get scammed like this!
