The Olympus Stylus 1 delivers DSLR performance in a compact form factor

olympus-stylus-1Olympus has once again redefined the enthusiast compact camera market segment by bringing together a slew of features that are found across its camera range in the new Stylus 1. Specially designed to target semi-pro shooters who want optical brilliance, it comes along with DSLR operation, convenience and portability, being a one-size-fits-all package. Apart from that, the Olympus Stylus 1 will also come with an i.ZUIKO lens which incorporates the outstanding optical quality of the Olympus ZUIKO interchangeable lenses. Right at its heart lies a large 1/1.7-inch BSI CMOS sensor and TruePic VI image processor, where it will be accompanied by extra features such as a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) that can also be found on the award-winning Olympus OM-D E-M5 and Wi-Fi connectivity so that you are able to capture and sharing anywhere.

Sporting a newly developed, ultra-slim 10.7x (28–300mm) high-power i.ZUIKO lens, it will deliver constant f2.8 brightness across the zoom range, making it versatile enough to capture wide to telephoto shots while delivering pro-quality stills with beautiful, defocused backgrounds and crisp images, never mind that you are shooting even in low light conditions. The large diameter lens will also come with a powerful, built-in VCM image stabilization mechanism which virtually eliminates camera shake and blur. Not only that, its lens is also able to capture stunning macro shots even from as close as 2” away.

Whenever you are not making use of the lens, it will retract fully into the camera body, placing it behind a removable automatic lens cap, allowing the Stylus 1 to fit into a coat pocket without batting an eyelid. The Stylus 1 will also feature a Fast Touch AF system from the Olympus PEN series for near-instant, precision focusing thanks to the tiltable LCD touchscreen monitor.

Not only that, there is also Full HD video recording capability, while you will also have Art Filters thrown into the mix with bracketing option, five Art Effects and Photo Story, too. The Olympus Stylus 1 will arrive later this December for $699.99 a pop, although there is only one color to choose from – black.

R2-D2 Wristwatch tells the time as it is, galactic style

r2-d2-wristwatchWhich is the most useful droid around in the Star Wars universe? Most folks would automatically vote for R2-D2, as that is one astromech droid who has saved the Rebel Alliance many times over. We have seen R2-D2 arrive in the form of a timepiece before, but this time around, it comes in a far more advanced form factor. The $249.95 R2-D2 Wristwatch happens to be an official Star Wars collector’s watch, where it bears the hallmark colors and design motifs of the most popular droid in the galaxy.

Heck, this wristwatch even comes with Artoo’s iconic optical lenses, where it will be able to let you know of the time by pointing a red-tipped hand to the hour on an outer dial. Apart from that, there is also a yellow-tipped hand that counts off the minutes on an inner dial. The watch’s bezel itself will be able to turn by hand in order to mimic the spinning of the droid’s dome, all the while making a winding sound. Accurate Japanese quartz movement ensures that the time is kept properly, while the stainless steel case comes across in a splash resistant form factor. Each purchase will also arrive in a collector’s box that includes a numbered certificate of authenticity, which means that this is an officially licensed product by LucasFilm.

The Power Tap offers energy with a twist

power-tapIf plumbing is not your cup of tea, then the £19.99 Power Tap might actually change the way you think or approach the situation. With the Power Tap, you are able to enjoy electricity quite literally on tap, where it sports colored light indicators, where blue stands for charging and red whenever it is on standby. Don’t you think that it also gives the illusion that current is always stronger whenever it is pouring out of a spout? Fret not though, it will not flood your home with electricity should you leave it on.

With the Power Tap, it will offer a different way of turning on the switch on the wall, since you turn it on like a literal household tap. Once done, just insert your USB device and it should start to get juiced up in no time at all. It is made from strong ABS plastic, and you can be sure that once you have gotten one of these, you will most probably clamor for more. Your family and friends who arrive too might want to get one (or a few) of their own after dropping by your place.

Impossible Instant Lab is the modern day Polaroid instant photo

impossible-instant-labPhoto booths at weddings seem to be one part that is eternally popular, and different couples do it differently. Some leave an instant camera there for folks to shoot a photo and print it out on the spot, while others prefer to have a professional photographer capture the couples there (with their props) and print it out using a photo printer tucked away in a corner somewhere. I suppose the advent of technology makes things easier, as with the case of the £240 Impossible Instant Lab.

After all, smartphone cameras have gotten more and more impressive in their photo taking capabilities over the years, so much so that they have far outstripped the quality of entry level digital cameras of yesterday. With the Impossible Instant Lab, you will be able to turn those photos stored on your iPhone into an actual photo, and the entire shebang is extremely easy to use, printing out photos in a matter of seconds. From there, you will just need to wait for a little while and see these photos develop in the palm of your hand. Using it is a no-brainer, just select a photo on your iPhone, place the handset on the cradle, and press the eject button; and you’re good to go.

i3Display offers a unique commercial solution for stores to display their wares

i3displayIf you are a store owner, running a small mom and pop business, or happen to own a huge chain of stores across the country (or countries), I am quite sure that you are more than familiar with the power of advertising which could help push sales figures through the roof. Each physical store has a limited amount of square footage, so with the large number of items that you are carrying in there, the different brands would be competing against one another for the eyeballs of customers. M3Tech of Malaysia has come up with a rather unique solution in the form of the i3Display, which will function as an intelligent salesman mechanism.

For instance, you might not have enough sales personnel to attend to the customers walking through the store, so they can always make use of the i3Display to check out the kinds of items that you already happen to have on your shelves by flipping through a digital kiosk. There is an Android-powered display which will arrive with 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, making it a snap to update a slew of kiosks throughout an entire store with new information. Of course, it is always good to have a back up, and M3Tech does offer you the chance to update these kiosks individually and manually using an SD memory card or a USB flash drive.

The interface depends on what the client wants to display, and there are a few levels on the menu system so that a store that carries, for example, 10 different brands, will be able to showcase a slew of devices or items under various categories. It will arrive in three form factors – the usual boring kiosk that we see at shopping malls these days, as well as arriving in a floor stand; where one has a single display, while the other would be a dual display version.

Screen sizes of the LED displays range from 42” to 46”, and they are all on wheels for easy transportation and moving around. Bear in mind that this is meant for indoor use only, as there are many other issues to take into consideration when one moves into the outdoor realm. Right now, we do know that the Android-powered screens will run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean which should be sufficient for most commercial users.

There is also another version which will run on the Raspberry Pi platform, and that is more flexible since it boasts of the capability to display multiple brands and multiple products as mentioned earlier. All in all, this is definitely a greener way of advertising a ton of items in your store to the masses, and it also lets those who prefer to browse alone do so at their own pace without being seemingly “harassed” by store assistants. Those who are interested will be able to rent such kiosks for several days’ use, or to purchase it outright (with full support thrown into the package) for a more cost effective and long term advertising effort.

LumaGlo Freedom Lighting lets you light up your home unlike ever before

lumagloHome lighting solutions have become a whole lot more power efficient these days, especially when we are all moving towards a greener environment. Hence, it is far from surprising to hear about the LumaGlo Freedom Lighting, where this particular LED lighting strip system comes across as a fully customizable workaround, as it provides users with the freedom to choose the length, color, pattern, intensity, and even the power source, with the central controls hailing from an iPhone or Android device.

The LumaGlo Freedom Lighting is a Bluetooth-enabled, LED strip controller which will hook up sans wires to your smartphone, letting you have total and full control over your home lighting system. You will be able to turn it on, turn the lights off, and even opt to set timers so that you will arrive home to a well lit abode at the right time. With up to 16 million colors to choose from, you will be spoilt for choice, although chances are pretty high that not everyone will be able to tell the difference in color when they’re so close together on the same scale. Each LED is individually addressable, letting one pick dynamic patterns and color combinations.

Since there are already so many ways to make choices, the LumaGlo Freedom Lighting arrives in a variety of lengths that include 1 foot, 2 feet and 5 feet, and all of them can be linked together up to 10 feet. There is a drawback to the system though if you are on the lookout for greater lengths, as it comes at the expense of reduced brightness.

Just how will LED lighting strips come in handy? Well, for starters, they offer users the ability to illuminate spaces in ways which would never be achieved in the past using the standard issue light bulb. Heck, there is also a modular power option for those who are always on the move. Some other practical uses of LumaGlo in everyday situations include increasing visibility, to be seen in clubs or at raves, to decorate a skateboard or bike, or even used at events or ceremonies.

Hauppauge launches HD PVR Rocket for consoles

hauppauge_hdpvr_rocket_hdrHauppauge, a name that most of us would be familiar with, is back with yet another device which will further expand its video recorder family after launching their HD PVR Rocket at Paris Games Week recently. You might sit back and roll your eyes, wondering just what the big deal is when it comes to “yet another” video recorder. Well, here is the kicker – the HD PVR Rocket happens to be able to record video game play from PlayStation, Xbox and PC gaming consoles, and it will also be able to do so in Full HD resolution, now how about that? This would make the HD PVR Rocket as the ultimate portable video recorder since it is tiny enough to fit into your hand. Just how light is it? Try 4.6 oz for size.

Recording video is not all that the HD PVR Rocket does, it also comes with a built-in audio mixer and sports a USB port the avid gamer is able to plug in a USB thumb drive in order to record game play. Since USB thumb drives are just about dirt cheap these days, and you will most probably have amassed quite a collection of them from trade shows, a 16GB capacity USB thumb drive is said to be able to stash away up to 4 hours of video game play at an HD resolution of 1080p when plugged into the HD PVR Rocket.

The HD PVR Rocket might sound rather familiar to some, but that is because it follows in the footsteps of the HD PVR 2, which was first introduced in September last year. The HD PVR 2 then was the highest quality video game recorder on the market, but it required either a PC or Mac to store video recordings. With the HD PVR Rocket, you no longer need to take that particular route since it functions as a standalone device, and will not require a computer of any kind to perform a recording.

Expect the HD PVR Rocket to arrive in Europe from November 15 onward, as it bears a recommended retail price of 169 euros, while those living in North America will have to fork out the equivalent in dollars.
