Newer Canon EOS M Expected In Second Half Of 2014

Newer Canon EOS M Expected In Second Half Of 2014Just last week Canon announced the EOS M2, the successor to Canon’s first mirrorless camera system, the EOS M. While the camera brought about new features and improvements over its successor, it wasn’t as big a change as some might have liked or expected, but as it turns out there is a chance that the EOS M2 might simply be a stopgap between the EOS M and a newer EOS M camera that could come out in the second half of 2014. This is according to an interview that DCWatch has had with Masaya Maeda from Canon Japan, who revealed that an EOS M3 camera would arrive in the second half of 2014.

While it is unclear as to what sort of specs we might be looking at with the EOS M3, it supposedly will come with an EVF, a feature which is currently missing from the EOS M and the EOS M2. Maeda has also stated that video performance will be the key feature of future EOS M cameras, although he did not mention if this would be starting with the EOS M3 or future models. Canon is also reportedly looking into releasing a prosumer/professional mirrorless camera, which we guess would be to compete with the likes of Sony who have released high-end cameras in the past, such as the NEX-7 and the recently launched A7 and A7R cameras.

Canon’s Long-Awaited EOS M2 Hopes To Improve On Canon’s First Mirrorless With Improved AF

    photo01_b

Canon’s first kick at the mirrorless market was without question a disappointing debut: The EOS M first launched in 2012, and was a let-down mostly because of its incredibly sluggish autofocus, as well as other quirks like a screen blackout that happened immediately after taking a picture. Canon seems to have addressed both issues with the new design, added Wi-Fi, and left most of the rest untouched.

The M2 has been officially announced via Canon China and Canon Japan so far, with English-language countries likely due for releases later today. The details of the camera are known, however, and include a body design that resembles the original, but that’s actually slightly smaller and packs new Wi-Fi connectivity for sharing and image transfer.

The big selling point however remains the improved autofocus, which was by far the biggest area requiring improvement on the original. Canon promises more than double the AF speed with its new Hybrid CMOS AF II system, which double checks the window for focus information that the original did for that improvement. Canon has kept the same APS-C 18 megapixel sensor in the M2, but the sensor wasn’t the issue, so this could be a very good entrant in the MILC field, so long as the AF actually does provide significant improvements over the original.

The M2 will ship in Japan in mid-December, but no word yet on when it’ll come to the U.S. A pre-holiday ship date would definitely help Canon move a few of these via the under-the-tree crowd, however, so fingers crossed it arrives before the new year. I always like the look of the EOS M, but with the M2, it might have some substance behind all that style, too. Check out Canon Rumors for the full spec sheet if you’re interested in the nitty-gritty.

Alleged Canon EOS M2 Specs Leaked

Alleged Canon EOS M2 Specs LeakedWe have been hearing rumors about the Canon EOS M’s successor for a while now, and while it was originally rumored earlier this year that it would be announced soon, last we heard it seems that we might only expect it in 2014 instead. In any case according to the folks at Digicame-Info, it seems that they have managed to get their hands on the alleged specs of the upcoming camera, which apparently will be making its debut at CES 2014. We will be live at CES 2014 come January next year, so do check back with us then to see if the rumors pan out.

In any case since these aren’t official specs, take it with a grain of salt for now, but so far what we might be able to expect from the EOS M2 is an 18MP APS-C sensor with a hybrid CMOS AF II system. Its AF speed is said to be 2.3 times faster than its predecessor, and will be powered by the DIGIC 5 image processing engine. It will sport a 4.6fps burst rate, an ISO range between 100-12,800, built-in WiFi, and comes with the ability for smartphone users to operate the camera remotely, as well as supporting wireless transfer of images from the camera to the smartphone. Doesn’t sound too shabby, does it?

Canon EOS M Successor Now Rumored For 2014 Launch

Canon EOS M Successor Now Rumored For 2014 LaunchLast we heard, the Canon EOS M’s successor was rumored to be announced “soon”, although the term “soon” can hardly be used to describe the latest rumor, which suggests that the EOS M’s successor will most likely only see an announcement in 2014. With CES 2014 taking place early next year, that is a viable platform for the camera’s announcement, if not we guess we will have to wait for a separate Canon event or wait for the press release if Canon decides the successor is not worthy of an event of its own.

Not much is known about the EOS M’s specs, other than what the rumors are saying, which is that it will not be too big of a departure from the current-gen EOS m. However it is rumored to be slightly smaller and is said to provide a slightly better AF experience, so if you think the current EOS M could do with a better AF system (our review found the auto-focus slow), hopefully its successor will not disappoint. The next-gen EOS M is also said to feature a 20MP sensor taken from recently announced EOS 70D. In any case take all of this with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys make of these alleged changes/improvements? Are there additional features you’d like to see in the next-gen EOS M?

New Canon EOS M Announcement Coming Soon [Rumor]

New Canon EOS M Announcement Coming Soon [Rumor]We have been hearing rumors that Canon is set to launch a new EOS M camera, and according to the folks at Canon Rumors, they have been tipped off that a launch for the alleged device is coming soon. Apparently Canon will be announcing two new EOS M cameras, one of them being a slight upgrade over the current EOS M, while the other will be a more higher-end device, although the exact specifications of either camera remain unknown at this point in time. For those familiar with the current EOS M, we guess a slight upgrade will not be hard to imagine, while the alleged higher-end EOS M could come with an EVF as one of its features.

The new EOS M is also expected to be priced much lower than the current model, making it more accessible to the masses, not to mention probably providing a nice price contrast compared to the higher-end model. It has also been rumored to come in a variety of colors which we guess would make it more appealing to consumers who are a bit sick of the regular black finish. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but no word on when we could be seeing an announcement ,but hopefully “coming soon” means in the next couple of weeks, not months, but do check back with us at a later date for the details.

Canon Rumored To Relaunch EOS M System With New Cameras And Lenses

Canon Rumored To Relaunch EOS M System With New Cameras And LensesWhen it comes to mirrorless cameras, Canon seems to be one of the last few manufacturers to jump aboard the bandwagon, undoubtedly ceding market share to their competitors such as Olympus and Sony who beat them to the punch. While the Canon brand is a strong one, the EOS M does not seem to be the raving success that Canon probably had in mind which is why rumors of Canon possibly relaunching the system might not seem like a stretch of the imagination.

These rumors were sent to the folks at Canon Rumors indicating that the Japanese company had plans to “relaunch” the EOS M system in the coming months with possibly two new camera models. One of them is expected to completely replace the current EOS M, while the other is expected to be a higher-end model. The rumors have also suggested that the new systems will be getting up to three new lenses in 2013 which will certainly give users more options to choose from, and perhaps make it more competitive against the likes of the mirrorless systems from Sony and Nikon.

Take this with a grain of salt for now and be sure to check out our review of the EOS M to decide if Canon’s mirrorless offerings would be suitable for you.

Canon EOS M To Come In “Bay Blue” Finish, Designed By Japanese Art Director

Canon EOS M To Come In Bay Blue Finish, Designed By Japanese Art DirectorIf you were thinking about picking up the Canon EOS M mirrorless camera for yourself but are bored of the colors it is available in, it seems that over in Japan Canon will be introducing a “Bay Blue” version of the EOS M (pictured above). While this might just be a new color scheme that Canon cooked up, it is actually not and this color scheme was actually put together by famous Japanese art director, Chie Morimoto under the “Travel” theme. As you can see, this Bay Blue version will feature a dark blue Canon EOS M with some brown highlights, presumably to simulate leather or some sort of material. Admittedly it looks a bit more “friendly” and less “boring”, but then again it does just boil down to personal preference. The Bay Blue version of the Canon EOS M will be available come 25th of April although we’re not sure if it is limited to the Japanese market or if it will be available around the world.

Canon EOS M Review: Playing Catch-Up in the Mirrorless Race

Mirrorless cameras have matured into serious alternatives to DSLRs. Some of the biggest brands failed to anticipate that success. One of them, Canon, is now trying to play catch up. Their first attempt, the EOS M, dropped this autumn after much anticipation. More »
