Is There Really a Market for $32,000 Mushroom Flash Drives?

I’ve seen my fair share of incredibly odd devices for computers over the years, but most of the really bizarre stuff is rather cheap. You have to figure that the stranger a device is, the less money it has to cost for people to be interested. That isn’t the case with a company called Shawish that has just unveiled some new USB flash drives that look like mushrooms.

shawish usb mushroom news

First off, I don’t think there are a lot of mushroom enthusiasts out there that have been sitting around counting the days till they could find a fungus-inspired storage device for their computer. Oh, did I mention that these drives cost up to $32,000 each? Yep, these aren’t any old mushroom-shaped storage devices, they’re made out of precious metal encrusted with real gemstones.

The mushroom flash drives are made from yellow, pink, or white 18 karat gold. They’re also bejeweled with rubies, sapphires, or diamonds. The flash drives themselves have just 32 GB of storage space. You’d think for this price, they’d splurge for a 1TB model at least.

I just don’t see anyone buying one of these for that kind of money. Who knows, maybe there really is someone out there with more money than sense. And who also loves mushrooms.

An Actual Ferrari is Cheaper Than This Ferrari Watch

When it’s time for that mid-life crisis, you’ll look to the Ferrari of course. It’s beautiful and expensive and you think it will make young girls dig you. But now there’s a matching watch that you have to buy too. Who cares if you will spend the rest of your life paying for them right?

hublot ferrari watch 1

The Hublot MP-05 LaFerrari is designed to be a complimentary timepiece to the car. The LaFerrari was announced in March with a hybrid V12 engine with nearly 1000 horsepower. The car will cost you $1.3 million (USD). There are only 499 limited edition units after all. The MP-05 watch will be even harder to get. Hublot is only making 50 of them. The watch will cost an estimated $300,000, which is more than many new Ferrari models. It’s still cheaper than the LaFerrari itself, so that’s something.

It features a sapphire crystal facade sculpted to imitate the lines of the automobile. The casing is made of tough PVD titanium. The movement is powered by 637 individual components. The MP-05 has a 50-day power reserve too.

This watch is so awesome that it is wound with a special power drill that spins a series of 11 barrels arranged down the center of the face. As the barrels wind down, a cylindrical indicator on the left face counts down the days.

NiteCore TM26 Tiny Monster Flashlight Kicks out Insane 3500 Lumens

You know how your mother always told you not to stare into the Sun? Well, the same guidance holds true with this small flashlight that can blast out a whopping 3500 lumens of brightness.

tm26 tiny monster flashlight

The NiteCore TM26 “Tiny Monster” Flashlight uses four superbright CREE XM-L U2 LEDs to light up the darkest of nights. Despite its monstrous brightness level, it can actually run for up to 1000 hours using four 2600mAh Li-ion 18650 or eight CR123 batteries. You can also use fewer batteries in an emergency.

The TM26 gives you eight selectable brightness levels, and displays this information, as well as voltage and battery levels on a built-in OLED display. It’s also IPX-8 waterproof, so it can be submerged safely in up to two meters of water. The flashlight measures about 5.59″ long, and weighs just under a pound (without batteries).

Keep in mind that you’ll pay dearly for the power to blind your neighbors. The Tiny Monster flashlight is available for order over at ThinkGeek for $389.99(USD).

Iron Man Mk. 42 Life-Size Figure: Iron Statue

Some Iron Man fans are not too keen on his gold-heavy Mark XLII armor, but if you’re absolutely enamored with it Sideshow Collectibles has the ultimate item for you – a life-size replica of the suit.

Omni VR Treadmill Interface: Work Hard & Play Hard at the Same Time

I’m sure many of you still dream about owning the so-called “Ultimate FPS Simulator.” If you can wait for a few more months, you just might have one in your home, albeit at a smaller scale. A company called Virtuix is currently working on Omni, an omnidirectional treadmill controller for virtual environments.

omni virtuix treadmill

The Omni can sense not only when you’re running or walking but also when you’re jumping. It can also emulate crouching movements by bending over. The Omni will supposedly work with all PC games when it’s released, which is certainly a neat plus. Here’s a quick video showing how one moves about on the Omni:

Here’s the Omni being used with Skyrim, with the help of a Kinect for head targeting:

Finally, here’s the Omni with the year’s most anticipated gaming product, the Oculus Rift, comboing to present a new way to play Team Fortress 2:

You can see a couple more videos of the Omni in action on YouTube.

Keep in mind that the Omni isn’t a mechanical treadmill – it’s a passive walking surface on which you wear a pair of special low-friction shoes to walk.  The waist support in the middle is designed to keep you from falling over, of course. You can read more about how it works over on their FAQ.

Virtuix is planning to launch a Kickstarter fundraiser later this May or June. The retail price for the Omni may be between $400 to $600 (USD), which isn’t surprising considering what it can do. Mirror’s Edge is about to become a fitness video.

Kid’s Walker NT: Mini Mech

Can’t afford the sweet Kuratas mech? Maybe you can pass on your dream of riding a robot to your kid. Japanese company Sakakibara Kikai recently released a video showing an updated version of its Kid’s Walker machine. It looks a lot more toy-like now, but it’s also more menacing because it has a gigantic drill on its left limb, in case Junior wants to play some Bioshock IRL.

Check out a Newtype lucky kid testing the Kid’s Walker NT in the video below:

I’m not sure if the Kid’s Walker NT is already for sale, but if the price of the previous model is any indication you’ll need tens of thousands of dollars to earn the title of world’s best parent.

Dark as Night Motorcycle Helmet Brings out the Bat in the Man

Sorry UD Replicas, but Helmet Dawg beat you to this one – a Batman-themed motorcycle helmet. It’s not officially licensed though, so Helmet Dawg prefers to call it the Dark as Night Helmet: Black Edition. Or perhaps it isn’t actually a nod to Batman but to Felix the Cat.

According to DudeIWantThat, the helmet is made of a “DOT-approved Thermo-Plastic Poly Alloy shell”, while the bat ears are “molded from impact-resistant plastics [with] tensile strength rated at 2,400 psi.” In other words, it’s as protective as any other decent motorcycle helmet, just less aerodynamic.

MōVI Stabilized Camera Gimbal Might Shake Up Cinematography

A couple of months ago we saw the SteadyWheel, a very affordable camera accessory that can help you stabilize your shots. The MōVI is way more expensive than the SteadyWheel, but for what it can do – and the money, time and effort it could save – it seems like more bang for the filmmaker’s buck.

movi freefly stabilized camera gimbal

Made by Freefly, MōVI is a “digital 3-axis gyro-stabilized handheld camera gimbal.” It can be operated by one person or you can enlist another person to control the camera while you carry and move it about. Here’s a quick demo of the MōVI’s stabilization powers:

Mind not blown? Here’s what it can do:

Wow right? Once you don’t have to worry about keeping the camera stable I imagine it frees directors and cinematographers to think of a lot of different shots and angles. It helps that the MōVI only weighs about 4lbs. I’m pretty sure those of you who are into TV and filmmaking are scraping your brains off of your walls right now. Finally, here’s the final cut of the short film. It was directed by Vincent Laforet, and yes, every shot you’ll see was made with the MōVI.

Laforet said Freefly will release two models of the MōVI. The MōVI M10 will be the first one to be released. It will be priced at $15,000 (USD) and will have a 10lb. capacity. A smaller model called the M5 will follow for half the price. Later on, Freefly plans to release the big bad M20, which should be able to carry heavier cameras and accessories. I highly recommend you check out Laforet’s website for more details on the MōVI.

MB&F HM4 Final Edition Watch: Mortgage Everything You Own to Get It

There’s something to be said about watches that cost more than cars. Needless to say that this analog wonder of a watch will cost you a pretty penny, but it will probably last you a lifetime. But how about watches that cost as much as your house? Or two?

mbf hm4 final edition horological machine

The MB&F HM4 Final Edition Watch isn’t just any old watch, it’s a “horological machine” which has 311 components. It’s coated in plack PVD titanium and its design was inspired by the F-117 Nighthawk. The turbine-like pods for time and power reserve indicators are connected to the power reserve using unique vertical gear trains.

This watch looks simply amazing, but get ready to mortgage everything you own, because they sell for $230,000(USD) apiece and they’ll only be making eight of these.

Borderlands 2 Diamond Plate Loot Chest Has Both Real and Virtual Rare Drops

The Ultimate Loot Chest pre-order bundle for Borderlands 2 has become a sought after items among fans of the franchise because of the titular container. The remaining units of the bundle are selling for way higher than its original price of $150. Luckily for fans Gearbox has stepped in with another bundle that includes a loot chest.

borderlands 2 diamond plate loot chest

The new Borderlands 2 Diamond Plate Loot Chest doesn’t come with a copy of the game, but it makes up for it with a ton of other goodies, including a replica of the Goliath mask, a code for an in-game Goliath head so your characters can match your new gear, 20 cards with codes for Legendary items, four Wanted posters featuring the playable characters, window decals featuring the weapon manufacturers and of course the sweet loot chest itself.

The bundle will be sold at ThinkGeek, at the Gearbox shop and at Forbidden Planet for $100 (USD) starting June 2013. It’s limited to just 5,000 copies so make sure to keep an eye out for it if you want one. It would’ve been more considerate of Gearbox if they just mass produced the loot chest, but I guess this is better than nothing. As Travis B mentioned in the comments, Gearbox will mass produce this bundle. The only thing that’s unique to the first 5,000 units will be the certificate of authenticity. Thanks for the heads up Travis B!
