Samsung has taken the wraps off its new Chromebook 2 Series, offering two different ARM-based sizes and borrowing the stitched, textured finish of the Galaxy S5 for its lid. Both … Continue reading
Prior to MWC 2014, Samsung teased that they would be making an Exynos related announcement and while these aren’t the Exynos Infinity chipsets that was teased, Samsung did announced the Exynos 5422 and the Exynos 5260 chipsets. The former will be an octa-core chipset, while the latter will be a hexa-core chipset.
So starting with the Exynos 5422, this is an octa-core chipset that will rely on the same big.LITTLE architecture that Samsung used with its Exynos chipsets that was announced back at CES 2013 last year. Th Exynos 5422 will feature four ARM Cortex-A15 cores clocked at 2.1GHz, and four smaller ARM Cortex-A7 cores clocked at 1.5GHz. According to Samsung, the new chipset will be able to perform 34% better than its predecessor. (more…)

A few months ago, Apple announced the iPhone 5s which shocked the world not because of its design or its features, but rather an industry first for smartphones thanks to the A7’s 64-bit chip that made its way into the device. It wasn’t too long after that that companies such as Samsung revealed that they were also working on 64-bit chipsets and it seems that these chipsets could debut as soon as CES 2014. This is thanks to a recent tweet by Samsung on their Exynos Twitter account, where they posted the picture above in which the tagline reads, “Flying even higher in 2014”, suggesting that we could see new Exynos technology at CES 2014.
At this point it remains unknown as to what Samsung might have up their sleeves, but there is a possibility that whatever announcement Samsung plans to make, it could be related to the company’s 64-bit chipset, which seems to be in line with what we have heard. Will the 64-bit Exynos chipset make its way into the Samsung Galaxy S5? The rumors seem to be pointing towards that, along with how it would make sense for Samsung to do so as well, if they want to compete with Apple’s iPhone 5s. In any case Samsung’s Exynos 5 series of octa-core chipsets made their debut back in January of 2013, so it wouldn’t be out of the question for Samsung to announce the next big thing around the same time next year as well.

Exynos 5 Octa demos 8 cores working at once and other feats of CPU strength (video)
Posted in: Today's ChiliJust in case yesterday’s news that Samsung is ready to enable new features on its Exynos 5 Octa chips wasn’t clear, ARM has published a few demo videos to show what it can do. All three are embedded after the break, and the first one highlights how the Exynos 5 Octa 5420 can activate some or all of its 8 cores to maximize responsiveness while launching and using Quickoffice. As you can see above in the screenshot, all eight cores are activated while launching the app, then unused ones switch off for more efficiency. Another video shows how it runs Angry Birds Rio on just the four Cortex-A7 “LITTLE” side of the CPU, rarely activating any of their more power-hungry A15 friends. The last demo video shows how its Mali-T628 GPU activates to process images faster and more efficiently than the CPU alone can.

Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa processors have thus far been of a variety that allows for four of the eight cores to be used at one time. This will no longer be the reality beginning in the fourth quarter of this year, however, with Samsung announcing that with the use of Heterogeneous Multi-Processing the Exynos 5 […]
