WhatsApp Now Has Half A Billion Active Users

WhatsApp Now Has Half A Billion Active Users

Its safe to say that WhatsApp is the most popular cross platform messaging service in the world. It has numbers to back up this statement. Just today the company announced that it has reached the significant milestone of having half a billion active users around the world. Collectively users are sharing 700 million photos and 100 million videos every single day through WhatsApp. Some of its fastest growing markets over the last few months have been Brazil, India, Mexico and Russia.

WhatsApp was recently in the news a lot for a totally different reason. Facebook decided to acquire it for a whopping $19 billion. Some believed that Facebook grossly overpaid for WhatsApp, however CEO Mark Zuckerberg is of the view that the service is worth more than the $19 billion he proverbially paid. The deal has already received the green light from FTC, approval from international regulatory bodies is pending.

It has taken WhatsApp roughly a month and a half to add 50 million new active users. The last update on user stats it posted was in February when WhatsApp had 450 million active users. WhatsApp is very well on its way of reaching one billion users. It has witness rapid growth in the past year alone and its certainly not going anywhere anytime soon.

Facebook Paper App For iOS Updated

Facebook Paper App For iOS UpdatedFacebook has just announced a major update to its iOS app, where it claims that there are new features thrown into the mix, including the likes of new story buttons, notifications, and photo comments, among others. Facebook’s Paper App was first introduced to the world at the end of January before it hit the iOS platform in the next month. After 2 months of use, Facebook Paper has “grown up” to arrive at version 1.1.

Facebook Paper 1.1 is an upgrade that will enable users to access specifically woven social content in a cleaner and less cluttered environment. The features club would be on the receiving end of new additions such as birthdays and events notifications. Birthday and event news are now embedded in the globe icon located on the top of the Facebook page, instead of being part of the news feed.

Apart from that, photo comments too, have been thrown into the mix, where users are able to attach a photo to the comment thread of a post. This feature happens to be rather popular with the web version, and according to Michael Reckhow, product manager for Facebook, “Photo comments are something we added to Facebook not too long ago, and we found that it’s now something people can’t live without.”

How do you find your updated Facebook Paper experience on iOS been?

Facebook Rumored To Launch Their Own Mobile Ad Network

Facebook Rumored To Launch Their Own Mobile Ad NetworkJust like how Google has AdMob and how Apple has iAds, it seems that Facebook themselves could be thinking about launching their own mobile ad platform. This is according to Re/code’s sources who have mentioned that it is possible that Facebook could be announcing their own mobile ad platform at their F8 developer conference in San Francisco which will be held at the end of the month.

Since Facebook has pretty much all of our user information, such as the type of company we work for, our education background, our likes, and so on, they are said to leverage that information to make their platform a more attractive space to advertise on since advertisers will be able to create even more targeted ads.

Naturally Facebook has declined to comment on the matter but this is hardly a surprising move. Facebook, over the past few years, has shown itself to be extremely eager at monetizing its social networking service. This started out as regular banner ads placed all over the page, then it transitioned into other forms of revenue-generating tools, such as allowing users to pay to boost the reach of their posts on their Facebook Pages.

There are even sponsored posts which shows up as a regular post in your News Feed, showing viewers certain pages or brands that their friends might like, and so on. The idea of a mobile ad network is not new either as earlier this year, Facebook mentioned that they were experimenting with the idea, so we wouldn’t be surprised if it were made a reality. Either way we guess we will find out more on the 30th of April, so do check back with us then for the details.

Facebook Nearby Friends Feature: Get Ready for Some Stalking!

Facebook is a powerful tool when it comes to connecting with people that you’ve met, as well as being arguably the most important social networking site on the planet. This can be both good and bad, and while I’m not sure if I want to share my location at all times on my timeline, I’m sure that it could be useful in some cases.

Facebook’s new Nearby Friends feature is disabled by default. It allows you to get alerts when some of your FB friends are nearby. It could definitely makes things easier when you’re out on the town, in the same general area, but have trouble actually locating your friends, something that actually happened to me today.

While I can also see the possible problems of such a feature, when it comes to stalkers, etc, at least it’s fully optional, and defaults to being switched off. The problem is that a lot of people aren’t going to remember to switch back off when they don’t want it running. They’ll just leave it on once they set it and forget it. At least you can choose who you do and don’t share your location with, so that should help some.

It’s Time to Ditch Facebook and Start Over

It's Time to Ditch Facebook and Start Over

Most of us have had Facebook accounts for the past few years, if not a decade. But time and bloat have turned once-beloved font of nostalgia into an onslaught of faux-sentimental sludge from strangers. So as Facebook stands poised to break itself into a bunch of different apps, we say to you: Screw it. It’s time to start fresh.

Facebook Nearby Friends Feature Introduced

Facebook Nearby Friends Feature Introduced“…there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” is a proverb that makes plenty of sense, and even more so in this day and age. After all, your family might be staying halfway across the world, and if you were to get in trouble today and need someone to bail you out from the current predicament, which better person than a friend to do so? Having said that, Facebook knows how important friends are to one’s life, which is why they have introduced a new feature that is known as Nearby Friends, allowing you to turn it on if you want to.

Nearby Friends would help you figure out just who on your contact list are nearby, or on the go. I suppose it is a two-way traffic if you were to enable Nearby Friends on your Facebook account – not only can you start to find people near you, it also works the other way around, so do prepare to get stalked – and then some.

Thankfully, Nearby Friends happens to be an optional feature, so you can continue living the hermit life if you want to, and being able to choose who you are able to see whenever you happen to be in a certain public space. You know, back in the day where there were no smartphones, all we had to rely on was our word – meet at a certain venue and selected time, and both parties would be as good as gold. These days, the convenience of easy communication has led to a lack of punctuality and plans do not seem to be as concrete as before, or it could just be my perception. [Press Release]
