Mitt Romney Breaks Facebook Rules With Self-Promoting Cover Photo [Facebook]

Oh, Mitt. This feels almost too easy. First you launched that self-promoting iPhone app that misspelled America. AMERICA! The country you’re trying to convince us to let you run. I can understand a typo—but good god, double-check the important shit, man. More »

Facebook app for Android updated

FacebookIf you’ve got Facebook on your Android phone, you probably would have noticed the notification to update the app on your phone today. Well, for those of you who haven’t yet – there’s a new version available now and it brings a bunch of new features to make your Facebook experience on Android better. The app now supports the use of your front facing camera, a new messaging feature that lets you switch between conversations, include friends of friends, share bigger photos and see who’s available, various bug fixes, security improvement and faster app login and navigation.

Unfortunately for those of you on Android 2.1 or earlier – this new update won’t be for you. Facebook has decided to make the app for Froyo (Android 2.2) and later. For those of you who are eligible for the update, head over to the Google Play Store to grab it now.

Facebook reportedly rolling out Timeline for pages on mobile devices

If you’ve been asking for Timeline on the Facebook pages of your mobile device, then today’s your lucky day. It seems that Facebook has started to deploy its Timeline functionality to pages on the mobile platform this week. One Australian fellow sent a screenshot of Timeline on his mobile device, as you can see above. And judging from the looks of it, the design now features a cover photo, detailed information in the “About” section, new icons on the page, and larger Like button, particularly on the iPhone app.

Also, as noted by Inside Facebook, some pages on the mobile web version have smaller Like buttons due to the Message button. It’s important to note that Timeline for personal profiles was already launched by Facebook a long time ago. Timeline for pages on mobile devices, on the other hand, has taken more time to be available. Facebook users will probably find this update nifty, since adding a cover photo and a detailed page description to profile pages will give users a better idea as to what that specific page is all about.

Facebook Now Shows Everyone Every Stupid Comment You Edited [Facebook]

Facebook comments are a fireworks show of impulsiveness, like much else with Facebook. Mercifully, FB just gave us the ability to edit things we wish we might have said differently. But now, our screwup is open for everyone to see. More »

How Facebook Tries (and Sort of Deliberately Fails) to Catch Pedophiles [Child Porn]

Doctors: Facebook, Skype lead to plastic surgery rise

A lot of the discussion about the rise in social networking tends to shift toward the subject of users being divorced from real life, sitting at home instead of going out and actually meeting people. One would assume this would lead to a society where vanity and looks don’t seem as important, but in fact it’s exactly the opposite that seems to be true.

Don’t believe us? Then just take a look at a plastic surgeon in Virginia that offers a “FaceTime Facelift, a procedure that was designed because people had been coming in and saying they wanted to look more photogenic when chatting with people over FaceTime. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Profile pictures on Facebook, video calls on Skype, it’s all part of the problem. Even though you may not ever see someone in real life, you want them to know that you look good.

New York plastic surgeon Dr. Adam Schaffner summed it up in a Mashable interview: “People will come in and say, ‘I saw myself in the mirror, but I didn’t really notice it until I saw myself on Facebook or on my iPhone or iPad. When you look in the mirror you’re seeing the mirror image of yourself. But when you see yourself on social media, you’re seeing yourself the way the world sees you.”

Facebook Android app update requires Froyo, tweaks messaging and picture taking

Facebook for Android update requires Froyo, tweaks messaging and picture taking

Just an FYI, the folks over at Facebook have shoved another update to their app for Android out the door today. While version 1.9.7 won’t add any new apps to your launcher, it does require some new permissions (phone status), require Android 2.2 and up, and offers some changes for the messaging and integrated camera experience. The camera app supports front-mounted shooter, while messaging improves switching between conversations, including friends of friends, sharing bigger photos and seeing who is available. There’s also various bug fixes, faster app login and navigation plus an unspecified security improvement, so even if your social media experience doesn’t include duckfaced self-pics and staying up on the latest gossip, it may be worth grabbing sooner rather than later.

Facebook Is Making Weddings and Engagements as Meaningless as Birthdays [Facebook]

Facebook redesigns Events listings, makes you an even bigger jerk for forgetting someone’s birthday

Image

Facebook, that tenuous connection between ourselves and the many casual acquaintances we’ve amassed over the years, has just rolled out a better way to keep track of events. Now it’s possible to plan that witty annual birthday greeting months in advance, thanks to the new calendar and list views on the social network’s Events page. You can also see suggested events and respond to invites from the comfort of the same page. The roll out follows the introduction the new Google+ Events page late last month, so now the two social networks can avoid awkwardly bumping into each other at parties.

Update: Looks like weddings and celebrations are getting overhauled, too. Clearly, it’s time to get down.
