Facebook Quietly Testing Out New Chat Feature

Facebook Quietly Testing Out New Chat FeatureIf you have been wondering what’s up with your Facebook chat feature today, it turns out that the issues you’re experiencing is not on your end, but rather on Facebook’s end as the company has recently announced that they are testing out a new chat feature. This chat feature, in case you have not noticed, will now display whether the user is on the web version of Facebook, or if they’re online via the Facebook Messenger app.

We’re not sure if we’re feeling these changes as the status indicators have typically been more than sufficient at determining if your friends are online or not. However if you’d rather be able to distinguish between chatting with a friend on the app or the web, then perhaps this recent change to the chat feature might be of interest to you.

While Facebook has yet to make an official announcement of the upcoming changes to the chat function, the social networking giant has reassured the public that they will be issuing a full statement once the feature has been finalized and has made its way across the majority of their users. In the meantime for those who are now experiencing the new chat feature, what do you guys think? Do you prefer this style or the previous format?

Facebook data harnessed to deliver real-time sports trends to broadcasters

Facebook data used to deliver realtime sports trends

Now that most of us take to social media to rant about our favorite sports teams, it was only a matter of time before our ramblings are collated and packaged as “trends” for the talking heads on television. SportStream, a company that specializes in collecting such data, has recently partnered with Facebook to deliver exactly that. Utilizing the social network’s Keyword Insights and Public Feed APIs, SportStream came up with a new analytics tool that content producers and broadcasters can use to find out what’s hot in the world of sports along with relevant audience info like location, gender and age. This way, interested parties can seek answers to questions such as “Whose fans are talking more about Game 2 of the World Series?” or “Are males under 30 interested in the Winter Olympics?” and that data will be presented in colorful charts as in the above graphic. While we’re not sure if this data has any real value to TV audiences, you could at least use it to impress your buddies… if they’re stats nerds anyway.

Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 Will Be Getting Facebook One-Click Login

Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 Will Be Getting Facebook One Click Login

We’re sure many of you Facebook users have been enjoying how simple it is to log into several applications with nothing more than a simple press of the Facebook one-click login feature. Sure – the app could potentially end up ruining your feed with notifications, but the price of convenience is pretty expensive these days. For now, only Android and iOS users have been able to enjoy the one-click login feature on their devices, but it looks like Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 may soon be benefiting from this feature as well. (more…)

Facebook’s one-click login coming to Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 apps

Android and iOS users have long been using their Facebook account for single click logging in to apps, and soon Windows 8 and Windows Phone users will be able to do the same. While the feature’s is still in its early stages (on WP8, it’s still in beta) Microsoft has announced that Foursquare, Adobe (Revel, Photoshop Express) and iHeartRadio are the first to get in on the action. Similar to Facebook Login on other platforms, using it will make it easier to share content from within the app, and connect your account info without punching in the credentials yet again. Foursquare will post your check-ins, the Adobe apps will let you upload photos easily, and you can share the station you’re listening to on iHeartRadio. Facebook users will probably want to keep an eye on their privacy settings to avoid oversharing, while holdouts from the social network can remain assured that Microsoft’s own account system is still positioned as the primary way to log in on the platform.

Google Rumored To Have Outbid Facebook For Snapchat With $4 Billion

Google Rumored To Have Outbid Facebook For Snapchat With $4 BillionYou might have heard earlier about how Facebook had reportedly tried to buy Snapchat for a whopping $3 billion, an offer which many are still wondering why Snapchat decided to turn down. As it turns out Facebook was not alone when it came to showing interest in the app, and according to a tweet by GigaOm founder, Om Malik, he reported on a rumor that he had heard on how Google had also attempted to buy Snapchat and that the search giant actually managed to outbid Facebook by offering up an eye-watering $4 billion instead.

Google’s plan for Snapchat was basically to leave it as it is, and keep it as a standalone app much like how Facebook did with Instagram. Unfortunately despite being offered so much money, Snapchat’s CEO, Eva Spiegel, was reported to have decided to turn both offers down because he believed that at the rate Snapchat was growing, it would be valued much higher further down the road. Was this a wise move by Spiegel to turn down $4 billion from Google? Hopefully it is, and hopefully this will not be the story of how Friendster was offered $30 million by Google but turned it down, and eventually faded away in obscurity.

Updated Facebook Messenger Rolls Out To The Masses

Updated Facebook Messenger Rolls Out To The MassesA couple of weeks ago, we heard that Facebook would be updating its Messenger app and give it a new look. Facebook has been taking a while to get up to speed with its update of the Messenger app, given that they had already updated their Facebook app to match the design language of iOS 7, but either way we guess better late than never, right? At that time the app was being pushed out to select handful of users to try, but now according to an updated post by Facebook, the updated version of Messenger is now available for both iOS and Android users, and you will be able to get your hands on the updated app via the iTunes App Store or Google Play store, depending on your platform.

The app will feature a brand new design and will even allow you to send text messages via the app to non-Facebook users. In a way we guess Facebook is hoping to expand its offering beyond the social network and compete with other messenger apps such as WhatsApp, LINE, BBM, and etc. The app will also introduce new icons that will help identify whether or not the person you’re about to message has the app. It’s kind of like how the “Send” button for Messages for iOS will turn blue when it detects that the other user has iMessage setup. In any case the app is free for download, so if you don’t already have it, you can check it out and see what all the fuss is about!

Snapchat Turned Down $3 Billion In Cash From Facebook [Report]

Snapchat Turned Down $3 Billion In Cash From Facebook [Report]

Facebook is no stranger to billion dollar acquisitions, it already spent a $1 billion to acquire Instagram. If the latest from The Wall Street Journal is to be believed, the world’s largest social network put an offer of $3 billion in cash to acquire Snapchat, only to be rejected. This basically means that the folks at Snapchat believe their company is worth more than what Facebook put on the table, it hasn’t been said if Snapchat came back with a counteroffer that’s in line with their expectations.

Snapchat currently touts over 100 millions users who send more than 350 million self-destructing snaps every day. The Journal says that CEO Evan Spiegel isn’t considering being acquired at this point in time, and that he won’t seriously consider it at least until next year. Apparently he’s hoping that the continued growth will push Snapchat’s valuation even higher. Snapchat’s meteoric growth as certainly caught Facebook’s attention. The social network tried to offer similar features to its users under Facebook Poke, but ever since its launch late last year, it hasn’t seem to have dented Snapchat’s user base in any major way. It obviously can’t be said for sure if Facebook will continue aggressively bidding for the company that’s already rejected an offer worth three Instagrams.
