Over 40% Of Americans Log Into Web Version Of Facebook Each Day

Over 40% Of Americans Log Into Web Version Of Facebook Each DayJust how popular is Facebook? Well, the social network giant, fresh from picking up Mobile Technologies under their growing list of companies acquired, has just unveiled the latest batch of US user metrics, where statistics point out that over 128 million users actually log into the web version of Facebook each day. That amounts to more than 40% of all Americans, now how about that?

On the mobile front, the number would have dropped a wee bit to 101 million in comparison, which accounts for nearly 33%, but it is not worrying at all since it still shows off just how popular the mobile version of Facebook is. Something tells me that most of the folks who log into their mobile version of Facebook would also log into the web version whenever they are at home or at work. Of course, the main target of these metrics would be advertisers so that they have a better idea on how to engage with their intended audience. Other than that, Facebook has every intention of moving away from the “monthly active users” metric, citing that to be an “old way of looking at the media world.”

Since you have owned a smartphone and/or tablet, do you still log into the web version of Facebook?

    Facebook To Acquire Mobile Technologies

Facebook To Acquire Mobile TechnologiesWhen you are a small company, you are extremely nimble and can navigate yourself through choppy waters with greater ease than behemoths, but somehow do not happen to have the kind of money that the big boys have – which requires you to be more creative in order to keep up with the competition. However, when a small company eventually “grows up” to be the proverbial 800 lbs gorilla, then allocating resources to develop new technologies might be considered counter productive when you can use the very same resources to snap up the up-and-coming small fry that have the technology which you are looking for. This is what Facebook has done, where they intend to move into the future by acquiring Mobile Technologies.

Mobile Technologies happens to be a company that specializes in speech recognition and translation, which means this acquisition does give some insight into what Facebook intends to do for the future. In fact, Mobile Technologies already has an app known as Jibbigo which is capable of translating text into different languages, while offering pronunciation cues via audio. This app might not have a long shelf life after the acquisition, but the technology could be used by Facebook to augment the social network giant’s future endeavors. [Facebook Post]

Facebook is reportedly working on a new app that will only be offered to the celebrities among us, according to sources who spoke with the folks over at AllThingsD. Facebook Allegedly Testing An Exclusive App For Celebrities

Facebook has over 1 billion users from around the world, the social network is also used by high profile celebrities to update their fans about their work and what not. Recently Facebook started testing verified Pages with a small number of celebrities, this feature would enable users to interact with the genuine page of their favorite celebrities without getting lost in the web of fake Pages that are a dime a dozen on the world’s biggest social network. Facebook may now be working on an app exclusively for celebrities, AllThingsD reports, claiming that the app is currently being tested with a small group of celebrities. The app apparently allows them, or the people who handle their social media presence, see what is being said about them on Facebook and will even let them join the conversation through that exclusive app.

To get an idea of exactly how this app will work, let us consider a fictional scenario. A leading actor wins an Oscar which leads to conversations and commentary from fans as well as general Facebook users. The app would allow that particular actor to easily sift through those conversations and comments, even reply to them if they so desire. This should theoretically make it more easier for celebrities to interact with their fans on the go, providing them a detailed insight about what’s being said about them and a clear channel for them to easily interact. The report cites a Facebook spokesperson saying that they will reveal more information about this project once it begins to be rolled out.

Facebook for iOS now integrated with OpenTable reservations and Rovi TV info

DNP Facebook integrates OpenTable reservations and Rovi TV info to its mobile Pages

Facebook has begun integrating OpenTable and Rovi TV guide information to its mobile Pages so users can now book a reservation and check out what’s coming on TV right within the social networking app. For the former, there’ll be a Reservations prompt located in the restaurant’s Facebook Page, underneath the address and hours of operation. Simply pick the desired date, time and party size, and you can book a table in seconds. The Rovi integration, on the other hand, provides information on upcoming episodes of your favorite TV shows so you’ll know exactly when and which channel it’ll be on. The OpenTable and Rovi integrations are live right now on the mobile web as well as in the latest iOS app update, which also lets you tap and search for hashtags. iOS users can go ahead and get it from the source link below, while Android users will have to sit tight for now.

Facebook to acquire speech recognition startup Mobile Technologies

Facebook to acquire speech recognition startup Mobile Technologies

Facebook may not seem like an obvious match for a machine translation company, but its just agreed to snatch up speech recognition startup Mobile Technologies to strengthen its chops in the area. If you’re not familiar with the outfit, they’re the minds behind the Android and iOS app Jibbigo, which translates your text or dulcet tones into other languages. While Zuckerberg and Co. haven’t revealed precise plans for the freshly-acquired firm, they note that the voice tech factors into their long-term plan for the web and mobile devices. “Voice technology has become an increasingly important way for people to navigate mobile devices and the web, and this technology will help us evolve our products to match that evolution,” said Tom Stocky, Facebook’s Director of Product Management. “We believe this acquisition is an investment in our long-term product roadmap as we continue towards our company’s mission.” There’s no word if Jibiggo will still receive support once Mobile Technologies joins the social network in Menlo Park, but we’ve gotten in touch with the team to find out.

Facebook Updates iOS App, Lets Users Make Restaurant Reservations

Facebook Updates iOS App, Lets Users Make Restaurant Reservations

Facebook today rolled out a new update of its app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The update touts full OpenTable integration,  meaning that users can now make restaurant reservations from within the Facebook app itself. They won’t have to leave the app, they don’t even have to launch a different app for restaurant reservations. Though that’s not all that this update has to offer, hashtag search support has also been included.

Making restaurant reservations through the new Facebook iOS app is very simple. Users just need to visit the Facebook Page of the restaurant they want to dine at, and then choose the date and time when they want to visit. After the user specifies the number of people that will make up the party, the app will display a list of available reservations. Reservations can only be made at those restaurants that participate with OpenTable in the U.S. Though it doesn’t matter if the user has an OpenTable account or not, they’ll be able to use the feature any way. In case the party can’t make it to the restaurant, it is possible to cancel the reservation through the app itself. The updated Facebook app is now available for download from the App Store.
