Not everyone was enamored by Facebook’s acquisition, and quick look at the comments our readers have left us have indicated that there are more than a fair share of people out there who highly oppose the acquisition. In fact it seems that because of the acquisition, Facebook’s share prices might have taken a hit. (more…)

Facebook and Oculus might be a great thing, really

With Facebook’s purchase of Oculus for a cool $2 billion, the tone turned sour almost instantly. The fervor surrounding virtual reality headwear quickly turned to disdain for a social platform … Continue reading

Which Is More Terrifying: Google or Facebook?

Mark Zuckerberg’s $2 billion buyout of Oculus Rift is just the latest step in Big Tech’s creepy march from software to sci-fi: Google and Facebook have dumped billions into companies that have nothing to do with their original projects in search or social. Relentlessly, the two companies are pushing toward a dystopian future in which privacy is null and we wear social networks on our faces.

Facebook Won’t Rebrand Oculus With Its Logo And Interface

Facebook Wont Rebrand Oculus With Its Logo And Interface

Facebook decision to acquire Oculus hasn’t been well received, at least by the people who provided the initial funding for this company through Kickstarter. It initially raised $2.5 million by seeking contributions from anyone and everyone, and confirmed yesterday that Facebook is picking it up for $2 billion. The New York Times ran a report yesterday citing a source which claimed that post acquisition, Facebook is going to rebrand Oculus with its logo and interface. If that would have been true, it would be akin to sprinkling salt on the wounds of all those who’re opposed to this acquisition.

Facebook: John Carmack, I Choose You!

Facebook: John Carmack, I Choose You!John Carmack, the man whom many associate with as the face of id Software for many years, is now an employee of Facebook. Yes sir, this is the new structure in the company known as Oculus VR after it was snapped up by the social network giant for a cool $2 billion, where that bit of news caused quite a ripple across news portals yesterday. The co-founder and lead designer of id Software oversaw a slew of technological developments within the gaming industry, and having left the company in 2013 to join Oculus VR, it goes without saying that he is now under Facebook’s payroll.

Facebook Buys Oculus VR to Get Hands on Virtual Reality Tech

Facebook is sitting on boatloads of money and the company isn’t afraid to use some of that cash to buy up companies that have interesting tech. Such is the case with a new purchase that sees Facebook buying up Oculus VR, the company behind the slick Oculus Rift VR headset. The purchase reportedly cost Facebook $2 billion (USD).

Many people think the buyout is a bad thing because Facebook is Facebook, and also because selling off the company goes against the independent spirit of the company’s initial funding via Kickstarter. I think the buyout could be a good thing. Facebook certainly has the capital to help Oculus develop low cost VR headsets and other gear, and the reach to bring them to market. Perhaps the purchase will mean that a production rollout will come faster.

Facebook is also a place that many people go to play casual games, and harass others with invites to play games. I could see Facebook working with developers to get casual games on the social network using the Oculus VR device.
