When Apple launched iOS 6, it was happy to announce that FaceTime was finally going to be available over 3G. Great! But now, 9to5mac is reporting, based on leaked screenshots, that using FaceTime over AT&T’s 3G network may require a paid-for contract bolt-on. Not so great. More »
One of the drawbacks to FaceTime was that unless you had a jailbroken iOS device, making FaceTime calls was only possible over WiFi connections. Well it looks like if you wanted to make FaceTime calls over cellular networks, you might have to start paying for it – at least as far as AT&T customers are concerned. The folks at 9to5 Mac have discovered that when attempting to enable FaceTime over cellular, they were greeted with the message above. According to AT&T who released a statement to the website, “We’re working closely with Apple on the new developer build of iOS6 and we’ll share more information with our customers as it becomes available.”
While it was not stated explicitly, it has been speculated that just like the Personal Hotspot feature, AT&T might be interested in charging users an additional fee for making FaceTime calls over cellular. After all, with the amount of data consumed for video calls, it we have to agree that it does not seem like a stretch that AT&T might want to cash in on that. However it seems that when they tried to enable that feature on a Verizon iPad WiFi + Cellular device, they were not met with any message and was enabled with no issue.

2012 iPhone’s maybe-finished front appears with center camera, may straighten our FaceTime chats
Posted in: Today's ChiliA claimed test sample of the 2012 iPhone’s complete body has already made the rounds, but it was using a rough front panel that wasn’t supposed to be wholly representative of the finished work. Frequent part leaker Apple.pro has uncovered a sample which might be closer to the real deal: the white example shows the space for the taller screen that we’ve come to know, just with a conspicuously shifted FaceTime camera that now sits above the speaker. It’s a small change, but it suggests Apple is going for much more of a family resemblance this time around — a previously claimed 2012 iPod touch panel was merging the fourth-generation iPod’s already centered camera with the taller display. While there’s still room for this to be a creative fake or an interim design, the consistency hints that Cupertino is keen to shake things up a bit for the iPhone’s fifth birthday.

When iOS 6 is released in a few months, iPhone Facetime users will finally be able to place video calls without the need for a Wi-Fi connection. It’s an improvement that was a long time coming, particularly when you consider that AT&T/Bell had offered a picturephone service over 40 years earlier. More »
