Advocacy groups notify AT&T of net neutrality complaint with the FCC over FaceTime restrictions

FaceTime over cellular

Public advocacy groups aren’t all that impressed with AT&T’s justifications for limiting FaceTime access over 3G and 4G to those who spring for its costlier Mobile Share plans. Free Press, Public Knowledge and the Open Technology Institute have served formal notice to AT&T that they plan to file a net neutrality complaint with the FCC within 10 days. It’s not hard to understand why, given the groups’ existing pro-neutrality stances: the Free Press’ policy lead Matt Wood argues that the carrier is unfairly pushing iOS users into plans they don’t need, a particularly sore point for iPad-only customers that have no AT&T phones to share. We’ve reached out to AT&T for comment, although we’re not expecting a change from its position that allowing app use over WiFi makes its restrictions okay. As for the FCC? It’s mum on the current situation. A literal reading of its net neutrality rules, however, doesn’t include a WiFi exemption and might not favor AT&T when Skype video is allowed and Verizon has no problems with unrestricted access.

Beats Pill Bluetooth speaker spotted at FCC and HMV: take one and call Dr. Dre in the morning

Beats Pill Bluetooth speaker spotted at FCC and HMV take one and call Dr Dre in the morning

The Beats by Dr. Dre badge has usually been attached to headphones and the occasional laptop or smartphone. We’ve never really seen it attached to dedicated speakers, however, and that’s where both an FCC filing and a sighting at UK retailer HMV’s online store raise a few eyebrows. The House that Dre Built appears on the edge of launching the Beats Pill, a Bluetooth wireless speaker with four drivers and a shape that more than explains the medicinal name. While we don’t know just how much of that signature Beats thump we’ll get, we do know from the FCC that the Pill can serve as a speakerphone, carries an aux-in jack and will last for a typical 8.5 hours on its USB-rechargeable lithium-ion battery. There’s also signs of a red version of Beats’ Mixr headphones coming at the same time. HMV has publicly scoured its pages of any trace of a ship date or price for the Pill, but cached copies point to a £170 ($276) price and a release around September 28th — not necessarily trustworthy figures, but they may be in the ballpark. Our only question is whether or not we’ll get a dose of the Pill in the US.

[Thanks, Germaine]

LG Optimus L9 saunters through FCC, asks for a Martini

LG Optimus L9 saunters through FCC, asks for martini afterward

LG’s latest L-series smartphone, the Optimus L9, has just breezed (elegantly) through the FCC’s radio frequency trial-by-screwdriver. The dinner-jacket-white clad Android smartphone is part of the “L-Style design philosophy” from the Korean maker, which emphasizes budget panache over brute performance. As such, it’s a handsome but plasticky device, with a 4.7-inch IPS screen, ICS, qtranslator language app, dual-core 1GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, 2,150mAh battery and 5-megapixel shooter. Vodafone in Europe showed the price as €340 unsubsidized or €50 on contract, but a member of the L-series family has yet to cross the pond. However, a surprise peek of its Optimus L7 sibling as US Cellular’s upcoming Splendor shows there’s some hope for a stateside cameo.

Huawei’s MediaPad7 Lite clears FCC, will soon trek to Europe

Huawei Media pad

Now that Huawei has shepherded its MediaPad 7 Lite through the FCCs corridors to ensure its WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and HSPDA 3G radios all conform, the tab is set to travel. The 7-incher wields a 1024 x 600 IPS display, 1.2GHz Cortex A8 processor, 8GB of storage (32GB with optional microSD), 1GB of RAM, 4,100mAh battery and 3.2 / .3-megapixel back / front cameras. Huawei said it would ship across Asia and Eastern Europe to start with, then land in Germany by October with a price of 249 euros ($315). The slate might have a tough row to hoe against similar competition, considering its tame processor, but maybe that newly stamped cellular radio will tip the balance for road warriors.

HTC One X+ hits the FCC

Look at what we have here, ladies and gentlemen – the HTC One X+ which has arrived at the FCC, along the way revealing most of its glory underneath the hood. We are looking at a quad-core Tegra 3 processor here alongside the NVIDIA Tegra 3 (PM63100) chipset in tow. Not only that, this particular visit to the FCC did reveal support for AT&T’s LTE bands, translating to a shameless fact that you ought to take note of – it will arrive on AT&T’s shelves, and hopefully soon, too, as that is more often than not the path that most devices take after being sent to the FCC for inspection.

We are looking at the very real possibility of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean shipping with the HTC One X+ right out of the box, although having a 1800mAh battery might seem to make it rather underpowered compared to its peers, in addition to having just 1GB RAM (while this is the norm, the Galaxy S3 in the US carries double that amount). Still, will you be picking up HTC’s newest flagship when it finally arrives?

Sony’s NEX-6 satisfies the FCC with paperwork, guts

Sony's NEX-6 satisfies the FCC with paperwork, guts

Still hungry for a closer look at Sony’s WiFi-packing NEX-6 despite perusing our hands-on? Apparently the FCC feels the same, so it’s used its government-granted authority to inspect the camera first-hand, and tear it apart in the process. This isn’t the only time the 16.1-megapixel shooter has been given the ruler treatment, but a full copy of its user’s manual has notably come along for its US visit. Check out the gallery below to view this NEX’s guts, or hit the source link to gloss over a PDF of the instruction manual — might as well get the boring stuff done before the package arrives in November.

HTC One X+ with Tegra 3 makes appearance at FCC, boasts AT&T LTE

HTC One X makes appearance at FCC

In contrast to the Sony Xperia T, HTC’s latest device just hit the FCC without offering many details — but fortunately we have a pretty good idea of what it is anyway. Identified as the PM63100, we’ve seen this particular model show up on benchmark results as the HTC One X+, a rumored revision of the current flagship. As you may recall, the benchmark claims that the One X+ features a Tegra 3 quad-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz. Happily, the FCC-approved phone also throws in LTE connectivity (sporting AT&T-friendly bands 4 and 17 in addition to 2 and 5), fulfilling NVIDIA’s self-made prophecy that we would see Tegra 3 devices with the next-gen tech by the end of 2012. Sadly, the federal docs don’t show us much more than what you see above, but it’s an indication that we may not have to wait too much longer to learn more.

Sony Xperia T lands at the FCC, lets us peek under the hood

Sony Xperia T lands at the FCC, lets us peek under the hood

There isn’t much mystery left to an FCC-bound phone that’s already been announced and thoroughly handled, but we must admit that Sony does a pretty good job at making the federal approval documents more exciting than most. How? More often than not, the confidentiality request has already been lifted, leaving us with a user manual and a full trove of teardown photos. Such is the case with the Xperia T, announced recently at IFA 2012. Aside from these additional elements, there likely isn’t much for the average gadget-loving American to geek out about — this particular model offers pentaband HSPA+ / UMTS but lacks LTE, which means it’s probably only going to find its way to purple mountains majesty through the efforts of T-Mobile (or importers, worst-case) — we’re still holding out hope for the AT&T-branded version that leaked a few days ago, however. No matter its fate, follow us below for a gallery full of revealing photos.

Motorola XT890 spotted at the FCC, possible Intel-powered RAZR M

Word has it that next week, Motorola and Intel are set to unveil an Intel-powered Motorola Android device, or basically the Intel-powered RAZR M. While that has yet to be confirmed, a recent FCC filing seems to have suggested that is indeed the case. Dubbed the XT890, details of the device were a bit scarce other than its internationally compatible radio bands and the diagram pictured above. Assuming the rumors are to be believed, the Intel version of the RAZR M is expected to be powered by Intel’s Atom (Medfield) processor clocked at a whopping 2GHz along with a display resolution of 897×540. In any case we expect the details to be revealed next week during Motorola’s event, so stay tuned for the updates! In the meantime for those who are inclined, you can pop on over to the FCC for additional information.

Motorola XT890 approved by FCC, may be next week’s 2GHz Intel phone

Motorola XT890 approved by FCC, may be next week's 2GHz Intel phone

As one major event wraps, we look forward to what’s coming up next: Motorola’s Intel announcement. We have a hard time believing we’d see anything besides a smartphone with an Intel chip inside, but the biggest mystery is in what type of phone. Are we going to see something ho-hum, or mind-blowingly awesome? Whatever it is, we think we may have stumbled upon a clue. Motorola’s XT890, which has been rumored to be a global RAZR M with a 2GHz CPU and 897 x 540 screen resolution, just wandered through the FCC with AT&T-friendly 2G and 3G radios. There’s no hint of LTE here, though the FCC doesn’t require OEMs to mention non-US frequencies. The docs, however, indicate that we can expect dual-band WiFi — no word on NFC, but we’d be very surprised if it didn’t make the final cut. The supercharged processor seems almost too good to be true, but we wouldn’t offer up any complaints if there is any truth to the idea.
