European automobile maker Fiat has teamed up with appliance company Smeg to create some awesome retro refrigerators out of old cars. They’re basically finding classic Fiat 500s, cutting off the front ends, gutting the insides, and turning them into the coolest fridges ever.
It’s sad that all these cars are being chopped up, but the resulting refrigerators look pretty darn cute, so it is hard to be too mad at them. The instrument panel is still inside, though it’s not exactly where you’d expect to find it. You can use it to adjust the temperature.
The “Smeg 500s” are coming soon and will be available in white, red and green. We don’t have any word on pricing, but I’m sure they won’t be cheap. Who wants one?

Posted in: Today's ChiliEach week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.
It’s been an exciting week for green building as Inhabitat reported that some of the world’s top architects unveiled plans for high-tech developments with light environmental footprints. Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) won an international design competition for Europa, a new green-roofed city outside of Paris. Construction began last week on a new solar-powered stadium for the Euro 2016 football championship designed by Herzog & de Meuron. San Francisco celebrated the reopening of the Exploratorium this week in a new net-zero building along the city’s waterfront. In Mexico City, a helipad on the roof of an office building was converted into a co-working space with a gorgeous rooftop garden. And we also profiled the Ekinoid, a spherical, self-sufficient home that sits on stilts and is built to withstand disaster.

Fiat-Chrysler CEO says governments shouldn’t ‘strong arm’ automakers into producing electric vehicles
Posted in: Today's ChiliFiat may now be producing electric vehicles, but CEO Sergio Marchionne apparently doesn’t think they represent the future for the automaker just yet — or, at least, the only future. Speaking at the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit yesterday, Marchionne said that his company is losing $10,000 on every 500e car sold (a figure he first offered fully two years ago), and added that “doing that on a large scale would be masochism in its extreme.” Those comments came as part of a larger point he was making about the push towards electric vehicles, and what he described as “strong arm” tactics from governments promoting EVs over other alternatives. Instead of “rushing into embracing EVs as the only technological solution,” he says, “government can help drive best results by remaining technology neutral.” As for what Chrysler itself is looking at beyond EVs, Marchionne pointed to traditional engine improvements and alternative fuels like natural gas, which he says is the “cleanest alternative available in terms of emissions.”

When it comes to electronic rides, you know for sure that electric powered cars are the way to go where the future is concerned, as it cuts down on most of the environmental problems where burning fossil fuels are concerned, not to mention being a whole lot more quiet and efficient on the road. The thing is, do not expect high performance electric cars to be readily available to the masses at a relatively low price if you want to get your adrenaline pumping, and there is also the issue of range. Folks living in California will have the 2013 Fiat 500e to look forward to later this summer.
There are several incentives in place to help persuade potential California buyers pick up this particular green ride, including a $199 36-month lease that will require you to drop a mere $999 when signing. This will be similar to the lease program offered for the Fiat 500 Pop that runs on gas instead. Overall, the Fiat 500e will cost $32,500, but the final sticker price might eventually fall to a mere $20,500 for California residents thanks to a combination of federal, state and local tax credits in addition to Fiat rebates, now how about that?

The Fiat 500e will be sold exclusively in California for the price-tag of $32,500 MSRP. The first deliveries of this car are expected to occur this summer. You will be able to purchase a Fiat 500e at the starting price of $32,500, however, for those that are eligible for federal credits, state incentives, and FIAT rebates, you will be able to purchase this vehicle for as low as $20,500. You will also be able to lease the 500e for a down payment of $999 and monthly payments of $199 a month for 36 months.
The Fiat 500e has an EPA-certified range of 87 miles when it is fully charged, which Fiat claims is “best-in-class and better than all U.S.-market all-electric vehicles produced by high-volume manufacturers.” It also has an estimated 108 MPGe. There will be 25 dealerships all across California that will sell the 500e, and each will offer 4 charging stations that 500e owners can use. The dealerships will also help customers find other charging points, as well as offer locations of other charging stations on the customer’s route.
Fiat will offer its customers the “Fiat 500e Pass Program”, which allows 500e owners to choose an alternative car to use for up to 12 days each year. The owners will be able to choose from select cars offered by Enterprise Holdings, including the Fiat 500s, the Dodge Dart, the Chrysler 200, or bigger vehicles like a minivan or a pickup truck. The Fiat 500e Pass Program is only available for the first 3 years after you purchase your 500e.
There is also a smartphone app available for 500e owners. The app is available for both the iPhone and Android phones. It will provide you with details like real-time vehicle status and charge management, and will also allow you to track energy use, locate charging stations, prep routes, set up alerts, and more. The 500e itself has a 111hp/83kW electric motor that is able to deliver 147 lbs-feet of torque and is powered by a 24 kWh lithium battery. It is able to be charged in under 4 hours with 240 volts. The Fiat 500e is expected to be a huge hit in California.

TomTom partners with Fiat and Toyota to deliver in-dash navigation, traffic (update: Mercedes, too)
Posted in: Today's ChiliIf you’re a GPS company, one way to keep the smartphone feature creep at bay is to strike deals with car manufacturers, and bake your wares into their vehicles. TomTom has done particularly good securing these partnerships and Fiat is just the latest company to sign on the dotted line. Its navigation software will be built into the Uconnect Radio Nav systems found in the 500L series from the Italian car marker. It will eventually roll out to other vehicles and Fiat brands, but there was no timeline given. TomTom also inked a deal with Toyota’s European arm to put TomTom HD Traffic in any vehicle packing a Touch&GO in-dash device. For more, check out the PR after the break.
Update: TomTom announced that it’ll also be doling out traffic info to select Mercedes-Benz vehicles in 12 European countries via HD Traffic, which will be baked into the luxury car-makers COMAND nav system.

Fiat and Mazda have officially inked the deal which will refettle the MX-5 (aka the Miata) as Alfa Romeo’s next open-top sports car, expected to hit showrooms in 2015. The agreement [pdf link] was first mooted back in May 2012, and will see the as-yet-unnamed Alfa Romeo droptop eventually go on sale globally; meanwhile, Mazda will also offer its own version of the car, the next-gen MX-5.
Although the two cars “will be based on the architecture” of Mazda’s new Miata model, there will be some key differences in what ends up on sale. Beyond the differentiated styling – unconfirmed, though we’re hoping Alfa Romeo doesn’t stray too far from the delectable 2010 2uettottanta concept by Pininfarina, shown here, although we wouldn’t argue with a convertible version of last year’s Disco Volante concept either – each marque will slot in their choice of engine.
Both versions will be produced at Mazda’s Hiroshima plant in Japan, and feature rear-wheel drive and two seats. For the Japanese firm, it’s a chance to squeeze as much value as possible out of its new design and manufacturing investment, vital if the compact droptop is to be financially viable.
For Fiat, meanwhile, Alfa Romeo has been struggling for some time, and the deal means producing “a modern interpretation of the classic Alfa Romeo roadster” needn’t be quite so impractical. Initial plans to reintroduce the brand to the US market later this year have been delayed, however, with the Alfa Romeo 4C now not expected to debut in North America until sometime in 2014.
