Firebug 1.5 Web Development Tool for Firefox Released

This article was written on January 20, 2010 by CyberNet.

Firebug is well known to web developers as one of the best tools to have at your side when trying to debug website issues. Many have said that it’s a priceless tool, and at one point Joe Hewitt wasn’t sure if it would remain free. He questioned whether users would be willing to shell out $15-$25 for an extension, but he strayed from the paid route in favor of keeping it open source.

Here we sit just days after the 4-year mark of the first public release, and this incredible extension has been downloaded well over 21 million times and has roughly 2.5 million people who start up a version of Firefox that is Firebug-equipped. With nearly 800 reviews this extension has an average 5-star rating, which is an incredible accomplishment no matter how you spin it.

The cherry on top is that Firebug 1.5 was released yesterday after about 6-months of development time. The release notes for this version are quite extensive, and you’ll quickly see that the update touches on just about every area that the extension covers. One of the more important things may be that Firebug 1.5 includes support for Firefox 3.6 that should be available sometime soon (possibly this week from what I’ve read). Here’s a quick rundown on the areas that have been improved upon:

  • Mike Radcliffe’s Inspector. A key feature, now solid as a rock
  • Jan ‘Honza’ Odvarko’s expanded and refined Net panel, with accurate timings
  • Steve Roussey’s reworking of HTML editing and entity support
  • Kevin Decker’s CSS and Style side panel improvements
  • Support for dynamic, graphical breakpoints through out Firebug
  • Tested support for the soon-to-be-released Firefox 3.6

If you use the add-on stop by and leave a quick review. It never hurts to say thanks for developing such an extensive and free add-on.

Personas Offers Better Firefox Skinning

This article was written on December 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

Firefox Personas One of the things that the Opera browser does way better than Firefox is skinning. In Opera you can go to their skin site, find a theme that you want to install, and preview it immediately in the browser. No restart is required.

Mozilla looks as though they are experimenting with a similar method via an extension called Personas. With Personas you’ll be able to perform basic skinning operations in Firefox without ever needing to restart the browser.

All of the goodness happens in the bottom-left corner of the Status Bar. That’s where a little icon will appear once you’ve installed the extension, and clicking on that icon will immediately present a list of themes that can be chosen. They’re organized according to the most popular, newest ones, and also broken up into categories. As of right now there are a few dozen different themes available for Personas users.

It’s important to note that these themes are not the same as the ones you download from Mozilla’s add-on site. The Personas themes do not skin any of the buttons or the Control Panel area, and the only changes you’ll really see is a new background image behind the Menus, Address Bar, Bookmarks, Tabs, and Status Bar. Despite being such a basic skinning alternative I did find that the themes give Firefox a refreshing appearance.

Now one can only hope that this will result in full skinning capabilities down the road, and that they’ll apply a similar technology to extension installation. Maybe Mozilla will be able to make restarting the browser a thing of the past!

How To Make Phone Calls Using Firefox

This article was written on January 25, 2006 by CyberNet.

How To Make Phone Calls Using Firefox

If you are a VoIP user and a Firefox user, then you may see a lot of possibilities with this. A company called Zoep has released an extension for Firefox 1.5 that allows users to call other Zoep users. Also, if you like to call landline phones then you can do so by pre-paying for your calls. Another bright side to this extension is the ability to talk to people that use Jabber clients like Google Talk.

CyberNotes: What Are Your Favorite Firefox Extensions

This article was written on October 25, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Web Browser Wednesday

Over time I have had countless encounters with people who ask what Firefox extensions that I use, whether it be people from this site or simply friends that I am trying to convince to start using Firefox. I love telling people what I use but I am also curious what other Firefox users have installed.

I actually have separate Firefox profiles based upon the task that I am currently doing. For example, I have a web development profile that has extensions installed that I use only when I am creating or modifying websites. However, there is one profile that I consider to be my primary one which is what I use the most.

Firefox 2 was officially released yesterday and I am pleased to say that all of the extensions that I use in my primary Firefox profile have been made compatible. Most of them were updated when Firefox 2 was still in the Beta stage but there were still a few stragglers that were just updated in the last week or so.

To make it easy to share the extensions that others and myself use I decided to use Zoho’s poll system. It allows me to embed the poll within my site and also allows me to add more extensions as users point them out. So if have an extension that you would like added to the list then just leave a comment and I’ll go ahead and add it.

You can vote directly on the form below by selecting how many stars you think the extension deserves OR you can view a full-screen version of the poll here. Each extension is also hyperlinked to the homepage for those people who want to download them.

What Would Happen If Microsoft Owned Firefox?

This article was written on October 26, 2006 by CyberNet.

Microsoft Firefox It has crossed all of our minds at one point or another but this is a more official idea on what would happen if Microsoft owned Firefox. In fact, there is a website dedicated to it:  MSFirefox.com.

Every application has some minimum requirements and this one wouldn’t be an exception:

  • A Credit Card
  • Microsoft(R) Windows(TM)/Vista Operating System
  • Microsoft(R) Mouse & Keyboard (Hyperlinks will NOT work without these)
  • Live(TM) Messenger (Required API to maintain dangerous CPU temperatures)
  • Microsoft(R) Office 2007 (Provides the ability to scroll webpages)
  • Quad Core Processor (For loading Hotmail.com)
  • Any SLI Configured Graphics Card > 512mb (TO Display High Definition GIF Images)
  • 1024 MB of RAM (Compensation for Frequent Memory Leaks)
  • 483MB Disk Space

What kind of features does it have?

  • Enjoy a Better Web Experience
MS Firefox 2007 delivers a dramatic boost in the download speeds of online pornography. By utilising a proprietary dynamic algorithm – anything that remotely resembles a tit or a boob will download up to 10 times faster. Fun at the speed of light!
  • Stay Secure on the Web
Firefox 2007′s new TakeOver(TM) technology protects the Windows Kernel by automatically recognizing all McAfee and Symantec programs as viruses. Downloading has never been safer.
  • Interactive Multimedia
Microsoft’s AKobe Phlash(TM) Plugin delivers awesome online interactive content; anything from music, videos to games. (Lawsuit from Adobe pending)
  • Personalize Your Browser
Choose from three excellent browsing styles! Minimized, Maximized and Fullscreen!

And there are of course a few bugs that for some reason just can’t be squashed. Visiting the following sites using MS Firefox 2007 will cause your computer to shut down unexpectedly:

  • Any sites with the phrase: microsoft/windows/explorer/vista/bill sucks

Ahh, that was definitely a good laugh for today. At the bottom of the site it gives a donation link that takes you to Mozilla’s donation location. However, the disappointing thing was that the actual download links for the browser are for IE 7! Come on, I would have thought for sure Firefox 2 would be on there.

Download Firefox 2 – Just Released

This article was written on October 23, 2006 by CyberNet.

Firefox 2

Internet Explorer 7 was just released late last week and now Mozilla Firefox 2 is here! It was just placed in the releases folder on the FTP so it is time for you to come and get it!

Like always the downloader that I have put together below uses Mozilla’s load balancing so that one specific FTP server does not get all of the hits.

Firefox 2 is expected to be made officially available tomorrow according to Mozilla’s Asa Dotzler:

Lots of folks have been sending me emails asking if the Tuesday release reported at various places is accurate. Yes. Unless something unexpected happens, we’ll be shipping Firefox 2 on Tuesday.

From the looks of it everything has gone smoothly and it should be officially announced tomorrow…even though they typically announce it the same day that it hits the FTP. So don’t be surprised if some kind of announcement comes tonight around 5PM-7PM PDT.

When browsing through some of the links on the Firefox site I also noticed that they have started to update some of their screenshots with Firefox 2 builds. The one page that has definitely been refreshed is the Getting Started which couldn’t make it any more obvious. I can’t wait to see everything switch over and I wonder if there will be any kind of facelift to the site?

Robots Invade Firefox 3… World Domination Next

This article was written on April 08, 2008 by CyberNet.

The robots have begun to invade the world, starting with Firefox 3! That’s right, the next-generation browser may not be what we were expecting all along. They are trying to pose as friendly inhabitants of the browser, but don’t get sucked into their evil spell. It’s too late for me, but save yourselves by switching to Internet Explorer!

Okay, maybe that’s a bit over-the-top, but the robots have definitely found a home in the latest Firefox 3 Beta 5. As James pointed out via a comment all you have to do is type about:robots into your address bar and press Enter. You should see this message:

Gort! Klaatu barada nikto!

Welcome Humans!

We have come to visit you in peace and with goodwill!

  • Robots may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  • Robots have seen things you people wouldn’t believe.
  • Robots are Your Plastic Pal Who’s Fun To Be With.
  • Robots have shiny metal posteriors which should not be bitten.

And they have a plan.

Here’s a screenshot of the message you’re presented with.

firefox 3 about robots

You’ll notice that the title of the page is “Gort! Klaatu barada nikto!” What does it mean? It’s from the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still released in 1951, where that particular message was meant to stop the robot Gort from destroying Earth [via Wikipedia].

What’s even better is that clicking the “Try Again” button will just replace it with another button that says “Please do not press this button again.” Naturally you’ll want to click it again, and then it will just disappear.

Note: This Easter Egg is only available in Firefox 3 Beta 5 and beyond.

Get Opera’s Fast Forward And Rewind Buttons For Firefox

This article was written on October 17, 2006 by CyberNet.

Fast Forward/ Rewind Opera Firefox Buttons Opera is a really great browser with a lot of unique features. One of those features that I always missed when using Firefox can now be replaced by an extension. The feature that I am talking about are the Fast Forward and Rewind buttons that you’ll find on Opera’s toolbar.

Many people never realize what those buttons are for and typically remove them to reduce clutter. Little do they realize how useful they are. The buttons will link themselves to a “Next” or “Previous” page to the site that you are currently visiting if there is one available. The most common use of this would definitely be on search engines where they typically offer multiple pages of search results.

For me this comes in handy the most when I am shuffling through the Google Images looking for a certain picture. I just keep my finger on the Fast Forward button and keep clicking it until I see a picture that I want on the page. I no longer have to keep scrolling to the bottom to click on the “Next” link.

The Rewind/Fastforward Buttons extension adds this feature to Firefox and it has recently been updated to match the new theme that is in Firefox 2. This is probably one of my new favorite extensions. 🙂

Mozilla Firefox 2 RC1 Released – Portable Version Available

This article was written on September 26, 2006 by CyberNet.

Mozilla has put the Firefox 2 RC1 files up on their FTP and their download page says that they will have all of the links up by 3PM PDT. However, with the last release of Firefox I put together the nice drop-down menu downloader and it uses the exact same links that they will be providing on that page (which means these links share the load between servers instead of linking directly to one FTP location).

Just select your language from the drop-down menu and then press the operating system button for the OS that you would like:

If you have been unaware of RC1 there have been some great visual changes going on since Firefox 2 Beta 2 was released. The navigation buttons have gotten yet another facelift and the tabs actually seem to fit in now.

There is also a portable version of the RC1 to make it a little easier to try. All you have to do is download the Firefox Portable file. Then you unzip the file and browse for the file FirefoxPortable.exe. Just execute that file and you will be running Firefox 2 RC1! The profile is kept with the FirefoxPortable folder so you don’t have to worry about messing up your other profile and the uninstallation process is simple…just delete the folder!
