Nikon releases D4 firmware 1.02 with minor display, formatting, network stability improvements in tow

Have you managed to get your hands on Nikon’s elusive D4 full-frame DSLR? It should be smooth sailing from here, with the occasional firmware update being your only critical acquisition going forward. D4 firmware 1.02 brings a handful of minor fixes, but if you’re in need of any of the enhancements listed below, it’s surely a must have:

  • Format memory card can now be added to My Menu.
  • Gamut for Adobe RGB images displayed in the camera’s monitor has now been changed. This enables more vivid display of images.
  • The stability of network connections when the FTP upload option is selected has been increased.
  • When recording movies using a lens with an aperture ring in [P] or [S] exposure mode, and Aperture ring selected for Custom Setting f10: Customize command dials>Aperture setting, the minimum aperture was applied. This issue has been resolved.
  • When a still image captured during movie recording with 1920 ×1080; 30 fps; crop, 1920 × 1080; 25 fps; crop, or 1920 × 1080; 24 fps; crop selected for Movie settings>Frame size/frame rate and Live frame grab selected for Custom Setting g4: Assign shutter button was displayed in Capture NX 2 or ViewNX 2, the position of the focus point displayed differed from actual recording position. This issue has been resolved.
  • An issue that caused the camera to freeze when attempting to format a memory card (setup menu > Format memory card) while the camera was connected to a network in HTTP server mode has been resolved.

Nokia N9 updated to MeeGo PR13, boasts 1,000 improvements

MeeGo isn’t quite dead, and Nokia N9 users are getting another update pushed to their phone to prove it. PR1.3, a firmware refresh that’s been in the works at least since 1.2 was released a few months ago, has finally been made official. But this is no simple bug fix — the latest version of MeeGo offers an impressive 1,000 “quality improvements, including mail, Facebook and Twitter.” According to Nokia’s official support page, the update will also provide several network and connectivity enhancements. The 203MB OTA download is now beginning to roll out, starting with unbranded devices and branching out from there. Continue past the break for the full statement from Nokia.

Update: We’ll give a hat tip out to our commenters, who clued us in on a forum thread that discusses many of these “quality improvements.” It appears that a large number of them are indeed bug fixes. Some of the actual boosts involve camera feature enhancements, higher volume, NFC fixes, better video decoding and more precise copy and paste [thanks BertrandsBox!] We also initially experienced sluggish behavior on the new update, but a factory reset seemed to resolve the concern.

Canon EOS 7D gets new firmware update

Canon has just announced that they have introduced a spanking new firmware update for their Canon EOS 7D DSLR, where it will introduce new functionality that helps improve the EOS 7D’s performance for serious photographers and semi-professional users. This will be a free update, so fret not about forking out more money for your new hobby. Some of the improvements include an increase in the maximum number of burst images taken in the RAW file format that bumps it up to 25ii frames from 15i frames, in addition to the ability to process RAW image files in the camera itself, not to mention having the option to set a maximum ISO setting in ISO Auto mode. Android 41 Jelly Bean preview download is live, probably won't work on your Galaxy Nexus yet

Google has opted to deliver Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as an OTA update to the ICS already on the Nexus phones and tablets it just handed everyone at I/O 2012, and there’s a manual download link available too. As Android Police notes, only GSM phones running the IMM330D firmware will take the update (which you probably don’t have, although a fresh phone from the initial Google Play run might work.) With this release already in the wild it’s surely only a matter of time before various third parties open it up to a wider variety of hardware. As always with early and somewhat untested software YMMV, keep an eye on those XDA Developers threads for the latest updates.

Update: Just that quickly, an SDK port has already popped up for the HTC One X. Of course, it’s described as unstable and the author has no plans to try to fix the numerous problems but if you’re desperate to see Jelly Bean you can, you just probably shouldn’t.

PSA PS3 firmware update landing todaySony’s third-generation console is primed for new firmware, set to arrive later today and looking to be an audio-centric refresh. Version 4.20 improves support for Sony’s PlayStation 3 Wireless Stereo Headset, which had some troubles with the last update. You can now turn off the option to hear your own voice ringing through your head, or pick from five different volume levels. There’s also a new option to add virtual surround sound on Blu-ray and DVD playback to the ear-warmers, as well adjustments to how long the whole system will run before shutting itself down and the ability to save files in bulk. Sony PS3 firmware 4.20 heading out tomorrow

If you try to sign into the PlayStation Network tomorrow from your PS3, chances are you’ll be asked to download a firmware update before you’re allowed to access any other online content. Sony has announced that it will be pushing out a new system update for the console, bringing the firmware to version 4.20. The update will optimize performance as always, in addition to adding new functionality and features.

The headline part of the update is improved performance for the newly launched Wireless Stereo Headset. The version 4.20 update gives the peripheral “virtual surround sound” quality for playback of Blu-ray and DVD movies. It also improves sidetone audio performance with the ability to choose from five different microphone audio settings. Sidetone refers to when you hear your own voice during online gameplay.

The new PS3 update also adds new settings for automatically turning the system off when it Video/TV/Music/Photo mode, as well as Game/Other Features mode. Managing save files has also been enhanced with the ability to select multiple items and delete or copy en masse. Sony has been known to sneak other content – like anti-piracy measures – into firmware updates without announcing them, but the above is what the company has publicly disclosed.
