Canon 5D Mark III firmware update enables improved AF, uncompressed HDMI output

Canon 5D Mark III firmware update enables improved autofocus, uncompressed HDMI output

If your camera arsenal includes a 5D Mark III, prepare to get your download on. Earlier today, Canon released a major firmware update for the hit DSLR — version 1.2.1 enables clean, uncompressed HDMI output with simultaneous LCD display and recording to CF or SD cards, along with cross-type autofocus for apertures as small as f/8, bringing that aspect of AF capability in line with the EOS-1D X. You’ll be able to take advantage of improved autofocus performance even when using an f/5.6 lens with a 1.4x extender, or an f/4 lens with a 2x extender. On the video front, version 1.2.1 will let you boot an uncompressed YCbCr 4:2:2 feed to an external recorder, enabling your pick of codecs and frame rates, while also eliminating arbitrary limits on record time. The free download, available for recent versions of Mac OS and Windows, is yours for the taking at the source link below.

Netgear boosts 802.11ac WiFi performance with Beamforming+ firmware upgrade

On Monday, Netgear added support for Beamforming+ to its R6300 802.11ac Dual Band Gigabit router, as well as its A6200 USB adapter, offering users better wireless Internet performance and reliability. For those who already have one (or both) of the devices, a firmware update has also been rolled out that adds Beamforming+ support to the devices. With the added support, users will see their 802.11ac gain additional speed, among other things.

A6200

Beamforming+ is a signal optimizer that pinpoints a Wi-Fi device’s location and sends the wireless Internet signal its way, keeping tabs on where the device is at. In addition, the signal is amplified via adjustements, both of which combine to offer increased reliability and performance. As a result, users will see their download speeds increase, and will find some activities that have had issues don’t anymore, such as talking over VoIP or watching a high-definition video.

“802.11ac is the wireless standard you need to support the increasingly heavy demands on your network for voice, video and data … Our test data demonstrates that when we enable Beamforming+ on our R6300 WiFi Router, we see performance increase by 60 percent at a distance of around 50 feet when connecting to an 802.11ac device.”

Those who have the R6300 router or A6200 adapter can download the firmware upgrade now from Netgear’s Support site. Other 802.11ac users who want to take advantage of Beamforming+ are going to have to wait a bit longer, however. Netgear says it anticipates have a firmware upgrade for the rest of its 802.11ac routers available in “early summer,” though it doesn’t specify a date, and phrases it in such a way that the date may change.

OUYA firmware update lets gamers change their payment info

OUYA update lets gamers change their payment info

OUYA vowed a steady stream of updates to its inaugural console on the road to a June retail launch, and it just released one of the more important examples. Among other fixes, the inconspicuously titled 1.0.193 firmware upgrade lets customers change their credit card info after they’ve created an account — rather vital to anyone who has to swap cards in the wake of identity theft, or who just wants to gift an account to a friend. While few owners beyond the earliest adopters will fully appreciate the change, it’s good to know that there shouldn’t be a payment panic when OUYA units arrive in force.

Pebble rolls out firmware update version 1.10, adds support for third-party watchfaces

Pebble has rolled out version 1.5 of PebbleOS for its popular smartwatch. Users should be seeing the firmware update via the Pebble app, but are advised in the announcement that force quitting the app and then restarting it may be necessary. If that fails, the app may need to be deleted and reinstalled, but the hassle is worth it in the end, with the new version bringing a lot of fixes, improvements, and features.

Pebble

One of the biggest new features is support for third-party watchfaces created with the watchface SDK, opening users up to a wide range of creations. Then there are some improvements, including a battery indicator that has better responsiveness and accuracy, as well as tweaks to system apps to reduce their drain on the battery and to speed up their response rate.

A couple disable options have been added for turning off the vibrating motor that activates for notifications, as well as turning off backlight activiation via the accelerometer. Factory reset has been tweaked so that it wipes watchfaces and apps that aren’t part of the system. In addition, there are a couple changes with how it interacts with iOS – specifically, less “Allow Peble to communicate…” pop-ups and a fix for the battery life problem.

Finally, rounding out the update are a variety of bug fixes, including solutions to the crash that happens when sending a subjectless email on iOS over MAP, the crash that hits the music app when Bluetooth is shut off and tracks are changed too fast, poorly rendered non-fullscreen apps, multiple vibrations modes being kicked off at once, and a fix to the edge-case that impaired proper iOS connection.

PebbleOS 1.10 supports third-party watch faces, sorts out iOS issues

Pebble OS 11 supports thirdparty watch faces, sorts out iOS issues

Pebble has been on a rapid cadence with smartwatch updates to justify those crowdfunded dollars, and it’s not letting up just because watch shipments are well underway. PebbleOS 1.10 has arrived with support for custom watch faces built using the matching (and newly available) SDK. The revamp will be especially helpful for iOS users — we see several fixes for crashes, permissions and power in store. Everyone gets options to disable backlighting and vibrations in certain conditions, too. As such, there’s every reason to fire up the Pebble app for an upgrade, even if it’s just for some visual variety.

Nokia Lumia 620 Firmware Gets Global Rollout

Nokia Lumia 620 Firmware Gets Global RolloutThere has been some talk surrounding the 1308 firmware which arrived in Europe recently, targeting the Nokia Lumia 920 mostly, but do bear in mind that the Nokia Lumia 620 is also a part of that particular update, and it seems that a global rollout has already happened as the Internet has been abuzz with word from owners of the Lumia 620 that they have begun to receive this 1308 firmware update Over The Air (OTA).

How did we come to the conclusion that this is a global rollout? For starters, we have received word from Germany all the way to India and even Malaysia, where Lumia 620 owners have reported that they are receiving the firmware patch that is touted to improve overall performance. Among the other fixes on the Lumia 620 include better touch screen functions, corrections in multi-touch actions, improved voice quality with Bluetooth headsets, enhanced camera performance, and a more stable system among others.

PlayStation Vita’s firmware update 2.10 adding folders, enhanced video playback

PlayStation Vita's firmware update 210 adding folders, enhanced video playback

Tired of all those messy icons cluttering up your PlayStation Vita’s home screen? Sony’s providing a solution in its next update, firmware version 2.10, which enables folders of up to 10 items to be organized on the screen. That means you could potentially take those 100 max applications allowed and stuff them all into folders on the home screen, effectively condensing your various home screens from 10 to one. The rest of the update isn’t so thrilling — namely, being able to identify which memory card you’ve got in the device, some email app enhancements, and video support which “allows you to play video within the browser.” There’re a few more minor tweaks, which we’ve included in the list past the jump — a complete list of updates in gritty detail will show up here when the update goes live at some point “later this evening.”

Nokia Lumia 920 Firmware Update Runs Into Plenty Of Issues

Nokia Lumia 920 Firmware Update Runs Into Plenty Of IssuesLife is not all a bed of roses for some folks, and the same adage too, can be applied to the world of smartphones. Having picked up the latest firmware update at the end of last month, the Nokia Lumia 920 has since seen handsets on the AT&T network run into firmware update issues, and folks who lived across the pond, too, managed to enjoy the Lumia 920 firmware 1308 update sometime last week as well.

There seems to be a rather major issue when it comes to connectivity, and this particular problem – an important one considering how data hungry we all are these days, will show up in a variety of ways, ranging from missed to dropped calls, in addition to being just plain slow where data speeds are concerned. In a nutshell, the whole lot of Lumia 920 owners who have updated their respective handsets to the latest firmware update have been disappointed, and at least Nokia is aware of the issues, and are working to resolve it as soon as possible, even taking the trouble to stop distributing 1308 to AT&T users.
