With its new Vívofit fitness tracker, Garmin’s entering a market that’s getting more and more crowded every day. But while other fitness bands allow motivated athletic types to set daily goals and strive to improve themselves, the Vívofit seems to cater to those of us who need a lot more encouragement to get off the couch, or leave our desks to take a quick walk around the block. And that’s a good thing.

[CES 2014] 2014 is upon us and we’re sure many of you guys have good intentions for the year and have probably created resolutions such as getting more exercise. That’s easier said than done, especially if you’re busy and travel a lot, but that’s the exact problem that Tao is hoping to tackle with the WellShell, a mouse-shaped device (pictured above) that allows the user to basically exercise wherever and whenever they want! Stuck in the office all night? No problem! Stuck in a 20 hour flight? Done! Stuck in a traffic jam? Sure, why not (although highly unrecommended!).
Basically how the WellShell allows you to work out is through isometric exercising, which is by applying pressure which is said to improve strength, muscle tone, and even circulation. Available with an accompanying app that is compatible with both iOS and Android devices, all the user has to do is hold the device in their hands, knees, thighs, follow the instructions on the app, and just push! Other features of the WellShell include the ability to track other biometrics, such as calorie intake, steps taken, heart rate, and more. We can’t speak for its effectiveness but it does sound like an intriguing product. Pricing was not mentioned but the Tao WellShell is expected to be available later this fall.

Raise your hand if you kept all of your New Year’s resolutions in 2013. Good, okay, now only raise your hand if you weren’t lying just now. Ahh, nice to see both of you. We always start the new year with the best intentions but, man, old habits die hard. Let’s see if we can do better this year. Here are five tips that might just help.

It is amazing the extremes that some people will go to to lose weight. Over the years people have tried wiring their mouths shut, having liposuction, taking sometimes dangerous combinations of drugs, stomach bypass surgery, and lapband surgery. A new procedure developed over the past few years is starting to raise some eyebrows. It is called a ‘tongue patch." A bit of surgical mesh is sewn onto the tongue to keep people from eating.
More and more contraptions that charge devices or generate power without needing an electrical outlet are hitting the market. Some, like the PULSE Kinetic Jump Rope, are in their prototype stages, while others like the Voltmaker are ready to be shipped off.
Granted, you’ll be able to get a bit of a workout with both devices. Voltmaker will have you turning its hand crank until your arms are sore, while PULSE will have you jump rope until you’re ready to collapse so you can charge up your phone.
The PULSE kinetic jump rope looks like your typical jump rope on the outside, but the built-in dynamos in the handle make all the difference. Every spin the rope makes generates power that is stored in the embedded rechargeable battery. You can then hook your phone up to the jump rope’s handle in order to charge it.
The PULSE jump rope is currently available in a limited beta test run. Only 100 of these have been made, and each one retails for $129(USD).
