12GB flashbased PlayStation 3 on sale in North America, despite Sony's prior claims

In September of last year, Sony threw in an interesting nugget when it shipped the third-generation PS3: there’d be a unique, more affordable 12GB flash-based unit exclusively for Europe and Hong Kong. Sure, it doesn’t do much good for those who boast huge game libraries or prefer to store odds and ends locally, but Sony clearly determined that there’d be a real market for such a product. Sony Computer Entertainment America VP of marketing, handhelds and home consoles John Koller sat down with us following the launches, and made a point to tell us the following:

“The smaller Flash drive isn’t coming to North America, and a lot of that reason is the digital consumer. We really want to make sure, out of the box, that there is an option for them to be able to download that content. That is really critical for us, very very important.”

180s happen quite frequently in the technology world, and it seems that we’re peering at another here. Canada’s own Future Shop has the 12GB PS3 listed right now as “In Stock” for $199.99, and a number of stock trackers are confirming that units are trickling into brick and mortar locations across various provinces. This all jibes nicely with a recent PlayStation Lifestyle rumor that suggests the system is coming to both Canada and the United States on August 18th, leaving us to assume that this particular store simply managed to get a jump on the competition. All that said, you can get a new 500GB PS3 with Grand Theft Auto V for just $70 more (or another, more sizable unit for even less on the secondhand market) — but hey, options!

Update: We’ve received an image (shown after the break) of the 12GB PlayStation 3 in a Kmart stockroom here in the United States. The “do not sell until” date is predictably labeled as August 18th, which means that Yanks should be able to get their hands on one of these without an impromptu road trip up north in just a few days.

[Thanks, Jean-Philippe]

SanDisk Connect arrives for wireless storage and streaming to mobile devices

Wireless storage and streaming solutions have been around for awhile, and most of the big storage companies have out their own version of wireless storage, mostly in the form of a hard drive that you can connect to wirelessly if you’re short on space on your mobile device. However, SanDisk is implementing a different method that includes nothing but a flash drive.

Screen Shot 2013-07-22 at 10.17.17 AM

SanDisk’s new Connect line of devices aims to help you out with transferring files between your computer and mobile device, whether it’d be a smartphone or tablet. There are two products in the Connect line. First, there’s a flash drive that crams in up to 32GB of storage, as well as WiFi and a microSD card slot. Just plug it into your computer and you can transfer files to it. Then, your mobile device can connect directly to the flash drive to obtain the files, or vice versa.

There’s also a larger Roku-sized SanDisk Connect box that comes with a full-size SD card slot and a twice the battery life of the flash drive. However, it only tops out at 32GB, but the added SD card slot can bump that up quite a bit. The box may be a better option for those who want to quickly transfer photos from their camera to their devices quickly and easily.

The only catch is that you’ll have to use SanDisk’s own mobile apps in order to transfer files to and from devices using the flash drive or box. This can either be fine or really bad depending on how easy the app is to use, but seeing as how you’ll be forced to use a specific app, we’re guessing that’s something that users will have to live with.

As for pricing and availability, the flash drive will start at $49 for the 16GB, with the 32GB version costing $59. The larger box will cost $79 and only comes in a 32GB model. The 32GB flash drive seems like the better deal to us, but we’re letting you be the judge of that. SanDisk says that the Connect line will be available sometime next month.

Chess Piece Flash Drive: Savemate

It’s been a while since I featured a product from Brando, and I have to say I’m slightly disappointed with what they recently showed to us. It’s a USB drive shaped like a king chess piece. I know right? A perfectly reasonable, gift ready gadget that doesn’t make you want to bash your head against the wall in confusion? What’s going on at Brando?

chess usb flash drive by brando

The only weird thing about it it’s that Brando calls it a Chess Flash Drive. And it’s not even that weird! They just accidentally a word.

If you’re looking for a gift for a chess fan, get this from Brando. It sells for $16 to $38 (USD) depending on the capacity you want. Meanwhile I’ll be here mourning the end of an era.

3000 Books in One Flash Drive: A Library That Fits in the Palm of Your Hand

I hear parents complaining about how technology distracts kids and how some games and gizmos effectively make their kids dumber. I often tell them that the solution lies in their hands: replace those apparently useless gadgets with more educational stuff that their kids will still enjoy.

If you feel like you’re in the same rut, then you can get started by getting the 3000 Books in One Flash Drive.

3000 Classic Books Flash Drive

It’s literally a library that fits in the palm of your hand. You can take it anywhere and plug it into your laptop or desktop whenever you feel like checking out a book. It saves time and effort from having to make frequent trips to the local library, so you should definitely consider getting one if you’re a huge book worm.

The books include classic renowned titles from Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Oscar Wilde. The 3000 Classic Books flash drive is available online for $29.95(AUD) (~$28 USD). If the cutesy book design or the price tag doesn’t appeal to you, then you could just hit up Project Gutenburg and save the 42,000  titles they have onto your own USB drive for the price of nil.

UFO Robot Grendizer Flash Drive With Saucer Docking Station

I am quite sure that in the history of Coolest Gadgets, you would be hard pressed to find a longer product name in our vast catalog of gizmos covered compared to what we have today – the $44.99 UFO Robot Grendizer Flash Drive With Saucer Docking Station. Even the most hard hearted person at the office was once a kid, so you might want to appeal to his or her childhood moments by getting the UFO Robot Grendizer Flash Drive With Saucer Docking Station. After all, all work and no play makes Jack (or whatever your colleague’s name is) a dull boy, so getting this unique desktop accessory could very well help lighten up the mood at the office.

The UFO Robot Grendizer Flash Drive With Saucer Docking Station will feature everyone’s favorite Super Robot from UFO Robot Grendizer, where it is not only a 4GB USB flash drive in its own right, the robot can be considered as a collectible action figure, sporting limbs that can actually be articulated for different poses, and there is also the infamous UFO saucer that is not just there for cosmetic purposes, but for desktop USB docking as well. There is also a double harken that can be broken into a pair of axe weapons, so let your imagination fly this time around.

Message In A Bottle USB Flash Drive

If you happen to be stranded on an island with nothing but a coconut tree to keep you company (while providing you with shade and plenty of coconuts to help you pass your time), surely you would not mind receiving a message in a bottle as man was not created to be an island on his or her own. Of course, if you happen to have a pencil and a piece of paper, you too, can scribble your very own message, place it in a bottle, and throw it away, wondering who might very well receive it sometime down the road. In this day and age, you might want to take the symbolic route with the £19.99 Message In A Bottle USB Flash Drive.

It is definitely a modern day twist to an age old issue, and it is nice that things have changed a whole lot these days. Of course, it goes without saying that this 4GB USB flash drive in a bottle is not waterproof, so toss it into the ocean at your own risk. Something tells me that the recipient who is stuck on an island would appreciate a handwritten note more than something that is stashed away on a USB flash drive, as chances are there are no power outlets available to power the computer or notebook to read this USB flash drive.

Is There Really a Market for $32,000 Mushroom Flash Drives?

I’ve seen my fair share of incredibly odd devices for computers over the years, but most of the really bizarre stuff is rather cheap. You have to figure that the stranger a device is, the less money it has to cost for people to be interested. That isn’t the case with a company called Shawish that has just unveiled some new USB flash drives that look like mushrooms.

shawish usb mushroom news

First off, I don’t think there are a lot of mushroom enthusiasts out there that have been sitting around counting the days till they could find a fungus-inspired storage device for their computer. Oh, did I mention that these drives cost up to $32,000 each? Yep, these aren’t any old mushroom-shaped storage devices, they’re made out of precious metal encrusted with real gemstones.

The mushroom flash drives are made from yellow, pink, or white 18 karat gold. They’re also bejeweled with rubies, sapphires, or diamonds. The flash drives themselves have just 32 GB of storage space. You’d think for this price, they’d splurge for a 1TB model at least.

I just don’t see anyone buying one of these for that kind of money. Who knows, maybe there really is someone out there with more money than sense. And who also loves mushrooms.

SanDisk Cruzer Orbit Runs Circles Around Other Flash Drives

Flash drives are useful, and I always keep one on me in case I need to transfer files, but they are getting so tiny these days that they are easy to lose. I’ve probably lost about four myself, just because they were so small. This flash drive uses a simple system so that you won’t lose it quite so easily, unless you’re the kind of person who constantly loses their keys.

The SanDisk Cruzer Orbit has a special circular design, allowing it to be easily snapped onto key rings, carabiners, lanyards, as well as ring binders. Its swiveling ring mechanism also doubles as a way to protect the USB connector.

The Only Read And Write iPad Flash Drive

So, you have started to realize that you use your iPad a whole lot more than the notebook that the office loaned out to you for your productivity needs on the go, and with that, you might want to take note that sometimes, carrying around large sized files on a USB flash drive and transferring them to your notebook might be too much of a hassle, especially when your notebook does not come with a SSD and takes like forever to boot up. How about transferring those files to your iPad instead? That is made possible with the $169.95 The Only Read And Write iPad Flash Drive, where this is touted to be one of its kind where flash drives are concerned.

It will plug into a Mac or PC’s USB port, and is capable of carrying up to 16GB worth of files, be they documents, photos, videos, or music, before being hooked up to an iPad or iPhone. This would pave the way for a direct transfer of files to your iOS-powered tablet or smartphone, and it even comes with a free app that allows you to make a back up of your contacts or save email documents that are no larger than 10MB in size directly from the app itself. The Only Read And Write iPad Flash Drive can accommodate more than 35 file formats including Microsoft Word and Excel documents, PDFs, JPGs, MP4, and MP3.

Without PC Lets You Access Data on Your USB Drives – Without a PC

So you need to transfer files from your portable hard drive to a USB drive, but you don’t have access to a PC or laptop. It’s a huge emergency and you need to get it done, pronto. Unfortunately, there’s not an easy way to do it but with a computer – or is there?

Without PC

Designer Dongwook Kim is aware of the inconvenience of needing a computer to access and transfer files between drives, which is why he came up with Without PC. It’s a neat little gadget that lets you access and transfer files between the two drives without, as the name indicates, needing a PC to do so. It’s compact and features a cool, curved touchscreen interface so you can get the job done, pronto.

Without PC1

Without PC is a concept design entry to the 2013 iF design award, but there is no word on a production version at this point. With that custom curved touchscreen we might be waiting a while.
