Flipboard For Windows Phone Spotted At BUILD

Flipboard For Windows Phone Spotted At BUILDThe Flipboard app was originally designed for iOS devices in mind and unlike other apps that curates the news, Flipboard was designed to look like a magazine which gave it a more colorful and more interesting way of consuming news.

It was later released onto Android and was first launched as an exclusive to the Samsung Galaxy S3, although the leaked APK basically put it up for grabs with anyone with a Android device. A release for Windows Phone has yet to be made but presumably it could be soon, thanks to a recent sighting at Microsoft’s BUILD conference. (more…)

Rumor: Facebook Could Launch a Flipboard-Like Reader This Month

Rumor: Facebook Could Launch a Flipboard-Like Reader This Month

Rumors have swirled for some time about the fact that Facebook might be developing a Flipboard-style news reader. Now, a report from re/code suggests that the social network might launch such a service, called Paper, this month.

Facebook Paper Rumored To Be The Company’s Answer To Flipboard

Facebook Paper Rumored To Be The Companys Answer To FlipboardWe’re sure many mobile users are familiar with Flipboard, an app that basically acts like a magazine as it helps users curate news and stories that they might be interested in. Google attempted to compete with Google Currents, and now word on the street is that Facebook could be looking to launch something similar as well with a service called Facebook Paper. At this point in time it is unclear if Facebook intends for Paper to be a mobile app or a website, but basically the concept behind it, if the reports are to be believed, is meant to mimic how content would look like as if it were printed on paper back in the days when digital content was not available.

Naturally Facebook has declined to comment on the rumor, but the reports (via re/code) are claiming that Chris Cox, Facebook’s VP of Product, will be the one leading the company’s efforts, with the team behind the News Feed helping with the creation as well. Assuming this is true, it will be interesting to see if Facebook’s efforts at a magazine-like feature is because they tried to buy out Flipboard but failed. After all Facebook has shown in the past that if they can’t have you, they will try to copy you like what they’ve done with Snapchat. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Would this be a welcome alternative to receiving Facebook updates and news?

Flipboard finally makes its appearance on Windows 8.1

Fans of Flipboard’s curated content experience that are running Windows 8.1 have had to go without a native app on their Microsoft-powered machines, until today. That’s right folks, after promising it was coming, the app is finally here. And with it comes the ability to pin specific sections, magazines or a general Flipboard live tile to your Start screen. Naturally, this version of Flipboard’s been tailored to take advantage of Win8’s gestures as well, so a swipe up provides buttons to subscribe, refresh, edit and flip things, while pulling down from the top lets you see additional content from contributors or stuff others are reading. And, the app supports Windows’ snap feature, so you can use Flipboard side-by-side with other programs. Should you wish to see for yourself before you decide to download, a video walkthrough awaits after the break.

Flipboard Introduces Shoppable Magazines Called Catalogs

Flipboard Introduces Shoppable Magazines Called Catalogs

With the holiday shopping season just around the corner, Flipboard today announced a new feature that’s likely to attract attention. Users can now discover, collect and purchase products through shoppable magazines on Flipboard, which are called catalogs. E-commerce brands can create their own catalogs and sell products on Flipboard, whereas the average user too can create a catalog through the updated “flip.it” bookmarklet for web browsers. At launch, retailers such as Birchbox, ModCloth, Levi’s, Etsy, Banana Republic and more are debuting their catalogs.

Through the updated bookmarklet, users can add items from almost any retail site on the internet to their catalog. Most of these products will display a price when they’re flipped into the user’s magazine, thus automatically indicating to readers that the catalog contains shoppable items. Users can also mix items with photos, videos, audio from SoundCloud and articles. Flipboard has added a new Shopping category in the Content Guide which includes 10 magazines curated by the Flipboard team, shoppable magazines from launch partners and “celebrity curators” like star chef Daniel Boulud, actress Alyssa Milano and singer Sara Evans. Furthermore, Flipboard will continue to feature great shoppable magazines throughout the holiday season, and even after the holiday shopping frenzy has passed.

iOS 7 app update roundup: it’s a flat, flat, flat world

Even if you don’t feel like coughing up the cash for either the iPhone 5c or iPhone 5s, those eligible for an update (that’s if you own an iPhone 4 or up, or an iPad 2 onward) can at least console themselves with iOS 7, which debuts today. Gone is the skeuomorphic design of the Forstall era, and in its place is a flatter interface that promises an entirely new experience for iOS devotees. As such, developers everywhere have been scrambling to get their apps redesigned to match the new mobile OS out of Cupertino. While we can’t possibly cover every update, we’ve compiled a quick list after the break of the more substantial app revamps that have come our way.

Flipboard For BlackBerry To Be Released ‘Soon’

Flipboard For BlackBerry To Be Released Soon

Yesterday the much awaited Flipboard app for BB10 popped up in BlackBerry World, there was just one problem, Flipboard didn’t announce that it had released the app. It was then found out that the app which had popped up was actually an unsupported Android port which wasn’t officially backed. BlackBerry users can already run an Android port of Flipboard on their devices, but an official app has been promised for the platform. Flipboard Community Manager Jon Virtes reiterated the promise today through Twitter, saying that the official app will be coming to “select 10.2 OS BlackBerry phones soon.”

There’s a slight problem here as well. You can’t take “soon” as an indication that the app will be released over the next few days, primarily because BlackBerry is yet to release OS 10.2 to the public. The next major BB10 platform update is expected to be released later this year. There are only three devices currently available that are compatible with the company’s new platform, the Z10, Q10 and Q5. The rumored Z30 phablet is expected to be released in the next few months. The only thing one can take away from this right now is that Flipboard will definitely be released for BlackBerry, but not before OS 10.2 comes out, so steer clear of any unofficial port you come across.

Flipboard arrives for BlackBerry 10, but you can’t use it yet (update: counterfeit app)

Flipboard officially lets Blackberry 10 users in on the aggregation curation fun

Bored, BlackBerry toters? Flipboard is now on BlackBerry World to save your commute, but wait: there’s a rather big catch. It’ll only work with BlackBerry 10.2 OS (since it’s an Android port), and that version isn’t out yet, unless you’re okay with a leaked copy. If so, you’ll be able to use its magazine-style interface to share on up to 12 social networks, save stories for later perusing, curate your own editions (with help from your friends) and more. There are also customized versions for 15 countries, including the UK, Australia and Canada. If and when you get the right OS, you can grab it at the source and starting maxing out on content — including this very tech site.

Update: It turns out the app — while a fully-functioning Android version — was in fact a counterfeit, according to N4BB. That means an illegitimate company managed to slip the version past BlackBerry World gatekeepers, and Flipboard had nothing to do with it. That seems like a rather large oversight on BlackBerry’s part, considering the stature of such an app, but it’s now been pulled from the store. If you managed to grab it, it goes without saying that it’s not a good idea to install it on your device.
