Ford’s fuel-efficiency app call wants to decipher your car’s brain

Ford has issued a challenge to software developers to urge them to create applications for smartphones and other connected devices that help customers optimize their personal fuel efficiency. Ford wants the apps to use the OpenXC platform. The goal for Ford is to help customers share, compare, and learn to optimize their own personal fuel efficiency when driving.

fuel-app

OpenXC is an open-source platform for software and hardware that was created to allow data to be pulled from vehicles and used by smartphones, tablets, and web applications. Ford says that OpenXC is something like an API for cars. Another nice thing about the open platform is that developers don’t need a Ford vehicle to be able to write and test applications.

Ford says the only thing developers need to be able to create apps using OpenXC is a computer and a network connection. The platform data that developers need to write apps using the OpenXC is readily available online. Ford is offering a number of prizes to developers who participate in the challenge.

The grand prize for best overall app will when the developer $25,000. The second place prize is $15,000 and the third-place prize will be $5000. If developers create an honorable mention app, they will be awarded $3000 and the popular choice app will win $1000. Ford will also give out $100 each to the top 10 ideas entered.

Ford launches 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine

Ford continues to add new fuel-efficient EcoBoost engines to power a variety of vehicles in its global vehicle lineup. Ford recently announced a new 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine that will join its lineup of fuel-efficient turbocharged engines. Ford says the new engine will help to meet the strong global demand for four-cylinder EcoBoost powertrains.

ecoboost1-5

Ford now has the capacity to build 1.6 million EcoBoost engines annually with the addition of the new 1.5-liter model. By the end of 2013, Ford will have six plants across Europe, Asia, and North America producing EcoBoost engines. That is three times as many facilities producing these engines as Ford had in 2010.

The 1.5-liter engine is the fifth member of the EcoBoost family and will be produced initially at Ford’s facility in Craiova, Romania. Mass production of the new engine will begin later this month and Ford says that other manufacturing locations for the engine will be announced in the future. The first vehicle to get the new 1.5-liter engine will be the Ford Mondeo that will debut in China later this month at Auto Shanghai 2013.

The 1.5-liter engine will also find its way under the hood of the Fusion sedan in North America and the new Mondeo in Europe a later date. The engine uses an aluminum block and has twin-cams. It also features the integrated exhaust manifold introduced on the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine. Ford says that the 1.5-liter EcoBoost will deliver similar horsepower and torque compared to its current 1.6-liter EcoBoost.

Ford builds the one millionth Mustang

Of all the automobiles that Ford builds, one of the most iconic is the Mustang. This week the Ford Mustang celebrated its 49th birthday and on Wednesday the one millionth Mustang rolled off the assembly line. If you’re curious, that millionth Mustang appears to be a convertible ruby red GT with the Track Pack designed for high-performance driving.

KGT_5115e

The one millionth Mustang was constructed Wednesday at Ford’s Flat Rock. The same plant will also build the Fusion beginning in late August. The Ford Mustang was first introduced as a 1964 1/2 model 49 years ago. Mustangs have been produced in Flat Rock since 2004. Before assembly began at the Flat Rock plant, America’s first pony car was built at the Rouge plant in Dearborn.

While the one millionth Mustang is a significant milestone for Ford, the automaker and fans of the Mustang are really looking forward to next year. To celebrate the 50th birthday of the quintessential American pony car, Ford will be rolling out a completely new Mustang. When that new Mustang will launch remains unclear.

The Ford Mustang is the only American pony car that’s been in continuous production. Competing products such as the Camaro, Challenger, and Charger have all been discontinued at one point or another. The plant manufactures the Mustang, will begin manufacturing the Fusion, and has the flexibility to build up to six models. Ford says that the plant output will be adjusted to produce a mix of Mustangs and fusions depending on customer demand.

Ford Focus named best-selling car in 2012

Having the crown for the best car of the year is certainly something, but claiming the top spot for the best-selling car is just plain good for business. It’s turns out that the Ford Focus is the world’s top-selling vehicle of 2012, with a close second going to the Toyota Corolla, and third place going to Ford’s F-series of trucks.

ford-focus-ev-580x385

The data comes from Polk, who monitors and gathers information on global new-vehicle registration data. According to the numbers, Ford sold just over 1.02 million Focuses in 2012, Toyota sold just under 873,000 Corollas, and Ford again sold just over 785,500 F-series trucks. However, what’s most interesting is what vehicle took the fourth spot.

Coming in fourth place, selling almost 770,000 units, is the Wuling Zhiguang, which is an odd-looking mini van that sells in China. Wuling is co-owned by General Motors and SAIC Motors, so essentially, GM’s top-selling vehicle in 2012 was this weird-looking thing. The only other GM vehicle in the top 10 is the Chevy Cruze, which came in at number 8 with 661,000 sold.

Other vehicles that appeared in the top 10 list include the Toyota Camry with 729,800 units sold, the Ford Fiesta selling 723,100 units, the VW Golf selling just under 700,000, the Honda Civic with 651,160 units sold, and the Honda CR-V at 625,000 sold.

Ford unveils “Video Snacks” to educate buyers about vehicle features

Anyone who has ever purchased a new vehicle directly from a dealership knows how tedious the process can be. Very rarely can you just walk in, sign the papers, and drive away. Typically, you end up having to sit there during the long finance process while they try to sell you a number of things you don’t really want and then the dealership wants to put somebody in the car with you to train you to use certain features of the vehicle.

The problem is that by the time you finally get to that feature training portion of the car buying process, all most people can think of is getting out of there. Ford has announced that it has created a series of short videos to help car buyers learn how to use the features of their vehicles on their own. Ford calls the short videos “Video Snacks.”

The new videos are part of Ford’s revamped Vehicle Orientation program launched this week at dealerships all around the country. The program will also send e-mail checklists to buyers along with links to the Video Snacks on Ford’s website. The Video Snacks are short videos explaining how to use specific features of the car such as remote start systems, MyKey, and the Integrated Blind Spot Mirrors.

The salesperson will walk the buyer through an orientation guide for specific features that they want to learn about during delivery or on their own. The list of features the buyer wants to learn about will be e-mailed to them along with a link to the video that goes along with those features. The first video below is an overview of the program and the second video is one of the video snacks Ford is using to help train new vehicle owners.

Ford and GM team up to develop advanced nine and 10-speed transmissions

Automotive manufacturers are using every trick in the book to squeeze more fuel efficiency of their vehicles to help buyers at the pump and to meet looming federal mandates for efficiency. One of the ways many manufacturers are doing this is by going to automatic transmissions that have more forward speeds. Having a transmission with more speeds allows lower engine RPMs on the highway leading to less fuel consumption.

10spauto

In the past, many vehicles had used four or five-speed automatic transmissions. The six-speed automatic transmission became common over the last several years and now manufacturers are looking beyond that to seven and eight-speed transmissions. Ford and General Motors recently announced that they will jointly develop advanced nine and 10-speed automatic transmissions.

The two automakers say that the initial design and engineering work on the new transmissions is already underway. The new transmissions being developed will be used for both front and rear wheel drive vehicles and promise better fuel efficiency and improved performance. The agreement between Ford and GM marks the third time in the last decade the two automakers have collaborated on transmissions.

Previous engineering tie-ups between the two companies helped produce high-quality six-speed transmissions for front-wheel-drive vehicles. The two automakers have delivered more than 8 million of these transmissions to vehicles around the globe. The nine and 10-speed automatic transmissions will be used in just about every automotive segment including cars, crossovers, SUVs, and trucks. More details will be announced closer to the launch of transmissions.

Editorial: Self-driving cars FTW, but not for everybody

DNP Editorial Selfdriving cars FTW, but not for everybody

I drive a two-seat roadster known for its great handling. The last thing I want is for a machine to take the steering wheel out of my hands. My car company isn’t into self-driving cars, but others are: Ford, BMW, Audi. And, of course, Google is moving quickly forward with road-worthy autocars that have accumulated 300,000 miles with only one (human error) accident. The advantages of cars that drive themselves are multiple and compelling.

Automobile intelligence already assists the driving experience by warning of dangerous situations and taking control of parking, which is, for some people, the most difficult maneuver to perform. We are gradually ceding control to our cars. When a completely automated consumer car launches, some drivers will hand over the reins gladly. But for me and other enthusiasts, driving a car isn’t just about reaching a destination; it’s about the journey and operating a beautiful machine. Unfortunately for people who feel that way, the greatest social benefits of self-driving cars would kick in if everyone were herded into a new era of hands-off driving.

Toyota says Corolla outsold the Focus despite Ford’s claims

Toyota and Ford are battling over numbers, each claiming to have the top numbers and the bestselling global nameplate. First Ford published its numbers, which put itself in the top slot, only for Toyota to follow up a short while later with its own numbers, which trumped Ford’s and bumped the latter company down to second place.

fordlogo2003

The problem stems with deciding whose numbers are correct. According to Ford, which is going with data by R.L. Polk & Co., its Focus is the top-selling compact car at 1.02 million sales in 2012. Toyota disagreed, and stated later that same day that its Corolla is top, with sales clocking in at 1.16 million, a fairly substantial jump over the 872,774 sales pegged by R.L. Polk & Co.

This isn’t the first time Ford and Toyota have butted heads over which manufacturer’s vehicle outsold the other, with both having claimed top 6-month global car sales last fall. That time around, Ford used data from IHS Automotive, which neglected to include certain derivative varieties of the Corolla in its report. Not surprisingly, Toyota took issue with the data and claim.

According to Toyota’s US Vice President Mike Michels, “Corolla registrations attributed to Polk come up short by nearly 300,000 units. This discrepancy is glaring and we have requested clarification.” No response has been provided yet, however. Until things are clarified, Ford is maintaining its claim as being in the top position, something that is no small success in light of Toyota’s long history of domination in the car market.

2014 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition unveiled

Ford has unveiled the F-150 SVT Raptor, a special edition in its popular truck line that is touted as offering “unique touches” over the regular edition including a different color and interior upgrades. The truck is slated to go on sale some time this fall, although a specific date wasn’t given, and neither was a price. We’ve a gallery available after the jump.

Ford SVT Raptor 1

The SVT Raptor will be available in two colors: Ruby Red Metallic and Tuxedo Black Metallic. The special edition boasts box-side graphics, and an interior upgrade to Brick Red seat bolsters, cloth honeycomb highlights, and black inserts, panel applique accents on the center stack and door panel, and a console top finish panel. This is on top of the luxury package already offered by the standard Raptor edition.

The F-150 SVT Raptor will only be offered with a 6.2-liter V8 engine, which offers 434lb-ft of torque and 411 horses under the hood. There’s also a 6-speed auto transmission that is accompanied by a tow and haul mode, as well as SelectShift Automatic technology. The truck is 4-wheel-drive and boasts electronic shifting. Because it is a 4WD model, it will also feature a Torsen limited-slip differential.

Ford’s Truck Group Marketing Manager Doug Scott had this to say: “Raptor owners are looking for a high-performing, uncompromising off-road pickup truck with the features and luxuries found in today’s premium trucks. Since its launch in 2009, we’ve continually moved Raptor forward in capability and design, and the 2014 Special Edition is the best Raptor yet.”

Ford hit with class action lawsuit over spontaneous acceleration

Ford has been hit with a class action lawsuit by its customers across fourteen states due to an issue with certain models subject to spontaneous acceleration with no way to stop. The lawsuit specifically concerns Ford cars from 2002 to 2010, with claims that the manufacturer deliberately hid the issue from buyers, resulting in the sale of vehicles that aren’t worth as much as the consumers paid.

ford

Says the lawsuit, which was filed in a federal Huntington, West Virginia court on Friday: “Ford could have and should have prevented the dangers presented by these foreseeable incidents by including [a fail-safe system or brake-override feature]. Ford affirmatively concealed from plaintiffs and the other class members the defect.”

Specific models listed in the lawsuit include the 2002 to 2005 Mercury Cougar, the 2005 to 2010 Ford Mustang, and the 2004 through 2010 Ford Explorer. There are 19 plaintiffs listed that represent owners from 14 states across the US, ranging from Florida to New York and a bunch between. They hope to have representatives from every state by the time trial starts.

For those interested, this is case Belville v. Ford Motor Co., 12-cv-06529, U.S. District Court, Southern District of West Virginia (Huntington). Earlier this month, Ford recalled nearly 200,000 vehicles due to an issue that could potentially cause a sudden engine stall, which also posed a safety risk, although no crashes had been reported due to the issue.
