In order to reach automobile utopia of the future, Ford needs to lay the foundations of that dream today. That is why the car maker has chosen to join forces … Continue reading
Ford has worked out a new automated driving research project with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University, where it will continue from where the automated Ford Fusion Hybrid research vehicle left off (which was also unveiled last month, actually), and the combined teams will work on solutions that will hopefully kiss goodbye to a number of technical challenges that have proven to difficult to solve where automated driving is concerned, until now. Ford is working with US regulators on ways to protect driver privacy as more cars become connected, with chief exec Alan Mulally being forced to backtrack on suggestions that the … Continue reading
I’ve had a few opportunities to play with the Oculus Rift head-mounted VR display over the last year or so, but most of the demonstrations I’ve tried have focused on gaming applications. On the other hand, Ford is using this technology to help designers visualize the interiors and exteriors of new vehicles.
The demonstration, which used a combination of a rare full HD prototype of the Oculus Rift goggles, along with VRED industrial design software from Autodesk allows wearers to sit in a full-scale virtual model of a vehicle.
When wearing the Rift, your can sit inside the vehicle and look around to see every minute detail of the car or truck’s interior, and you can also look at it from outside.
While the demonstration I tested out didn’t let you actually walk around the vehicle, the version being used at Ford’s Design Center is capable of this.
Even if virtual reality doesn’t provide the tactile feedback of working with clay models or prototype vehicles, it does permit designers to test out vehicle layouts at very early stages, as well as to quickly test modifications. As the Oculus Rift continues to improve, and gets closer to a final commercial build, I can only imagine these sort of simulations getting more and more realistic.
Ford has revealed the all-new F-150, the latest version of the company’s best-selling truck, redesigned with an aluminum-alloy body, 2.7L EcoBoost engine, and smart-tech features like 360-degree cameras and LED … Continue reading
Sitting in a parking lot across the street from the convention center was a driving demonstration from Ford. They were here at CES 2014 showing off the Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication technology, … Continue reading
The idea of a green vehicle has definitely gained traction. After all, fossil fuels are finite in terms of its availability, and it is wise to start paying attention to renewable fuel and energy sources to keep the constantly growing automotive industry moving along in the right direction. Ford has taken a look at hybrid cars, and they intend to work on a hybrid sei-solar vehicle that will be able to run partly on sunlight, which is a good thing. After all, the sun still rises in the east and sets in the west every single day, right? At least for most of us, unless you live in some faraway place that gives you half a year of sunlight and another half a year of darkness. What you see above is not what Ford has in mind on our roads, but it is just there for illustrative purposes. Ford’s focus on the concept would be based on the C-Max platform known as the Solar Energi.
C-Max happens to be a compact which has already been constructed with special regard to gas mileage, where the photovoltaic panels that line the car’s roof are capable of giving up to 34 kilometers of range on pure electric power alone, and it can hit a whopping 1,000 kilometers based on electric-assisted gas power. Of course, we have no idea on how long the charge time is at the moment, so hopefully details will be ironed out in due time.
A good rumor never dies, or so it seems. In fact, it does sound as though we are looking at a deja vu situation here, as Ford CEO Alan Mulally has shot down rumors which are making their way around news circles that he is being lined up to be the next person in charge of Microsoft. Mulally has informed the Associated Press yesterday, saying, “I have no other plans to do anything other than serve Ford,” and will remain with the motor giant at least until the end of this year.
In the past, the many reports concerning Mulally’s “imminent departure” have proven to be an unwelcome distraction for the motor giant Ford. Good thing it has not affected the price of Ford’s shares negatively in the past, since we have seen the prices of these shares more than double ever since Mulally hooked up with Ford all the way back in 2006. Something tells us that this will not be the last time we will hear of Alan Mulally joining forces with Microsoft right at the very top, since as late as October last year, we have heard Mulally issuing a similar negative response to such baseless rumors. Why do you think that this rumor has such a long shelf life?
Thanks to Ford and Domino’s unholy union of utility, gluttony, and good old fashioned American engineering, your next car could come with a built-in pizza ordering app. Are those tears running down Lady Libety’s face you see? Nope—just meat sweats.
Usually if one wanted to get in-vehicle features, whether it be a new stereo system or a connected dashboard, they would either have to upgrade it themselves or get a new model entirely that would feature said system. Well the good news for drivers who are looking forward to trying out Ford’s SYNC AppLink is that if you own a Ford vehicle 2010 or later, your vehicle should be eligible for a free upgrade to the SYNC AppLink system.
