Foxconn Factory Reportedly Ceases iPhone 5c Production

Foxconn Factory Reportedly Ceases iPhone 5c ProductionIt was not too long ago when we brought you whispers of Apple reducing its iPhone 5c production over at Foxconn’s Zhengzhou factory, where it originally churned out 50,000 iPhone 5c units each day, down to a paltry 8,000 per day. Don’t you think that this is a rather sad predicament to be in if you were the iPhone 5c? I guess being the “wingman” of the iPhone 5s did not pan out too well for it. We now have a report from the folks over at Digitimes that Foxconn is going to cease all iPhone 5c production at the very same Zhengzhou factory, but rather, will switch over to the iPhone 5s.

After all, it is the iPhone 5s that makes a whole lot of money for Apple considering the sheer number of sales figures that the smartphone had racked up. It remains to be seen just how well (or not) the plastic iPhone 5c has performed in the market, since Apple has not delivered a detailed breakdown of its sales figures according to the various models that are available. One thing is for sure though, if you want to pick up a plastic iPhone 5c, then it would not be too difficult to hunt down one.

Pegatron iPhone 5c Production Reportedly Down To Just 80,000 Units Per Day

Pegatron iPhone 5c Production Reportedly Down To Just 80,000 Units Per Day

Its not like there haven’t already been many rumors about how the iPhone 5c is not performing as well as Apple might have hoped. It has consistently been rumored by news outlets as well as market analysts that the iPhone 5c sales are weak, particularly in emerging markets, where it was expected to shine. It has also been rumored many times that as a result of weak demand, Apple has been cutting production of its “unapologetically plastic” iPhone. Latest reports coming in from China suggest that Pegatron, one of the main manufacturers of the iPhone 5c, has been ordered to cut production down to just 80,000 units per day.

The report claims that Pegatron was producing 320,000 iPhone 5c units daily in October, this gives an idea of just how drastic the production cuts are. Foxconn, Apple’s secondary manufacturer for the iPhone 5c, is believed to be producing units at a minimal level. Foxconn is apparently only producing 8-9,000 iPhone 5c units per day. On the other hand, it has been rumored that Apple has ordered Foxconn to boost iPhone 5s production as the premium smartphone continues to be in high demand. Shipping estimates for the iPhone 5s have begun to improve only recently. It remains to be seen if there will be more iPhone 5c production cuts down the line or if sales are miraculously going to get a boost around the holiday shopping season.

Foxconn Testing Out New 12.9-Inch iPad (Rumor)

Foxconn Testing Out New 12.9 Inch iPad (Rumor)Foxconn has been a close manufacturing partner of Apple’s for quite a number of years now, although they have run into some rather serious issues of their own in the past – including suicides and all that. GSMInsider has reported that they have heard from a source (an unidentified one at that) from China that Foxconn is currently performing tests on a new iPad that comes with a 12.9” display. This is interesting, especially when you consider that Foxconn currently assembles Apple’s existing iPads and iPhones. Needless to say, the amount of detail concerning the 12.9” iPad is extremely scarce, so we are pretty much in the dark as to what the 12.9” iPad will offer.

One also ought to take note that in recent memory, the iPad mini has started to perform better and better in terms of sales, and to hear that Apple might be working on a larger sized iPad at 12.9” might just kick start the tablet segment for Cupertino. They are not quite in the doldrums though, as the iPad range is still the best selling tablet device at the moment in most markets. Would you bite should a new 12.9″ iPad from Apple hits the market, or do you think that 9.7″ is enough?

Apple Said To Tap More Suppliers To Increase iPhone 5c and iPad Mini Production

Apple Said To Tap More Suppliers To Increase iPhone 5c and iPad Mini Production

The latest bit of scuttlebutt from within Apple’s supply chain suggests that the company is going to tap two additional suppliers to produce iPhone 5c and iPad mini units as it looks to increase production as demand continues to rise. Citing people “familiar with the supply chain,” The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple will tap Taiwan’s Wistron to manufacture iPhone 5c later this year, whereas it will bring Taiwan’s Compal Communications onboard early next year for manufacturing the iPad mini. There have already been a lot of rumors about iPad mini supply constraints, supply isn’t expected to improve until next year, perhaps adding a new supplier will ease up things and finally meet demand.

According to the report, Apple is looking to broaden its supplier base as its primary supplier, Foxconn, focuses on producing the iPhone 5s which too is supposedly in short supply. Furthermore, Foxconn has also been under scrutiny for its labor practices, which are apparently “creating a headache for Apple.” Apparently a disagreement was also triggered between Apple and Foxconn when high return rate for defective iPhone 5 units lead them to bicker over who would foot the bill for repair cost, says Alvin Kwock, an analyst at J.P. Morgan.

Apple retail store in Brazil tipped to open by March

The first rumblings we heard that Apple was looking to open its first retail store in South America surfaced in November of 2012. Those rumblings were about a year ago and this week rumblings have resurfaced with a tip from a source claiming to be familiar with Apple’s plans. That source claims that the Apple […]

Foxconn PlayStation 4 labor policies broken for student interns

It would appear that the team responsible keeping labor policies intact for at least one Foxconn manufacturing plant in China is in it deep this week as a group of students was found to be working well beyond their normal allotment of intern hours. What we’ve got here is a set of student engineering majors […]

7-Eleven strikes deal with Hon Hai to sell tablets and notebooks in Taiwan

7-Eleven strikes deal with Hon Hai to sell tablets and notebooks in Taiwan

The stars have aligned in such a way that two of our favorite, yet disparate interests are crossing paths: gadgets and Slurpees. Hon Hai Precision Industry (better known as Foxconn’s parent company) has struck a deal with 7-Eleven, and will manufacture slates for the latter to sell in Taiwan. Details are slim on the 7-inch (7.11-inch?) tablet, but it’s now up for pre-order, and the pair hope to give 3,000 units new homes in the first three months of sales. As absurd as it sounds, this isn’t the first partnership between the unlikely couple. In June, a similar deal resulted in 7-Eleven-branded TVs (in 40-, 60- and 70-inch flavors), and over 15,000 have been sold since. Now, a 50-inch set has been added to the mix, and between five and ten new products — which include smartphones and laptops — will be available by years’ end. Rather than crowding the inside of shops with the gadgets, the televisions were up for order through the convenience store’s 7net website as well as brick and mortar locations, and it appears the other hardware will follow suit. We don’t expect the gas station to dabble in electronics stateside, so you might as well make the most of a trip to Taiwan and pick up a Honey Lemon Slurpee while you’re at it.

The iPhone 5C Is Already Involved in a Labor Violations Scandal

A little less than a week before it’s supposed to be unveiled to the public, the iPhone 5C is attracting attention from human rights groups for possible labor violations. While it feels like deja vu after the many Foxconn scandals, there’s an important difference this time. The factory is American-owned.

Google Foxconn patent buy amps up augmented reality for Glass

Though they’ve not said so in so many words, the folks at Hon Hai Precision (aka Foxconn) have just sold patents to Google that’ll allow the US-based company to expand their hold on the world of augmented reality through head-mounted displays. This buy can quite readily be traced to the wearable device known as Google […]

WSJ: China investigating Foxconn and others over river pollution

    Image

Infamous gadget manufacturer Foxconn is in the news once again after Chinese authorities alleged that the company has been dumping heavy metals into local rivers. Environmental regulator Ding Yudong believes that Foxconn and UniMicron Technology’s facilities in Kunshan may be allowing toxic, cancer-causing substances to pass into the water table. Both companies have already issued firm denials claiming that the black-green fluid, which locals describe as “sudsy,” is compliant with local laws. All we need to do now is find the guy with the heart ring.
