Suicides At Foxconn Continue As Workers Toil In Silent Mode

Suicides At Foxconn Continue As Workers Toil In Silent ModeIt has been three years running, that a small number of those working at Foxconn have committed suicide for various reasons from 2010 onwards, and the latest suicide at a Foxconn plant would extend this unwanted run to four years. In fact, it was reported that a couple of staff suicide attempts happened in Foxconn’s Zhengzhou plant in central China’s Henan province, all within the space of four days.

Both factory workers (one male and the other, female) attempted to snuff out their respective lives by leaping from the building that they were working in between April 24 and April 27. The man is no longer alive, while the woman’s fate remains unknown. It seems that whispers from the inside claim that the Zhengzhou factory has entered “silent mode” from the beginning of April, where workers cannot talk about anything that has nothing to do with work while on company premises, although one does wonder who enforces such a draconian rule. Still, offenders were said to get a lower pay, or worse off, fired. Humans aren’t machines and should not be imposed to work under such rules if the reports are true, and it does seem to be more of a working environment for robots than anything else.

Tech Companies Donate Money To Aid China’s Earthquake Affectees

Tech Companies Donate Money To Aid Chinas Earthquake Affectees

Some people have misconceptions that tech companies are all about money, that all they do is churn out new products every quarter to maximize their earnings. Many big companies are involved in social not-for-profit projects, its their way of “giving back.” As we all know that China’s Sichuan province was rocked by a massive earthquake on Saturday, to aid affectees of this calamity, many big tech companies are donating money. These companies include arch rivals Apple and Samsung.

Sichuan province was hit by the earthquake on Saturday morning, it resulted in over 11,000 people being injured, more than 100,000 becoming homeless and some 200 passing away. Companies from around the world are donating money to aid relief efforts, around $32 million has been collectively donated up till now. Samsung China pledged $9.7 million, Apple has pledged $8 million, Foxconn $8 million, Dell China $323,000, Asus $485,000 and Microsoft China pledged $161,000. It is nice to see that these companies are helping out people that have been struck by this natural disaster. Hopefully more companies will get on board soon, this would greatly aid in rehabilitation of the Sichuan earthquake affectees.

Apple reportedly returns 8m iPhone to Foxconn over quality issues

Apple has reportedly sent back a batch of as much as eight million iPhones to Foxconn after the Cupertino-based company deemed the new units unfit for sale. The reason behind Apple’s rejection of the new batch of phones remains rather dubious at this point, but it’s said it’s “due to appearance of substandard or dysfunctional problems.”

iphone

According to China Business, and translated by The Register, the total amount that this could cost Foxconn would be around $1.6 billion. However, this would only be the case if the returned iPhones couldn’t be salvaged, which seems rather unlikely. It’s said at least five million and up to eight million iPhones were sent back to the Chinese manufacturer.

It’s not said which iPhone models were sent back, but they could most likely be the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 4S, the latter of which is still being manufactured and going on sale. It could also even be the rumored iPhone 5S getting the quality rejection, but we highly doubt it, considering that we would’ve heard many rumors about the upcoming phone’s production.

As far as the impact that this will have on Apple, it’s said that eight million iPhone failing to pass Cupertino’s quality inspections could create stock shortages for the company that could last a few weeks, but we doubt that will create many problems on the consumer end, as this time of year doesn’t see as much shipments compared to the fall or the winter.

Foxconn Is Microsoft’s Biggest Patent Licensee (Of, Uh, Android Patents…?)

Foxconn has become Microsoft’s biggest single patent licensee. While that might not be surprising—the Taiwanese manufacturer produces an amazing 40 percent of the world’s consumer electronic devices—the fact that the patents are over Android might be. More »

Microsoft announces patent licensing agreement with Foxconn parent Hon Hai

Microsoft has announced the signing of a patent licensing agreement with Hon Hai, parent company of Foxconn. The agreement covers devices that run Chrome OS and Android, such as smartphones and tablets, and is even said to cover televisions. This makes Hon Hai the latest in what is a growing list of manufacturers with Chrome and Android patent licenses.

Not much is known about the lincensing agreement, with the announcement by Microsoft stating that it is confidential in nature. The only detail released was that Microsoft will be getting royalties from Hon Hai, although actual numbers weren’t specified. According to Microsoft, this is one of over 1100 licensing agreements it has taken part in.

Said Microsoft’s Intellectual Property Group’s VP and Deputy General Counsel Horacio Gutierrez: “We are pleased that the list of companies benefitting from Microsoft’s Android licensing program now includes the world’s largest contract manufacturer, Hon Hai. By licensing both brand name companies and their contract manufacturers, we have successfully increased the overall effectiveness and global reach of the program.”

Hon Hai also had things to say, with the director of its Intellectual Property Department saying that the company both recognizes and respects the protection of intellectual property, and that its licensing deal with Microsoft is representative of such. The Foxconn parent company is presently the largest maker of contract electronics in the world.

Microsoft And Hon Hai Sign Patent Agreement For Android, Chrome Devices

Microsoft And Hon Hai Sign Patent Agreement For Android, Chrome Devices If you think that the name Hon Hai is extremely familiar, that is because they are the parent company of Foxconn, and I am quite sure that Foxconn has made quite a name for itself in the world consciousness with them being one of the main manufacturers of Apple devices. Well, just today, Microsoft Corp. and Hon Hai have come together to sign a worldwide patent licensing agreement which will be able to deliver broad coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio for devices that are powered by either the Android or Chrome operating systems, and these will include smartphones, tablets and TVs.

Needless to say, the contents of the agreement will remain confidential, although there are parties that claim that Microsoft will be on the receiving end of royalties from Hon Hai under the agreement. Hon Hai is not the first, and neither does it look like they will be the last in a growing list of contract manufacturing and original design manufacturing companies that have something to do with Android and Chrome patent licenses.

Foxconn parent Hon Hai licenses Microsoft’s patents for Android, Chrome devices

Microsoft has insisted for years that companies building products based on Android and Chrome are treading on ground covered by its patent portfolio, and it’s continuing to press that claim. Today it announced it’s agreed to IP licensing terms with another device maker — Foxconn parent Hon Hai. Perhaps best known for making many Apple products, the massive company manufactures more than 40 percent of consumer electronics devices in the world. According to the press release the deal covers patents for phones, tablets and TVs, and will result in Microsoft receiving royalty payments. We’ve already seen companies like HTC and LG choose to cut a deal over the technology, while Google-owned Motorola is continuing to fight. It’s far too soon to know how those court battles will be resolved, but while the team in Redmond may not have caught up to Android in mobile market share, that doesn’t mean it’s not getting paid.

Foxconn Hiring New Employees To Build The iPhone 5S

Foxconn Hiring New Employees To Build The iPhone 5S

We’ve been hearing a lot of rumors concerning Apple’s next iPhone, which everyone in the tech world assumes will be the iPhone 5S, as we’ve seen a possible prototype, heard of multiple sizes being made available as well as an analyst believing the iPhone 5S will come with some additional bells and whistles. Regardless of what the iPhone 5S will feature, one thing is for sure and that’s the news Foxconn has started preparing for the next iPhone.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Foxconn has started to add new employees to its Zhengzhou plant, which is known for being a major manufacturer of Apple’s iPhone. This puts to an end a two month hiring freeze the company implemented back in February as these new workers will reportedly work on assembling the upcoming iPhone 5S as well as existing iPhone models which Apple requests a boost in capacity. Foxconn rumored to be on hiring spree for iPhone 5S production

Rumors of the iPhone 5S have been pouring in lately, so it’s no surprise that we’re now hearing reports that Foxconn is beginning to ramp up production on the iPhone 5S and is beginning to hire more workers to take on the increase in production. The Zhengzhou factory in China, specifically saw in increase in workers, with recruiting beginning back in February.

According to Bloomberg, the extra workers will assemble the iPhone 5S, as well as existing models, like the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S. The move to increase production and hire more workers comes after the authorization from Apple to do so. The Zhengzhou factory alone employs between 250,000 to 300,000 workers.

It’s said that Foxconn has hired around 10,000 assembly-line workers per week since the end of last month, according to the Wall Street Journal, who also claims that their own sources report that Foxconn has ramped up production. Both Foxconn and Apple have declined to comment on the situation, only saying that the companies will increase employment to meet seasonal demands.

Recent rumors have noted that the iPhone 5S will officially enter production at some point during Q2 this year, with the launch of the new phone to take place at some point later this year, perhaps as early as June. However, other reports mention another fall release for the iPhone 5S, with a lower-cost iPhone to follow.

Foxconn sales fell 19% this quarter, blame is placed on Apple’s iPhone

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, also known as Foxconn, has reported a 19% decline in sales for Q1 this year. Its sales totaled T$808.97 billion ($27 billion USD) this quarter, which is down from T$1 trillion ($33.37 billion USD) it generated in Q1 2012, and down from the T$988.34 billion ($33.31 billion USD) it generated in Q4 2012. Because Foxconn gets a lot of its business from Apple’s iPhones and iPads, many people are blaming the “lack of demand” for Apple’s products to be the reasoning behind Foxconn’s decline.

Foxconn sales decline 19 percent due to disappointing demand in iPhone

According to Reuters, Foxconn generates around 60%-70% of its revenue from assembling Apple’s iPhones and iPads, as well as performing other services for Apple. An analyst for KGI Securities, Ming-chi Kuo, states that a quarterly decline for Foxconn was expected, because Q4 is the very important holiday quarter, but a yearly decline was a big surprise. Kuo states,

“This shows that Hon Hai’s revenue depends too much on Apple, and iPhone orders corrected more than expected.”

Along with the decline of Foxconn’s sales, Reuters reports that Apple also didn’t reach its Wall Street revenue forecast for Q4 2012, which brings fears that Apple’s dominance in the mobile business may be on the decline as well. Apple sold about 48 million of its iPhones in Q4 2012, however, that number was millions less than what analysts believed it would be able to sell.

Kuo also believes that Foxconn will post flat sales this quarter, and that for the first half of this year, it will be seeing some decline in its net profit. However, Apple’s iPhone may not be entirely at fault here, seeing as Foxconn also assembles devices for many other major companies, including HP, Microsoft, Sony, Dell, and many more. Later this month, when Foxconn reports its quarterly earnings, we shall find out the real reason behind Foxconn’s decline in sales, whether it’s really Apple or not. On the bright side for Apple, at least its smartphone market share has increased.
