Sharp’s new 443 ppi 5-inch smartphone displays on show at CEATEC 2012 (eyes-on)

Sharp's new 443 ppi 5inch smartphone displays on show at CEATEC 2012 eyeson

Here at CEATEC, the Japanese display maker is showing of its latest portable displays. Although the vivid 1080p displays were scurried away in the corner of Sharp’s stand, we managed to grab a few photos of its 443 PPI smartphone screen yet. From these prototype samples (the screen will go into production later this month) the screen is looking pretty good, with Sharp‘s thinnest GS-Silicon technology reducing the layers between the LCD display and our eyes. Although we were told not to touch, viewing angles were also good — we could see ourselves gazing at YouTube clips on this screen in whichever smartphone it ends up on.

Sharp begins production of 1080p smartphone displays: 443 ppi crammed into a 5-inch LCD

Sharp begins production of 1080p smartphone displays: 443 ppi crammed into a 5-inch LCD

Layoffs and loans may be dominating our Sharp coverage at the moment, but that just makes this type of news all the sweeter. The company has announced its LCD panel type 5 — a 5-inch full HD (1,920 x 1,080) display packing a Retina-busting 443 ppi (just trumping LG’s similar 440 ppi LCD). An outcome of its layer-reducing CG-Silicon technology, the smartphone-targeted screen goes into full-scale production this month and will be shown off at CEATEC Japan this very week. We’ll try to give it eyes-on treatment at the show, but you can rub your hands together sinisterly in the meantime and just think about the glorious devices which will bear it.

Sony NEX-VG900 full-frame Handycam and NEX-VG30 camcorders debut

Sony has revealed a pair of new Handycams, including the full-frame NEX-VG900 and its more compact APS-C NEX-VG30 sibling, for pro-videographers with a sub-$3k budget. The Sony NEX-VG900 packs a 24.3-megapixel Exmor sensor – the same resolution as the RX1 and roughly 40x the size of most consumer camcorder sensors – and grabs both 24-megapixel stills and 25p/24p progressive Full HD video as well as the option of 50p recording.

There’s also a Quad Capsule Spatial Array Microphone – made up of four omnidirectional capsules that can be flipped between 5.1-channel and stereo recording – with adjustable levels, and the optional XLR-K1M adaptor kit that throws in a mono shotgun microphone and XLR ports for external mics. A “seesaw” zoom lever promises smoother control over power-zoom lenses, and there’s a bundled adapter for slapping on A-mount DSLR lenses and getting the right focal width. The NEG-VG900 also switches automatically to APS-C mode when either an E-mount or A-mount DT lens is fitted.

Sony has included both manual and autofocus modes, with the latter offering both contrast AF and focal plane phase detection AF during 24p mode standby and still image modes (as long as you’re using the LA-EA3 mount adapter); phase detection AF is also available using the LA-EA2 mount adapter, while Contrast AF is provided when using E-mount lenses. For exposure, there’s 99-segment metering.

As for the NEX-VG30, that has a 16.1-megapixel APS-C sensor and uses E-mount lenses, delivering Full HD video in 24p, 25p and 50p modes. Both camcorders have an XGA OLED viewfinder with 100-percent field of view, and a 3-inch touchscreen LCD with swivel-mount. Connectivity includes component/composite/S-Video/HDMI outputs, USB, headphones, a mini-jack stereo mic input, Multi Interface Show, and a combo remote terminal and A/V remote terminal port.

The Sony NEX-VG900 Handycam will drop in late October, priced at $3,299.95 body-only, while the Sony NEX-VG30 will follow in November, priced at $1,799.95 body-only or $2,699.95 paired with the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 power zoom with optical image stabilization.

Acer Aspire ZS600 AIO announced at IFA 2012: 23-inch multi-touch Windows 8 PC (hands-on)

Acer Aspire ZS600 AIO announced at IFA 2012 23inch multitouch Windows 8 PC

As we inch closer towards that October 26th release, the glut of announced Windows 8 devices continues to grow and today is no exception. At Acer’s press conference here at IFA 2012, the company unveiled its new all-in-one PC: the Aspire ZS600. At first glance, the AIO’s adjustable aluminum frame enclosure didn’t much strike us “contemporary” per the company’s claims, as it seemed to blend into the vast array of similar PCs showcased at the booth. And without any available keyboard dock to help us navigate that vibrant 23-inch full HD display, we were left to make use of the screen’s 10-point multi-touch which proved a tad frustrating, bordering on ineffectual — at least on this demo model. We also witnessed a considerable amount of glare in our brief time testing the product, though it’s worth noting we were surrounded by a multitude of showroom lighting.

Powering this multimedia-focused family AIO along is Intel’s 3rd generation chipsets (up to Core i7) joined by Dolby Home Theatre 4.1 for superior sound and AcerCloud for convenient personal media streaming. The company’s offering users the ability to configure it with up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 640, as well as a generous 2TB SATA hard disk. As far as optical options go, consumers can choose from a Blu-ray player or standard DVD drive. You’ll have to sit tight for this fella to head to market, but rest assured you should see it on retails shelves before year’s end — we hope. While you wait, why not check out our gallery below?

Toshiba’s CAMILEO line getting three new full HD camcorders

Toshiba took some time at IFA 2012 today to announce three new cameras in its CAMILEO line of full HD camcorders. Sticking with the trend of the line, all three of these cameras can record video in 1080p resolution, and each one is geared toward a different subset of users. As you can see from the image below, there all quite small as well, which means that portability probably isn’t going to be an issue.

First we have the CAMILEO S40, which is being marketed as a “pocketable” camcorder that still delivers when it comes to performance. It sports a pistol grip design, comes in four different colors (silver, turquoise, orange, purple), and features a 5x digital zoom that is helped along by electronic image stabilization. On the back we have a 3-inch LCD touchscreen that features an icon-based GUI, and this camera also comes equipped with CAMILEO’s Uploader Software so you can share what you’ve shot easily. Finally, the S40 comes with mini HDMI and micro USB ports, allowing you to connect it to your other devices and playback video on a larger screen.

Next up is the CAMILEO X150, which is a palm-held camcorder aimed at those who need to get an up-close shot while still maintaining 1080p quality. It features a 10x optical zoom, and allows users to snap pictures while recording video. It also comes equipped with smile detection and face detection, meaning that not only will your pictures be in-focus, but you also won’t be snapping pictures of awkward faces as often. Just like the S40, the X150 comes with a 3-inch LCD touchscreen, along with mini HDMI and micro USB ports for easy playback.

Wrapping up Toshiba’s triple reveal, we have the CAMILEO BW20, which is for those who need a camera that can withstand a few hits. It can handle falls from up to 1.5 meters, and is waterproof down to five meters for up to 30 minutes. It can record in low-light settings all the way down to 2lux, and comes with an anti-glare 2-inch LCD screen so you can review what you’ve shot even with the Sun bearing down on you. As with the cameras before it, this one also features mini HDMI and micro USB ports.

It’s also worth pointing out that all three of these cameras come equipped with an LED flashlight and a multi-card slot. There isn’t any pricing information on these camcorders yet, and Toshiba hasn’t announced a release date either, saying that they’ll be available in the UK starting in Q4 2012. Stay tuned, because we’ll have more details for you once Toshiba dishes more information.
