Best Buy Offering Free MiFi With iPad Purchase

Thumbnail image for ipad_mifi_best_buy.png

Probably a little late for the Christmas crowd, but 9 to 5 Mac managed to snag an early peak at a new Best Buy ad offering up a free MiFi with the purchase of an iPad. Pretty sweet deal, if you’re in the market for both of those things–you’ll save $130 off of Verizon’s asking price.

Of course, nothing is ever truly free, when it comes to mobile hardware–you’ll have to sign a two-year contract with either AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon. If you’re still down, you’ve got until January 2nd, to take advantage of the deal.

What is the Most Useless Gadget of 2010?

TV-Hat.jpg

It’s nearly the end of the year. There are two ways to go about this. We can either present you with a list of the year’s best gadgets, highlighting all of the wonderful innovations that have come out in the past year–or we can go the other way with it. I ask you this: which route sounds more fun?

With that in mind, we present to you the finalists for Gearlog’s first annual “Most Useless Gadget of the Year.” I did a quick informal tally and gathered together some candidates for the list, four in all. If you don’t see your (least) favorite on there, don’t worry, you can always fill it in on the poll or send me your candidate via Twitter (@bheater).

After the jump, a poll–and a little bit about each candidate.

Self Sterilizing Door Handle Keeps Your Hands Clean

Self-Sterilizing Door Handle

Did you know that the dirtiest part of a public bathroom is likely the door handle and not places like the toilet seat or the paper towel dispenser? It’s the one part of the bathroom that everyone touches – on their way in or out, regardless of whether they washed their hands. Some experts say you should grab an extra paper towel and use it to open the door when you’re finished washing your hands, but this concept self-sterilizing door handle from Yanko Design may make it unnecessary.
The handle uses a UV light inside the handle to kill any germs that might come to live on it. The light is on and the handle glows blue when the door is shut, but when you push the handle down to open the door, the UV lamp keeping the handle sterilized will turn itself off.
The handle is just a concept for now, and there’s no way to tell if it’ll ever see wide production, but it’s definitely a good idea that might make public restrooms a little more sanitary. It’s no excuse for not washing your hands, though.

Businesses Overwhelmingly Choosing Apple Tablets

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for ipadnytimes.jpg

Apple has completely dominated the consumer tablet space in the past year. In fact, by most accounts, the company more or less created the space. Before the creation of the iPad, such a thing seemed like little more than a pipedream. Tablets had long been the realm of very specific verticals.

While companies are introducing their own tablets by the boatload (only a tiny fraction of which have come to the market, of course), many have eschewed the prospect of direct competition with Apple, instead opting to target other markets–markets like business.

Things aren’t looking to rosy for the competition on that front, either. According to new numbers from analyst group ChangeWave, of the 14 percent of companies who plan to buy a tablet in the first quarter of next year, 78 percent plan to buy an Apple. Dell and Apple are tied for a distant second at nine percent each, HP has eight, and poor old Samsung is trailing behind at four.

Of those opting for a tablet, 73 percent use it for Internet access (that number seems a little low, actually…), 69 percent for checking e-mail, 67 percent for working outside the office. There’s been a pretty big jump for those businesses that are using the tablet as a “laptop replacement”–that number has risen 13 percent to 38.

A sign of things to come, perhaps?

The TimeCommand iPhone Dock Controls Other Gadgets Too

TimeCommand Dock

Some of us have a ton of electronic devices on our nightstand: phones in chargers, alarm clocks, media players, radios, lamps, and more. Imagine what life would be like if one gadget would charge your phone, wake you up in the morning, play music and even turn your light on or off based on a time you specify. That’s what you get with the TimeCommand docking station
Simply dock your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad on the top and use the mobile app to program the alarm, radio stations or playlists you want to wake up to, and if you have a lamp with an incandescent bulb, you can plug the lamp into the plug on the dock to have the TimeCommand turn the lamp on or off when you specify.
You can even tell the dock to slowly raise or lower the brightness for easier waking or sleeping, and it has battery backups so you’ll never miss an alarm. The TimeCommand will set you back $99.95 and is available in Apple retail stores now.

Daily Gift: Polaroid Instant Camera

instantcamera.jpg
This holiday season why not give a retro gift to bring back the good ol’ days? What was better than unwrapping your fist instant camera and running around snapping pictures of anything and everything and receiving the instant gratification when the photo popped immediately out? “Hey mom, look at this picture of the cat sleeping, the one of dad’s feet, and one super close to your face. Awesome, right?”
Well, instant is back! When you snap a picture with the Polaroid 300 Instant Camera, it shoots out a business card sized instant color photo. With four lighting settings and auto-flash, you should receive perfect photos every time.
If you want to be able capture the fun and immediately share the moment with a instant photo again, you can buy the camera in red, blue, or black on the Polaroid website for $89.99, film not included. Then you and your friends and family can “shake it like a Polaroid picture” all over again.

iPad 2 Will Feature Two Cameras (Rumor)

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for ipadnytimes.jpg

Honestly, I think most of us would be pretty surprised if the next generation iPad shipped without front and rear facing cameras. Apple has been pushing FaceTime in a big way since the launch of the iPhone 4, but let’s face it, if that technology is really going to break, it’s going to be on a screen like the iPad’s. Teleconferencing on the iPhone feels like a novelty–on the iPad’s nine inch display, I image it would feel a lot more like the future.

The latest set of rumored leaks confirm the technology. Third-party suppliers Genius Electronic Optical Co. Ltd. and Largan Precision Co. Ltd are confirming that the new iPad will, in fact, include two cameras for teleconferencing.

The list of rumors pulled together by Reuters also points to a new iPad that is “slimmer, lighter and [has] a better resolution display.”

Angry Birds, Facebook Top 2010 iPhone Apps

Angry Birds Peace Treaty

Apple today released its list of the most popular apps for the iPhone and iPad. Not surprisingly, Angry Birds and Facebook made it out on top this year. Facebook topped the list of free iPhone apps, followed by Angry Birds Lite (the demo version of the popular game), Words With Friends, Skype, and Tap Tap Revenge. The Weather Channel, Rock Band, and Microsoft’s Bing all made the top ten, as well.

Rovio’s popular bird slingshotting title topped the games-heavy paid iPhone app list, followed by Doodle Jump Skee-Ball, Bejeweled 2, and Fruit Ninja. Major League Baseball’s At Bat app was actually the highest grossing iPhone app of the year, followed by Angry Birds at number two.

Over on the iPad side, Apple’s Pages and iBooks topped the paid and free app lists, respectively. Angry Birds HD, Netflix, Pandora, Google, Kindle, and Wolfram Alpha all made the list, as well.

Car Gift: Car AC Power Supplies Cost Less, Include USB

Kensington-Duracell-inverters-440.jpg

For as little as $30, you can equip your car with the 120-volt power that should have come standard. Get the Kensington Power Inverter with USB Power Port, $35 street, if you want compact size and convenience. It provides 75 watts of AC power (90 watts peak) plus a USB jack for phone or iPod charging. The Kensington inverter plugs directly into the car’s 12-volt socket (no power cable) and is so small and light (0.3 pounds) that it will barely be noticed in a business traveler’s carry-on bag.
