It’s been more than a year since Samsung released its Android powered Galaxy Camera. And despite our initial skepticism, we were actually impressed that the merger of a mobile device and point-and-shoot camera was so well executed. The weird thing was wonderful
I am not quite sure what the folks over at @evleaks are trying to pull off here. Sure, they have had a fair number of leaks in the past that involved press images of a selected device before they hit the market, but with this, titled “First test shot from second-generation Galaxy Camera (EK-GC200)”, has proven nothing at all. In fact, it is a rather sad “leak”, since the image quality of the shot shown is nothing to shout about. Heck, for all you know, it could be taken by any other random device without having to focus on the object.
Assuming that the above image was actually snapped using the second generation Galaxy Camera from Samsung with the model number EK-GC200, it does not amount to much, right? It would also be pretty difficult to lump this under “a picture speaks a thousand words”, as I am rather at a loss for words actually in describing just what the second generation Galaxy Camera is able to deliver. Hopefully it will come with the kind of hardware upgrades over its predecessor (which we reviewed at the end of last year) in the past one year, introducing the relevant kind of improvements that one would expect. Samsung chief alludes to ‘mirrorless’ Galaxy Camera sequel coming June 20th
Posted in: Today's ChiliWe had a feeling the little Galaxy S4 Zoom wouldn’t be the final word in Samsung’s Android-powered camera lineup for 2013, and now it seems that a truer successor to the high-spec Galaxy Camera is indeed on its way. As quoted by the Korea Times, JK Shin has confirmed that a “mirrorless camera that runs on Google’s Android software” will launch at the company’s forthcoming event in London on June 20th, which will likely also show off other Galaxy-branded products. Assuming no mistranslations have gotten in the way, the reference to a “mirrorless” camera implies the existence of an interchangeable lens system, suggesting that the new Galaxy Camera might be more akin to Samsung’s NX range of cameras than to its cheaper point-and-shoots. If that’s the case, then this could be a significant upgrade in terms of sensor size and image quality, but at this point there’s still very little we can say for sure.

If you happen to own one of the Samsung Galaxy Camera devices that run on the Android operating system, then you might be pleased to hear that this particular shooter has begun to receive a software update from early on this morning, especially if it happens to run on Verizon’s network. This particular new update was first spotted by the folks over at Droid Life, where it weighs in at a rather massive 180MB, so you might want to fall back on a Wi-Fi network to get the job done instead of using a 3G connection. We have no idea yet as to what this particular software update contains though.
From what we do know, however, the Samsung Galaxy Camera will continue to run on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean even after the upgrade, so you can be sure that this particular software update has nothing to do with the operating system. Neither Verizon nor Samsung has rolled out additional information on the software, either, so we await with bated breath on an official press release.

Samsung has announced a more affordable version of its Galaxy Camera, a digital camera powered by Android 4.1 which offers higher the same communications and apps that modern Android smartphones enjoy, but with higher-end imaging capabilities. The first version of the Samsung Galaxy Camera could connect over 3G, a powerful but expensive option since you needed a monthly data plan. This second model only connects through WIFI and represents, in theory, substantial savings over the MSRP of the 3G version. (more…)

It seems that the Samsung Galaxy Camera has proven itself to be a reasonable success on its own, and here we are with whispers that there is a second generation in the pipeline that ought to have users more than happy to dive for an upgrade. It is rumored that the second generation Galaxy Camera will carry the model number EK-GC110, and apart from that, very little else is known about it. Let me correct my stance – nothing else is known about it.
Sure, there is a tiny ray of hope that the Galaxy Camera (EK-GC110) could eventually be unveiled officially at the upcoming Mobile World Congress that is happening just next month, but chances are it will not happen then. Who wants to place their bets that the upcoming Galaxy Camera EK-GC110 will remain a Wi-Fi only model, similar to how Samsung has churned out a number of their Galaxy tablets in the past? Only one way to find out – play the patience card, and hope that Samsung throws something favorable our way in the near future!
