Samsung Galaxy Note III hopes dashed: Plastic body and no flexible display tipped

It seems that Samsung will be sticking with their usual ways with the third iteration of the Galaxy Note. While it’s been rumored that the phablet-style smartphone would sport a new aluminum design, as well as a flexible AMOLED display, it’s been recently tipped that the Korean company will stick with its plastic design used for the Galaxy S 4, and will keep a solid glass (or plastic) front for the screen.

If this turns out to be true, we wouldn’t be too surprised, as flexible displays certainly aren’t ready for the mass market quite yet, and we’re pretty sure that if Samsung wanted to give one of their devices an aluminum shell, it would’ve been the Galaxy S 4. Instead, the company is said to be sticking with its usual slimy-esque plastic.

In fact, the Galaxy Note III is said to have a very similar design to that of the Galaxy S 4, including the new silver band that wraps around the edge of the smartphone. As for other design changes to the new Galaxy Note, it’s said to sport a thinner bezel in order to pack in a larger screen size without making the device bigger, as it’s already quite gargantuan.

As for specs of the Galaxy Note III, we’re possibly looking at an ARM Cortex-A15 octa-core processor clocked at 1.9GHz, as well as version with a Cortex-A7 quad-core chip clocked at 1.9GHz, or an in-house Exynos chip. There’s also said to be a 13MP camera on the back (just like with the Galaxy S 4) with a 2MP front-facer. There’s also expected to be an enormous 6-inch display to make it even larger than the previous Galaxy Note, but we’ll see if that actually happens.

So, it looks like all you have to do to envision what the Galaxy Note III will look like, is to take a look a look at the Galaxy S 4 and imagine it with a screen size that’s roughly an inch larger. Of course, the Galaxy S 4 most likely will cater to most people, but for those that want a larger screen for better productivity, it seems the Galaxy Note III will be your best bet at this point. Apple Won’t Release Large Phone Until Next Year [Analyst]

Telus Samsung Galaxy Note Receives Jelly Bean Update

Telus Samsung Galaxy Note Receives Jelly Bean UpdateTelus’ Samsung Galaxy Note is finally on the receiving end of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, which has been a long time in coming actually. This is nice to know, considering how the mobile carrier in Canada has promised the availability of this particular update not too long ago, so if you happen to own the device and are on Telus, then good for you.

There is a “How To” page on the Telus website, where it mentioned that this particular update will be available both over the air (OTA) as well as via the Kies software. Obviously, if one were to choose, the first option, that is getting the update Over The Air would be the easier one, as all you need to do is head on to Settings, followed by About device in order to check for the Android version, and you will then know whether the update is made ready for you. However, if you find that the update is not available over the air just yet, that means you can always take the other route of using the Samsung Kies software for Windows or Mac OS.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note Jelly Bean update finally gets the green light

For those still wielding the original Samsung Galaxy Note on AT&T, you’ll be pleased to know that the phablet-style smartphone has finally been updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, allowing users of the 5.3-inch handset to take advantage of Google Now, improved notifications, and performance enhancements with Project Butter.

Galaxy-Note-ATT-09SG

The update should be available now, although AT&T didn’t mention how fast the roll out would be happening. Although, all users can download the update on their PC and install on their Galaxy Note device through Samsung Kies. AT&T didn’t mention anything about being able to receive the update over-the-air, so you’re best bet seems to be to go the manual route.

On a different but still slightly-related note, the Verizon Galaxy Note II also received an update today, receiving a bump up to Android 4.1.2, as well as a handful of updates to apps that now support Samsung’s Multi Window mode, which allows you to split-screen certain apps. The update also includes support for Isis Mobile Wallet, as well as fixes alarm clock issues.

The AT&T Galaxy Note sports a 5.3-inch with a 1280 x 800 resolution, while its successor rocks a larger 5.5-inch display with a 720p resolution display. The Galaxy Note rocks a dual-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz, while the Galaxy Note II packs in a faster quad-core chip clocked at a quick 1.6GHz.

AT&T Galaxy Note Gets Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean As Well

AT&T Galaxy Note Gets Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean As WellEarlier today, we talked about how the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from Verizon Wireless was on the receiving end of the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update, well, it seems that AT&T does not want to be left behind in the eternal war between all mobile carriers in the US, and from today onwards, Samsung’s Kies servers will also deliver Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean to AT&T customers who are using the first version of the smartphone/tablet hybrid in the market. Of course, with an update to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, this means one would be able to enjoy a slew of new features, with the main one being the introduction of Popup capabilities for notes, video and browsing.

Strangely enough, there was no mention of Google Now in AT&T’s changelog, as that is normally the first thing that would see mention in most Jelly Bean updates. Ah well, better late than never no? Of course, you can always make a beeline for the support page of AT&T’s Galaxy Note to check out the instructions on downloading and updating the software on your precious i717 (that is its codename) to give it some Jelly Bean goodness. Whoever said that good things do not come to those who wait?

Samsung Galaxy Note III tipped in triple prototype phase

Yesterday we saw what was believed to be Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 in a leaked image showing a larger display than its Note 2 predecessor, as well as a host of specs. While the image was alluring, it was later discovered that the featured phone was not, in fact, the Galaxy Note 3, but instead a ZOPO ZP950 Android handset with a 5.7-inch display and no Samsung branding to be seen. That’s not all, however, with a source saying that Samsung does have three Galaxy Note 3 prototypes floating around.

Samsung-Galaxy-Note-3-Prototypes-Leaked

Of the three alleged prototypes, the source says there is one with a design inspired by the GALAXY S 4 flagship handset, another with a completely new design (breath of fresh air and all that), and a third that features a flexible display, which is the one that sounds most intriguing. The prototype that draws its design from the S 4 is featured in the concept above.

Different rumors have been popping up lately regarding the Galaxy Note 3, such as one that hit the Web a few weeks ago claiming the device will sport a new design, which is what one of the three prototypes at Samsung are rumored to have. Specifically, word has it the design will utilize metal in the place of plastic. Such a claim automatically brings one around to thoughts of the HTC One.

The rumored new design and GALAXY S 4-inspired design aside, the third concerning a flexible display design is the most interesting of the three. This seems to match up with a rumor we heard earlier this month that the Note 3 will feature a super-durable plastic display that is harder to crack than current offerings. For now, all remain the stuff of rumors, but if one of them proves to be true, we’ll know in September when it is believed Samsung will launch the device.

Samsung Galaxy Note III tip claims plastic replacing glass display

We’ve heard ramblings of the the rumored Galaxy Note III in the recent past, and today’s rumor takes the claims a bit further. It’s said that Samsung‘s next Galaxy Note phablet-style handset will do away with traditional glass for plastic in order to make the screen more robust and less prone to crack when dropped.

sideflip-580x429-1

According to SamMobile, the Galaxy Note III will sport the first-ever plastic-lined OLED display, and it’s said to be revealed at IFA 2013 later this August, with a release date sometime in Q4 2013. As for screen size, we’ve heard that Samsung will go for the 6.3-inch variety, although other sources have pointed to a more manageable 5.99-inch display.

The supposed OLED plastic display will be extremely lightweight and thinner than traditional screens, which would make way for a bigger battery or an overall thinner device. And since it’s plastic, it’s said that the screen will hold up a lot better to drops than glass would. Despite the advancements of Gorilla Glass, it still shatters pretty easily when dropped at the right angle.

This would make the Galaxy Note III Samsung’s first all-plastic device — that is, if Samsung decides to continue with its tradition of plastic-laden shells for its devices. We’re not sure how much of an impact this will have on the user experience, but glass has always been a premium option compared to plastic when it comes to touch devices.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 Hands-on and Unboxing

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is about to hit stores in the United States, and with it, Samsung’s next push for a new display size attached to next-generation smart pen abilities. This device is essentially the larger wi-fi-only version of what we’ll be seeing with the Samsung GALAXY S 4, hovering abilities and all. It might not have the same processor, and it might not be connected to mobile data, but it’s certainly keeping with the friendly theme.

Here with the Galaxy Note 8.0 you’ve got an 8-inch display that’s both bright and relatively sharp, 1280 x 800 pixel resolution working with TFT LCD technology and a connection to the newest in new S-Pen technology. The entire tablet measures in at 210.8 x 135.9 x 7.95 mm regardless of which version you’ve got while the weight will be ringing in at 340g for the wifi version (that being the one we’ve got here) and just 5g more for the 3G or LTE iteration (coming soon!)

This machine continues the tradition begun with the original Samsung Galaxy Note, employing a built-in “S-Pen” device that connects wirelessly to your tablet. You’ll be able to hover over bits and pieces of your everyday Android experience to see previews or zoom-in, you can draw pictures galore in a lovely assortment of ways, and you can write all the notes you like. This device has all the features of the previous Galaxy Note devices and more – the closest you’ll get to this experience outside this experience is in the Samsung Galaxy Note II.

Below you’ll see a set of three basic benchmark tests, each of them run without this device’s “power save” mode activated. You’ll find that with this display size and processor, the Galaxy Note 8.0 should be more than powerful enough to handle your everyday activities, be they gaming, productivity, or simple web browsing.

This device works with a 5 megapixel camera on its back, a 1.3 megapixel camera on its front, and is just large enough to feel a tiny bit awkward using while capturing photographs. We’ll have photo examples for you later this week when we’ve posted the full review – the same goes for more detail on the software included here, and battery tests as well. Here we’ve got an additional gallery of up-close-and-personal photographs of the device for you to enjoy.
