Samsung Galaxy Round Sales Reportedly Around 10,000

Samsung Galaxy Round Sales Reportedly Around 10,000It was just last month that Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Round, a device which shared some specs of the Galaxy Note 3, with the main difference being its display which instead of being flat like most displays are, was curved instead, creating a rather unique design and feel to the device. Safe to say that was probably the first smartphone we’ve seen released to the market that sports a curved display (LG’s G Flex came in second not too long after) so it can’t be blamed if consumers are a little apprehensive about its usefulness. After all why buy a curved display when its flatter sibling is cheaper and has slightly better specs, right?

Well according to reports, it seems that to date Samsung has only managed to sell 10,000 units of the Galaxy Round. Once again we can’t say we’re too surprised that the Galaxy Round isn’t met with the same enthusiasm that Samsung’s other phones have received, namely due to it costing a bit more and also because at the moment, curved displays feel more like a proof of concept rather than actually adding any real value. These figures are not official so there is a chance that Samsung might have sold more (as with the case of the Galaxy Gear) than is being reported, but what do you guys think? Is 10,000 a believable figure?

Apple Reportedly Working On Two New iPhones With Curved Screens

Apple Reportedly Working On Two New iPhones With Curved Screens

Its still too early to say if curved displays are going to make it in the mainstream smartphone market. Both Samsung and LG have come out with their contenders, but it remains to be seen if the Galaxy Round or G Flex are ever launched globally. A new report from Bloomberg suggests that Apple might want in on the curved bandwagon as well. Apparently Cupertino is working on two new iPhones, with 4.7 and 5.5 inch curved screens. These iPhones are expected to be released in the second half of 2014, according to people who’re familiar with the company’s plans.

That’s not all, it is also claimed that these new iPhones will have sensors which will be able to determine if pressure being applied on the display is light or heavy. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that Apple is experimenting with iPhones that have larger displays. In fact, it is widely believed at this point in time that the next iPhone is going to have a larger display. This is also not the first time that Apple has been rumored to be working on curved displays, back in 2011 it was believed that the iPhone 5 might have a curved display, but it didn’t. So as is the case with all rumors, its best to take this one with a grain of salt as well.

Samsung Galaxy Round Coming To The US For $1,130

Samsung Galaxy Round Coming To The US For $1,130Remember the Samsung Galaxy Round that was launched not too long ago? Well if you’re in the market for a unique looking handset, you might be interested to learn that the Samsung Galaxy Round will be making its way into the US after all. The handset was originally released in South Korea, home of Samsung, and there was no mention if it would make its way stateside. Given the prototype nature of the device, it is understandable that Samsung might merely be looking to test the waters as opposed to performing a full scale launch. It looks like a full scale launch will not be happening yet as the handset will be sold through Negri Electronics, a third-party retailer who has managed to get their hands on the device.

As the Galaxy Round was meant to be a limited production device, don’t expect more stock if and when they stock out, but for those who are interested in owning the rather uniquely curved device, pre-orders for the handset have begun and will set you back a whopping $1,129.50. That is a very expensive price tag that Negri Electronics is asking for, but it seems to be in line with what an Australian retailer is asking as well, so we guess that would be the market price for the device, and the price one would have to pay to be an early adopter. So, anyone planning on pre-ordering their Samsung Galaxy Round?

NJIT scientists patent flexible carbon nanotube battery

Researchers at the New Jersey Institute of Technology have invented and patented a battery so flexible that it can be rolled up and placed in the trunk of your car to power it, reports Phys.org. The invention’s many applications run the gamut from large-scale machinery to flexible smartphones. This could go a long way towards […]

Samsung Reportedly Gearing Up To Mass Produce Curved Batteries

Samsung Reportedly Gearing Up To Mass Produce Curved BatteriesIt wasn’t too long ago that Samsung announced the Galaxy Round, making it the first smartphone with a curved display for 2013. The handset is based around the hardware specs of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, although the key difference would be its design (which is curved, obviously), and its battery size with is set at 2,800mAh versus the Galaxy Note 3’s 3,200mAh. We’re not sure what’s with the different battery size, but presumably the design of the Galaxy Round had something to do with it. In any case this also pales in comparison to LG’s own curved smartphone offering, the LG G Flex which features a rather respectable 3,500mAh battery, along with some pretty cool self-healing abilities.

Apparently this is possible thanks to a curved battery design used by LG that allowed them to fit in a larger battery, versus the Galaxy Round that apparently still uses a flat battery design, to that end there are reports suggesting that Samsung is currently gearing up to mass produce curved batteries which we can only assume will aid in batteries with larger capacities that could find its way into future curved devices by Samsung. At the moment the Galaxy Round is expected to see limited production, although it has since been released in the South Korean market. What do you guys think? Are curved devices the way of the future, or is it merely a gimmick?

    Samsung Galaxy Round Commercial Released

Earlier in October, Samsung took the wraps off a new device dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Round, which was essentially the Galaxy Note 3 albeit with a curved display, allowing for a rather unique design with some interesting possibilities in terms of features and use. While the device has yet to make its way to the masses outside of South Korea, Samsung has since released a commercial for the upcoming device which basically highlights its uniquely curved display and shows off some of its features in the process. While admittedly the device is interesting in its own right, we’re not sure if the curved display is actually more functional rather than novel, but given that the handset is apparently a prototype-like device that will see limited production, we guess this is more like Samsung testing out curved displays in the market as opposed to releasing a full-fledged device.

As it stands the handset is estimated to cost around $1,000 in South Korea and there is no word if Samsung plans to release it worldwide. For those unfamiliar, the Galaxy Round will feature a 5.7” Super AMOLED display with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage, a 2,800mAh battery and will run on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. In any case if you have a minute to spare, you can check out the Samsung Galaxy Round commercial in the video above.

This Week On The TC Gadgets Podcast: Windows 8.1, The Kindle Fire HDX, And Curved Display Smartphones

That’s right. It’s Gadgets Podcast time once again, and all I can say is TGIF.

Here are some of our topics this week:

Who’s already upgraded to Windows 8.1? John had no trouble with it but Matt seems to be lost.

Meanwhile, we’ve been testing out the new Amazon Kindle Fire HDX, and we all pretty much agree that it’s a fine media-centric tablet and a perfect gift for a mother-in-law.

And finally, we discuss the newest trend in smartphones: a curved display. (Here’s Nokia’s concept for a bending display smartphone, which is many years away from commercialization, and also completely different from the curved displays we’re seeing out of Samsung and LG).

Oh, and we’ll be launching our holiday gift guide in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for that.

We chat about all this and more in this week’s episode of the TC Gadgets Podcast, featuring John Biggs, Matt Burns and Jordan Crook.

    Enjoy!

Samsung Galaxy Round Is Reportedly A Prototype Device In Limited Production

Samsung Galaxy Round Is Reportedly A Prototype Device In Limited Production

Over the past few weeks we heard rumors that a couple of new smartphones with flexible displays are going to be launched in the market soon. LG was rumored to be working on one, and so was Samsung. The latter was the first one to bring its device to the market, called Samsung Galaxy Round. As yet, Samsung hasn’t said when or if this device is going to be launched in the U.S. The folks at Sammobile claim to have heard from an insider at the company that this device is a prototype which will only be produced in limited quantities, this could mean that getting your hands on a smartphone with a flexible display just might prove to be a bit challenging.

The insider reportedly says that Samsung has developed this device to test curved OLED displays, and that it is going to limit production, so much so that the Galaxy Round might even be in short supply in Samsung’s native South Korea. Going by the insider’s claims, it is possible that the Galaxy Round might not be launched outside of South Korea at all. The device releases in the country this week for roughly $1,000. So if this is a test run of sorts, does Samsung has something under the wraps, a smartphone with a curved display that could perhaps be launched in more markets? Time will tell.

The Galaxy Round Is Just a Prototype--But Samsung Will Sell It Anyway

We now live in a world in which you can buy a smartphone with a curved glass screen, with Samsung’s Galaxy Round hitting South Korean stores. But, in the eyes of its creators, it’s just a prototype. Still, whack it on the shelves, eh?

Samsung Galaxy Round Releases In South Korea This Week

Samsung Galaxy Round Releases In South Korea This Week

Over the past couple of weeks there was a lot of speculation about Samsung releasing a smartphone with a curved display. Earlier this week we saw a picture of said smartphone leak online, before the company officially announced it as the Samsung Galaxy Round. The company hasn’t said when this smartphone will make its way over to the U.S., we expected that it will first release it in its native South Korea, and that’s exactly what its going to do later this week. Samsung Galaxy Round goes on sale in South Korea this week for around 1,089,000 won, which translates into approximately US$1000.

It remains to be seen if Galaxy Round will carry this price over to the U.S., if and when it launches here. Given the fact that this smartphone has a 5.7 inch full HD curved Super Flexible AMOLED display, its not like Samsung would have priced it relative to the usual crop of smartphones. Apart from the curved display, which is without a doubt its selling point, the Galaxy Round has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage, a 2,800mAh battery, microSD card slot, Android 4.3 and a lot more. Galaxy Round will soon have a competitor in the curved display arena, LG is reportedly prepping its own smartphone with a flexible display, renders of which were leaked just yesterday.
