iPhone 5 VS Samsung Galaxy S3 VS Galaxy S4 In “Torture” Test

With the competition between Apple and Samsung being extremely fierce, not just in terms of products, but in the courtrooms as well, we expect that many are wondering just how well the Samsung Galaxy S4 holds up against Apple’s flagship smartphone, the iPhone 5. Given that they both run different operating systems and therefore cater to different types of users and different needs, we guess one way to compare the smartphones would in terms of durability. Is the iPhone 5 more durable than the Samsung Galaxy S4? Well that’s what the folks at insurance firm, SquareTrade, decided to find out.

Basically SquareTrade pitted several devices against each other, namely the iPhone 5 versus the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S3. The phones were put through several tests, such as being dropped, skidded across a table, and dunked underwater. The tests were designed to roughly simulate the typical accidents that one might encounter in the real life with their smartphones. Either way if you have a couple of minutes to spare and would like to see all three phones being put through their paces, check it out in the video above. Alternatively if you’d like to see which phone might be better for you in terms of hardware, performance, and software, you can check out our reviews of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5 to learn more.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Bootloader Arrives Locked

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Bootloader Arrives LockedAccording to Steve Kondik, whom you might be familiar with if you happen to dabble with CyanogenMod, he confirmed that the AT&T version of the recently available Samsung Galaxy S4 would arrive locked right out of the box. Of course, what does that mean for the ordinary user? Basically, it translates to those developers having to take a whole lot more time before they can roll out custom ROMs on the handset. Still, this locked bootloader is definitely not unbreakable by any means, and it is just a matter of time before it is cracked.

According to Steve, “Yep, it’s confirmed. The AT&T S4 authenticates the recovery and boot images before executing them. I can’t see what AT&T has to possibly gain from this. GSM and LTE aren’t magical, tethering is controllable on the server side, and theft-of-services is not possible from the application processor side (or even from the modem side as far as I know). The same device is available on every carrier, so it’s not an exclusivity issue either. The modem processor has always been locked, and the casual user doesn’t want to mess with that part anyway. Samsung has always been developer-friendly, so I am guessing their hand was forced.”

Samsung Parodies “Gangnam Style” To Promote The Galaxy S4 In India

Most of you have probably heard of the popular song, Gangnam Style, sung by South Korean singer Psy. Interestingly it seems that Samsung has decided to try and promote their latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S4, in India by parodying the song and having the lyrics changed to reflect the phone’s features, and replacing “Gangnam Style” with “Samsung Style”. The song was sung and performed by a Bollywood actor in India, Ranveer Singh, where he was backed up by a troupe of dancers adorned in sequins. We’re not sure if this was supposed to be funny, or a serious attempt by Samsung to attempt to capitalize on Psy’s record breaking Gangnam Style song, but a part of the lyrics go, “If you like the S3, than this phone is even better. It has an HD screen and it’s just a lot slimmer,” sung to the tune and style of Psy’s song. We have to say it looks and feels a bit awkward, not to mention the whole Gangnam Style thing is probably extremely played out, but what do you guys think?

Samsung’s Preloaded Apps Take Up Half Of 16GB Galaxy S4 Storage

Samsungs Preloaded Apps Take Up Half Of 16GB Galaxy S4 Storage

Amid reports of shipments being delayed due to unprecedented demand, after what seemed like an excruciating wait, Samsung’s latest flagship Android smartphone is now available in the U.S. Some of the major carriers in the country are offering this device to their customers, which comes with 16, 32 and 64GB storage options. The cost goes up with internal storage, and if you’ve your sights set on the 16GB one, keep in mind that almost half of its storage is taken up by apps that Samsung has preloaded in it.

There will be a number of apps that will come preloaded on the Samsung Galaxy S4. These apps, among various others, include ChatOn messaging client, S Health and S Travel. A report indicates that these apps take up 45% of the onboard storage in 16GB Galaxy S4, leaving the user with just 8.82GB of free storage right out of the box. The work around for this is either to splurge on a model with higher storage, or make use of the external memory expansion capability through microSD cards. The Galaxy S4 supports external expansion up to 64GB.

Samsung Shares Design Philosophy Behind The Galaxy S4

For the uninitiated, we probably have no idea what goes on behind the design process when creating a new product. For most of us we probably think it’s an easy job, although in reality there’s a lot more behind the process than we think and if you’re wondering what the designers were thinking when they designed the Samsung Galaxy S4, think no more. The South Korean company has released a video as part of its “design story” series in which Samsung shares some of their design process, revealing what the designers were thinking while creating the company’s latest flagship phone. Of course a lot of flowery words are used in the process, some of which may or may not be an exaggeration, but in any case if you’re a Samsung fan and you want to “understand” where your phone came from, this video is probably for you.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Teardown Confirms It Is Easier To Repair

Samsung Galaxy S4 Teardown Confirms It Is Easier To Repair

The folks over at iFixit regularly post detailed teardowns of the most latest gadgets. Naturally, the Samsung Galaxy S4 was to go under their knife as well, and so it has. Their teardown reveals that the device is actually much more easier to repair than its counterparts such as iPhone 5 and HTC One. It is this way because the Galaxy S4 has a battery that can be removed and standard screws, that once unscrewed, give access to the internals. The S4 may lack design aesthetics of its competitors, but it is easier to repair, this could be an added plus for prospective customers who like to pop open their smartphones once in a while.

The internal specifications have already been talked about at length, you can catch up on all of the information by reading our Samsung Galaxy S4 review. Inside, crucial components such as the processor, RAM and storage can be found alongside a host of sensors. These include the temperature and humidity sensors as well as the Air Gesture and Air View sensors that are placed on either side of the earpiece. Head on over to iFixit if you want to see more of Samsung’s latest flagship from the inside.

Samsung GALAXY S 4 innards spilled in iFixit teardown

We’ve already seen a couple of teardowns of Samsung’s new GALAXY S 4, but that didn’t stop the folks at iFixit from dissecting the phone either. What they find on the inside isn’t too surprising: some plastic, some silicon, and a bit of electronics. However, the teardown reveals that Samsung made the GALAXY S 4 an easy repair.

s4-teardown

The outside isn’t too different from the Galaxy S III, so we’re certainly curious as to what changed on the inside. The back cover pops off easily, allowing you to replace the battery with ease. Further done, though, are the main guys of the phone, which are separated with 11 screws that come right off.

The only real part that takes some difficulty is the display, which is glued into the frame, and the glass and LCD are fused together. Other than that, all of the internal components are modular, which means they can be replaced individually rather than having to replace the entire unit if one thing breaks.

iFixit gave the GALAXY S 4 a repairability score of 8 out of 10, which is pretty good for a flagship handset these days. They did note that while most of the parts are modular, they’re glued in place, which means you’ll need some tools in order to dig them out, but the only real concern with the phone was the fused-in display, which requires a complete disassembly to replace.

Samsung GALAXY S 4 tipped with rugged makeover in July

As more companies become more aware of the build quality of their smartphones, the more likely we are to see tougher devices come to the market. It’s reported that Samsung is working on another version of the GALAXY S 4 that is said to be waterproof and dust proof, but will sport the same design as the company’s current flagship model.

samsung-gs4

According to the Wall Street Journal, the rugged version of the GALAXY S 4 is said to arrive sometime in July, and as of right now the phone is being dubbed the GALAXY S 4 Active, but it’s possible that the name could change eventually. The launch of this phone is said to come shortly after the rumored release of a new 8-inch tablet in June.

The tablet is said to be Galaxy-branded and will fit between Samsung’s 7-inch and 10-inch models already on the market, although the company just release the Galaxy Note 8.0 earlier this month (read our full review here). It’s the company’s only 8-inch variant, so it could be possible that this rumored tablet will simply be a lower-cost option.

As for the GALAXY S 4 Active, we’re sure many people will be worried that Samsung will butcher the sleek design theme that the Galaxy S line has had, but it’s said that Samsung will attempt to keep the design unchanged, possibly using nano waterproof coating. We’ve also heard rumors recently that Samsung will be using plastic screens on the Galaxy Note III instead of glass to make the device shatterproof, so it’s possible that they’re thinking about doing the same for the Active.
