Galaxy S5 First To Support PayPal Fingerprint Payment Authorization

Galaxy S5 First To Support PayPal Fingerprint Payment Authorization

On April 11th the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be released in more than 100 countries around the world. Owners of Samsung’s latest flagship will be able to do something with their new device that they can’t do with any other, authorize PayPal payments using their fingerprints. Apple may have reignited the interest in fingerprint sensors, but its only good for authorizing purchases on iTunes and unlocking the iPhone 5s for now. Galaxy S5 goes above an beyond, being the first commercial implementation of an authorization protocol developed by the FIDO Alliance, which counts Microsoft, Google, Lenovo, BlackBerry, MasterCard and PayPal as members.

To start authorizing PayPal payments using the fingerprint sensor on Galaxy S5, users first have to go through a short setup process. It basically registers the device’s identity based on its cryptographic chip and then links the user’s fingerprint to their PayPal account. Once this is up and running, PayPal only asks for a fingerprint swipe when a payment needs to be authorized. Generally it asks for a log-in, and will continue to do so on devices that don’t support this protocol.

The protocol has been designed to never let the fingerprint record leave the device. What it does instead if use the sensor’s output to generate cryptographic keys which are then combined with keys from the device’s cryptographic chip to create a new key. This key can’t be used to copy the fingerprint used to make it.

So far the Galaxy S5 is the only consumer device that supports PayPal’s FIDO-based authorization system. PayPal hasn’t said if there are upcoming devices in the pipeline that will support the system as well.

Galaxy S5 Zoom Purported Picture Appears Online

Galaxy S5 Zoom Purported Picture Appears Online

Samsung has a penchant for launching several variants of its flagship smartphone. Come April 11th the Samsung Galaxy S5 is going to be released in more than 100 countries. A couple of upcoming variants have already been rumored, such as Galaxy S5 mini and the Galaxy S5 Zoom. Today a purported picture of the Galaxy S5 Zoom has appeared online. Rumor has it that the device might actually be called Galaxy K Zoom.

If that really is true, then Samsung would be moving away from the naming convention that it debuted with Galaxy S4 Zoom. A similar variant of 2013 flagship was also released last month, the main idea behind this variant is to offer a much better imaging experience, even if that means opting for not so spectacular hardware specifications.

Rumored specifications for Galaxy S5 Zoom include a 1.6GHz quadcore or 1.4GHz Samsung Exynos 5 hexacore processor with ARM Mali-T624 graphics. It may have a 4.8-inch display and 2GB RAM. The Galaxy S5 Zoom might come with Android 4.4.2 KitKat pre-installed.

Evidently the pièce de résistance on this variant will be its camera. Word on the street is that it packs a 20 megapixel rear camera with 10x optical zoom as well as a Xenon flash. Its predecessor, the Galaxy S4 Zoom, had a 16 megapixel camera, so at least that’s an improvement. Samsung hasn’t officially confirmed when or if it intends to launch this variant. [Image via KZoom]

Samsung Galaxy S5 Is Surprisingly Durable In Drop Test

While Samsung might be boasting about the Galaxy S5’s IP67 rating which makes it both water resistant and dustproof, they did not mention anything about durability, but then again the Galaxy S5 was not designed to be a rugged phone so we can only assume that if it were to be dropped or run over by a car, you’d probably have to go get yourself a new one.

That being said, the folks over at TechSmartt have decided to put the Galaxy S5 through a drop test and compare it again the Samsung Galaxy S4, its predecessor. Now both phones are made from plastic, although in the case of the Galaxy S5, it features a textured back similar to the Galaxy Note 3 albeit with a different feel, so there’s nothing about the phone that would make it more rugged. Samsung Galaxy S5 Found To Have One Of The Best Displays [Report]

Samsung Galaxy S5 Found To Have One Of The Best Displays [Report]If there is one thing Samsung is known for it would be their AMOLED displays. They are typically very bright and vibrant, although some have criticized Samsung for its AMOLED displays as they do tend to be oversaturated, but then again some people do like that look and if Samsung’s success is anything to go by, many don’t seem to mind it at all.

So with the Galaxy S5, how does the AMOLEd display hold up? In a recent report by DisplayMate’s Dr. Raymond M. Soneira, he has found that the Galaxy S5 has the best performing smartphone display that he has ever tested and that Samsung has managed to raise the bar by a notch. (more…)

Samsung Galaxy S5 Has a Built In Baby Crying Detector in Case Your Ears Are Broken

Any new parent develops the ability to hear a baby cry no matter what they are doing. You could be cutting tile with a 50hp saw while a jet taxies in the background and if the baby cries, you hear them. Once the second kid rolls around you don’t even get up when the baby pukes on you. A new feature has turned up on the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone that helps parent hear their baby that could be useful if you have any hearing issues.

    gs5magnify

The feature is called the Baby Crying Detector and for it to work, you’ll also need a Galaxy Gear smartwatch. With the S5 and the Gear synced, you leave the phone within one meter of the baby. When the baby cries, the phone will vibrate and send an alert to the Gear watch. That way you know the baby is awake.

Samsung wisely warns you not to use this feature in lieu of actually watching your baby. I can’t think of too many parents these days that can be away from their smartphone games and social apps like Facebook long enough to leave the phone in the baby’s room.
