Apple Halts Samsung Galaxy Tab Launch in Australia

As part of the ongoing lawsuit between Samsung and Apple, the launch of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been delayed in Australia. A court injunction has been won by Apple which will prevent Samsung from selling the tablet “until [Samsung] wins court approval or the lawsuit is resolved,” according to a report by Bloomberg.

The lawsuit started in the US in April, and has Apple accusing Samsung of ripping of the iPhone and the iPad in look and feel. The evidence is hard to contradict. Show one of Samsung’s recent touch-screen handsets to a layperson and they’ll probably mistake it for an iPhone.

Not only has Apple successfully halted the launch of the Tab 10.1, but Samsung has agreed to supply Apple with three examples of the tablet at least a week before any future launch date. This is necessary as the Australian Tab 10.1 will differ from the U.S model. Unless it looks like an Etch-a-Sketch, though, it’s pretty hard to imagine that Apple will give it the go-ahead.

By the time this spat finally works its way through the courts, it’s likely we will have forgotten about it. But what seems clear right now is that Apple is currently winning, likely thanks to the obviousness of Samsung’s rip-offs. If the Korean tech giant is to move forward with its Android phones and tablets, it’s going to have to invent some of its own.

Still yearning to find out when the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 will be released worldwide? Aside from Sammy’s previously announced September release for the Nordic areas, there’s been no other official word on when the rest of us can get our mitts on one — not to mention that a month’s time has passed since the AT&T-banded 3G Galaxy Tab 8.9 hit the FCC. It appears that we’ll know more soon though, as Samsung’s apparently slipped out a new “app” that serves as a demo Retail Mode for the upcoming slate. Reportedly, once the store mode is downloaded from Samsung Apps and installed, using the password “5444” will grant you the access needed to get it running on a current Galaxy Tab. You’ll find a video of the TouchWiz filled demo after the break, but don’t get to excited yet; it’s running on the 10.1-incher. Patience, friends. Patience.

Why look at this! Samsung’s very own Galaxy Tab 10.1 decided to stop by in Beijing to greet Dell’s latest tablet. As mentioned in our hands-on post, it’s clear that the Streak 10 Pro would need to go on a little diet to match the Korean tablet’s lovely figure and weight, though the latter won’t be released in the country until some time next month. Also, there’s no doubt that Sammy will continue to ask for a premium price in exchange for the better display and portability, so our wallets will be the final judge. For now, just enjoy our quick and dirty comparison photos in the gallery below. You’re welcome.

Update: It appears that some of our readers are missing the point: the 16GB WiFi Galaxy Tab 10.1 is being sold for $499 in the US, and it’ll most likely be more expensive in China; whereas the Streak 10 Pro is priced at just ¥2,999 ($465). So again, you get what you pay for.

By now, you should be familiar with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. We’ve done countless hands-ons with the super-svelte Honeycomb slate, and even reviewed it… twice! Now it’s back, again, and this time its packing an LTE radio tuned to the frequencies of a little company known as Verizon. Outside of a few tiny cosmetic changes — the brushed, gray plastic back and the rumored Micro SIM slot up top, nothing else has changed. We won’t waste too much time rehashing what you already know, but we figured it was worth firing up the latest version, which officially went on sale today, and putting that 4G antenna to the test. Samsung to roll out Galaxy Tab 10.1 TouchWiz UX update on August 3rd in NYC, and NYC only

Everyone else will get it eventually, of course, but Samsung is once again giving folks in New York City first dibs on its latest Galaxy Tab wares. In this case, it’s the previously announced update that brings the TouchWiz UX to the tablet, and adds things like Samsung’s Live Panel, Mini Apps, and a newly redesigned Media Hub interface. That will first be available to the press during a media event on August 3rd, after which Samsung will open the doors at its Samsung Experience store to the public from 1PM to 6PM, and let any Galaxy Tab 10.1 owner side-load the update onto their device. Needless to say, we’ll be there to bring you all the details if you aren’t able to make it yourself.

Samsung’s LTE-equipped Galaxy Tab 10.1 comes to Verizon on July 28th

It’s a Galaxy Tab 10.1, but with 4G. No, not that 4G. Not even that 4G. This 4G. You know, the LTE variety, being spread around like Christmas ham by the folks at Verizon Wireless. Cosmetically, the slate offered up by Big Red is no different than the WiFi-only model that we peeked earlier in the year, but the LTE radio tucked within obviously makes it the one to get if you’re looking for top-tier speeds on the go. VZW will actually hawk two separate models LTE Tab 10.1 models (in white or grey), both of which are priced outrageously with two-year agreements: $529.99 for the 16GB model and $629.99 for the 32GB model. That’s a pretty penny (to say the least!) given the albatross that is a 24-month contract, and those who’d rather provide their own connectivity can opt for the WWAN-less Metallic Grey edition for $499.99 (16GB). Access plans start at $30 per month for 2GB, with $50 per period getting you 5GB, or $80 getting you 10GB (no mention of tethering, unfortunately). Your pickup date? Two days from now, or July 28th for the calendar-challenged.

Samsung pulls controversial Anymode Smart Case, says it never received certification

The Anymode Smart Case for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 may bear a suspicious resemblance to Apple’s iPad 2 Smart Cover, but Samsung insists it had absolutely nothing to do with it. In a blog post published today, the company responded to allegations that it tried to market a Cupertino rip-off, claiming that the accessory never received official “Designed for Samsung Mobile” certification. Samsung went on to point out that none of the cases have actually been sold, while confirming that it’s “working with Anymode to address this oversight.” In the meantime, the contentious Smart Case has been removed from Samsung’s Anymode’s site, meaning we can finally return to leading healthy, productive lives.

There were some mumblings that T-Mobile’s OG Galaxy Tab would come packing a Micro SIM, but that rumor never came to pass. Now a similar tale is being spun about Verizon’s LTE-sporting Galaxy Tab 10.1. Android Central got its green, fingerless arms on a purported image of Big Red training docs that reveals the Honeycomb slate will not use the standard-sized 4G SIMs found in the Thunderbolt, Droid Charge, Revolution — instead, it will come stuffed with a tiny 3FF card. The company has already made it abundantly clear that there will be no LTE roaming with its devices, perhaps now it’s trying to discourage users from swapping a single SIM between a phone and tablet to save cash. Or, maybe Samsung chose the format due to space constraints. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see — which hopefully won’t be much longer.

Anymode’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 case cops Apple’s fashion sense (updated)

What’s the difference between a case and a cover? The Korean company Anymode is provoking just that question with a Galaxy Tab 10.1 case (cover?) that looks awfully familiar. The Smart Case, as it’s known, comes in multiple colors, protects the tablet’s front, and folds into a triangular stand. You might be thinking that sounds remarkably like Apple’s Smart Cover, and if so, you’re not the only one. Ah, but the plot thickens: 9to5mac reports that the maker of this blatant knock-off has strong ties to Samsung. Family ties, even, as their tipster claims Sang-yong Kim, the Anymode CEO, is the nephew of Kun-Hee Lee, Sammy’s chairman. We couldn’t confirm any blood relation, which could mean we’re dealing with a cover-clone conspiracy theory. Either way, we suspect this’ll lead to more billable hours for Cupertino’s lawyers.

[Update: Samsung has responded on its official blog, distancing itself from Anymode’s product:

As a general practice, Samsung Electronics reviews and approves all accessories produced by partners before they are given the “Designed for Samsung Mobile” mark.

In this case, approval was not given to Anymode for the accessory to feature this official designation. We are working with Anymode to address this oversight and the product has already been removed from the Anymode sales website. The product has not been sold.

GalaxyTab 10.1 demo video shows off TouchWiz on Honeycomb, 'Mini apps'

Surely by now you’re mighty familiar with Samsung’s Android-conquering Galaxy Tab 10.1, but we’re still here waiting on that slate’s promised TouchWiz update. Now it’s on display, courtesy of an official video posted by the company. Whilst listening to some incredibly jazzy music that will make racing fans think they’ve accidentally booted into Gran Turismo 5, watch a disembodied hand show off some of the Honeycomb customizations that, for the most part, look fairly unobtrusive, including a bigger, friendlier settings screen. More interesting, though, is a look at the Mini Apps that are accessed by what looks to be a gesture from off the bottom of the display. Six proggies will be available at launch: a calendar, task manager, clock, note pad, calculator, and music player. We’re still not sure just when the OTA update will filter out to enable these suckers, but more importantly we’re not sure what to call them when it does. Mini Apps isn’t doing it for us, and sadly Java already has “applets” locked up tight.
