Samsung Announces The Underwhelming Galaxy Tab 3

GALAXY Tab 3 7 inch_007_3G

Samsung introduced its latest tablet today, the Galaxy Tab 3, and it’s clear that the Tab line is destined to play a distinct second fiddle to the Galaxy Note brand. The Tab 3 sounds like it could’ve been released a year or two ago, with a 7-inch 1024×600 display at just 169 PPI, a 1.2GHz dual core processor and a 3 megapixel rear-facing camera.

The Tab 3 also has cellular connectivity in one version, but caps out at 3G and doesn’t offer an LTE option, and it’s running Android 4.1. There are two memory options, at 8 and 16GB respectively, though that’s expandable via Micro SD. The Tab 3 improves on the Tab 2 7.0 with a thinner bezel, borrowing design styling from the Galaxy Note series. The Wi-Fi version will be available in May, and the cellular-capable model goes on sale in June.

Samsung is clearly streamlining its tablet line here, since the Tab 3 naming indicates we probably won’t see a follow-up to the Tab 2 10.1. The Android OEM has moved a lot of the focus on its higher-end Galaxy Note line when it comes to tablets, like the recently introduced Galaxy Note 8.0. The Note 8.0 has a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and a 5 megapixel rear camera, plus an 8-inch 1280×800 display.

There’s no retail price for the Galaxy Tab 3 as of yet, but the Galaxy Note 8.0 is $399 so expect it to come in under that, as it’s less impressive under the hood and also lacks S-Pen integration. The Tab line is likely Samsung’s way of staying competitive with cheap, small tables like the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, but I wouldn’t expect this to light a fire under that many consumers.

Samsung Rumored To Update Galaxy Tab 2 To Android 4.2.2

Samsung Rumored To Update Galaxy Tab 2 To Android 4.2.2If you own a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and you were wondering about the status of an update, you might be pleased to learn that according to SamMobile, they have received a tip from their insider who confirms to them that the Galaxy Tab 2 will be updated to Android 4.1.2, and the updates will keep coming until Android 4.2.2. We’re not sure how many updates there will be in between but that’s good news as it will no doubt extend the use of the tablet just by a little bit. Of course if you’re already pleased with your Galaxy Tab the way it is, then this will be a bonus.

According to their source, Samsung is currently testing the update on first-gen Galaxy Tab devices, although we’re not sure if this means that there is a possibility that first-gen Galaxy Tab devices will be updated in a similar fashion as well. No specific dates were given, but their insider claims that Samsung is hoping to issue the Android 4.1.2 update in Q2, followed by Android 4.2.2 in Q3. Either that or it will be straight to Android in Q3, skipping Android 4.1.2. We’ll take this with a grain of salt for now, but Galaxy Tab 2 owners, is this good news for you guys?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 appears in benchmarks prepped for MWC

Today a few benchmark results have appeared on the web showing off a Samsung tablet device that will likely be appearing at Mobile World Congress 2013 for the first time in full. This device appears to be one of 3 or 4 new models appearing soon according to SamMobile, their tipster letting it be known that “Santos” is the code-name attached to the whole new Galaxy Tab 3 lineup. This model could be the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, or the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, though the last entry on this list has also reportedly been dropped from final production.

If you have a peek at the benchmarks as posted by PocketNow, you’ll find that the product number is GT-P3200. This number lines up with the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 which has been tipped to have been dropped from the final lineup. It could be that the original tipster showing those product names had information leading them to believe that this model would be dropped and instead it only needed additional testing before final confirmation. If that’s the case, it would make sense that the device would just be popping up in final benchmarks now.

With these benchmark results in effect we’ve got a 7-inch display on a tablet with 800 x 1280 pixel resolution, not all that fantastic, but certainly not low-end. You’ve also got Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean and a processor (with an unknown amount of cores) running at 1.5Ghz. This machine will likely be an incremental update resting on the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 which we reviewed mid-2012.

Have a peek at the Galaxy Tab timeline below and let us know what you’re expecting from the immediate future in the Samsung tablet lineup. We’re expecting to see several tablets and tablet-like devices to be appearing at Mobile World Congress 2013 while the smartphones and Galaxy Note devices smaller than 8 inches to be revealed at separate events. Sound reasonable to you?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 images leak before MWC reveal

This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about Samsung’s rumored Galaxy Tab 3. Not too long ago, we were treated with another leak that revealed two different screen sizes that the company will shell out. Today, though, we’re seeing actual photos of the device that give us a better idea of what we’re in for before its possible reveal at MWC next month.

Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-3-jpg

From the size and proportions of the tablet seen in the photos, we’re guessing it’s the 7-inch variant of the Galaxy Tab 3 (with the other being a 10-inch model), but nothing in the images point to one or the other. We’re guessing that both sizes of the tablet will be identical in design for the most part.

Both of the photos include the actual device and the box that it comes in, along with a model number and everything. However, the full model number isn’t completely legible, but it starts with “GT-P,” which is what most Samsung tablets usually start out with. The photos also don’t show the device on or running, so we can’t get a closer look at the UI just yet.

So far, no specs have been revealed, other than the 7-inch and 10-inch size variants. Until we see more leaks of photos or even video, it looks like we may have to wait until Mobile World Congress in Barcelona before we get a real glimpse at the thing. Of course, we’ll be there live covering the event, so be sure to stick around for MWC coverage.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 Spy Shots Hit The Internet

galaxy tab 8 leak Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 Spy Shots Hit The InternetMore spy shots of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 has just hit the Internet, and it is rather amazing to realize that they are not really that blurry, which means the person snapping it had plenty of time to steady the camera, or he/she had a really good CMOS sensor built into whatever device he/she used to shoot these shots. Interestingly enough, there was someone using it at the time it was being shot.

From what we can garner from the spy shots, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 does seem to resemble a similar design language that looks similar to the Galaxy S3 as well as the larger sized Galaxy Note 2, sporting an elliptical home button that is placed at the bottom when the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is held in portrait mode. The stylus will slide into a silo that is located on the right hand side, and you can choose from 16GB or 32GB of storage space, and just in case you figure out that this is not enough, a microSD memory card slot would come in handy. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 will ship with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean right out of the box.

Samsung’s 8-Inch Galaxy Note Tablet Is Reportedly Set For Its February MWC Debut

galnote103

Well, it certainly seems like a good time to be in the market for an Android tablet — Sony has just announced its attractive new Tablet Z, and it seems that Samsung really does have another Note tab up its sleeves.

According to Korean news outlet iNews 24, Samsung Mobile chief JK Shin has confirmed that the company’s rumored 8-inch Galaxy Note tablet will indeed be making an appearance at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

At this point there’s still no official word on what kind of internals we can expect from the 8-inch version, but that hasn’t kept the rumor mill from churning as it always does. Should you believe the reports floating around out there, the new Note tablet could ship with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, 2GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3 megapixel front-facer. Curiously, there’s been very little chatter about what sort of processor will drive this package, but it shouldn’t be long before all those details are made available for us to chew on more thoughtfully.

Still, this is a welcome morsel of news from Samsung — it had its share of shortcomings, but I was generally very fond of the Samsung’s 10-inch Galaxy Note — to me, it remains one of the most thoughtful implementations of the Note concept (and its string of recent software updates haven’t hurt either). That said, scaling down that S-Pen-friendly display to a more portable 8 inches is a smart (if not unexpected) move, and could help Samsung fight back not only against Apple’s iPad mini, but popular devices like the Nexus 7 as well.

That report also goes on to say that people shouldn’t expect to see Samsung’s oft-rumored Galaxy S IV on display in Barcelona, which isn’t exactly a shocker considering Samsung’s recent track record. The Korean consumer electronics giant showed off the 10.1-inch Galaxy Note tablet last year in lieu of any flagship smartphones at MWC last year (though the team ultimately went back to the drawing board for a few months before actually releasing the thing), and saved its Galaxy S III for a lavish spectacle in London later in the year. I wouldn’t expect Samsung to buck that trend any time soon, but that’s just fine by me — if some persistent murmurs are any indication, the GSIV will make for a hell of show once the time is right.
