PlayStation 3 12GB edition hits USA Sony store for those who can’t wait

It’s high time a gamer decides to jump in on the console gaming universe this season as both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 see a re-invigoration of interest now that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are about to arrive. One fine example of this is in the 12GB PlayStation 3 – a […]

Xbox One season pass guarantee detailed for Xbox 360 users

Microsoft has taken to the Xbox.com news feed quite a bit lately, clarifying and otherwise tweaking information related to its upcoming Xbox One, such as digital game sharing and Home Gold. Such was the case today, with Microsoft addressing concerns regarding season passes and what happens when Xbox 360 owners upgrade to the next-generation console. […]

Amazon Android gaming console tipped for arrival this year

This seems almost out of left field and very sudden, but it’s said that Amazon is working on an Android-powered gaming console, similar to the OUYA, that will see a launch by the end of this year, possibly in time for the holiday shopping season. Details are obviously scarce at this point, but it seems […]

PlayStation 4 developer console appears: confirms original vision

It’s not the most in-depth bit of photography you’ll see today, but for those of you looking to see the PlayStation 4 as it sits in the hands of developers across the planet this summer, this may well be the best you’re going to get. What we’re looking at below (below the first image, that is) is a “leaked” image of the PlayStation 4′s front – or back – not that it matters – as photographed by an intrepid attendee of either Jimmy Fallon‘s showing of said device or E3 2013.

Now we just need to bust open a cabinet at SDCC and we’ll see if they all match! These developer units use the most basic of basics for their outer casing, showing LED lights for on-states and big ol’ bumpers here and there so no drops can harm it. Not that you’ll be wanting to explain to Sony how you dropped your early edition of the PlayStation 4, mind you, but it does seem more hardcore than your average built-it-yourself PC.

Below you’re seeing the image “leaked” today via Gizmodo with a couple different units complete with high-tech tape telling their contents. Above you’re seeing the developer unit shown back in February which was originally only given attention due to its inclusion of the new dual-shock controller. Always remember to look at the whole image!

And for those of you that want to see the final PlayStation 4 hardware – at least as far as Sony’s shared thus far – there’s this sharp piece of work right here. We’ve had our own close-up look at the PlayStation 4 more than once, complete with toggle-less lights and edges so sharp they’ll cut your face open. Make sure you stay tuned as we see how this device fares a the biggest comic convention of the year!

Street Fighter IV DLC brings five new characters to the fold [UPDATE]

With the newest update to the game Street Fighter IV, you’re going to see five new characters, four of which have been revealed this afternoon. While the creators of Tekken aim to add a fighting salmon to the arena, four of the five new characters coming to Street Fighter IV have been revealed to be fan favorites. While we’re not expecting a handheld seafaring creature to be attacking our heroes in this season’s upgrade, the creators of this game have promised an addition “never seen in street fighter before.”

Super-Street-Fighter-IV

With the addition of Hugo, Poison, Elena, and Rolento to the mix, the folks at Capcom’s Evo 2013 panel have thrown a bit of a curve-ball the audience’s way. While each of these first four characters have appeared in previous editions of the game on multiple platforms, the fifth will be one never before played by a user in the wild. At the moment it’s not clear whether this means the character will be entirely new or a translation of a character from the Street Fighter universe to a real fighter as never executed before.

The update will also be bringing on more than just the five new characters. Also in store for users are all previously released costume packs – so good thing you hesitated! This update will also be adding on special costumes designed by Udon Entertainment for each of the five new characters – but only if you pre-order the update before it’s out on the market.

This update will be released through all standard channels and through the NESiCAxLive arcade network in Japan soon. Both Super Street Fighter IV and the still relatively new updated Arcade Edition will have the ability to add this DLC to their iterations of the game. Stay tuned for the rest of the details – including a release date – soon!

UPDATE: This update will be appearing for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC for a cool $15 USD, and you’ll be seeing it in early 2014.

UPDATE 2: Gameplay video released!

China reportedly to lift ban on video game consoles

Back on January 28, we heard a rumor that China was considering lifting a ban on gaming consoles, something that was reported by Reuters. It has been six months, and now we’re hearing this again, only the sources claim that the lift will go in effect with a stipulation that game makers must produce the consoles in Shanghai’s free-trade zone.

In the summer of 2000, the Chinese government elected to ban video game consoles due to concern of the effects they could have on the mental health of its young citizens, particularly concerning violent video games. Under the ban, video game consoles can not be sold, with only components being authorized for importing for devices meant to be exported again out of the country.

As such, the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and other modern gaming devices have not been officially available in the country. This hasn’t prevented many users from acquiring them anyway, but for more than the last 12 years, those buyers have been required to buy the devices and games off the black market. This will be changing in the near future, assuming the sources are correct.

Said one of the unnamed sources: “[The video game makers] still need approval from the culture ministry and other relevant government bodies for their products, which I think is reasonable, because the government wants to make sure the content of your games is not too violent or politically sensitive for young people.”

As such, it can be expected that some games will be barred from sale in the country, which isn’t surprising. As we mentioned, the game makers – such as Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft – will be required to build their consoles in the Shanghai free-trade zone. Said one of the other sources: “You may think the game console is a small deal in the whole policy package for Shanghai, but it’s an interesting instance showing how China wants to open up to foreign investors.”

BlueStacks GamePop Mini aims to pick up where original console left off

When a company such as BlueStacks introduces a product with a non-traditional pricing structure (like the one we’re seeing with their gaming console “GamePop”), it’s not the easiest thing in the world for the general public to accept. “You’re giving me a piece of hardware free, but it doesn’t do anything unless I pay a

Key Lime Pie console and smartwatch showcase could demo Android’s UI expansion

We heard yesterday of rumors that Google is preparing a host of new devices, including their own Android-powered game console, smartwatch, and a refreshed media streaming device, similar to the Nexus Q. One of the more interesting tidbits, however, is that these devices could be running the next version of Android: Key Lime Pie, which

OUYA Gets Its Official Retail Release, But The $99 Game Console Still Hasn’t Reached Every Early Backer

main-photo3

The Android-powered OUYA gaming console is celebrating its official first day of general retail availability today, a major milestone to be sure for the Kickstarter-funded piece of hardware. Many thought it would never make it this far, and that it would be vaporware before anyone actually got a chance to go and purchase one, but founder Julie Uhrman and her team have made good on making sure it hit store shelves in the U.S., U.K. and Canada, listed right alongside the marquee consoles by Sony, Xbox and Nintendo.

The $99 device offers over 170 games, all of which must have some kind of free-to-try component, along with media apps like Plex and TuneIn. OUYA also touts its large committed developer base, which has over 17,000 studios and game creators signed on to deliver content for the console, including Double Fine Productions. The console ships with one controller, and you can add another for $49.99. As of this writing, the launch seems to be going decently well, as Amazon.com is already showing the console as out of stock.

So far, OUYA hasn’t received the best of early reviews. Most have found its user experience lacking, and the pre-release version was definitely a “beta” release. Virtually everyone who got their hands on a backer edition expressed hope that the console would receive more polish, along with hardware fixes when it actually shipped. And now that it has, critics are going to go back to the well for a second drink, in the hopes that the OUYA team has made some considerable advances in the ensuing two month period.

Yet not all backers could even form an early opinion about the console. OUYA employed a staggered shipping strategy to reach all of its backers, with a timeline that was supposed to ensure everyone got a console before they become generally available. OUYA’s Uhrman sent out an update to backers this morning apologizing for not getting the console in backer hands before the public release, and shifting blame to their distribution partner, to DHL, and to backers with located internationally.

Delays for backer reward shipments on Kickstarter are nothing new, but it is very rare to see a product hit general market availability before getting out to the project’s first supporters. OUYA appears to be stumbling out of the gate in more ways than one, but at least now the product is out there in non-beta form, and ready to prove itself as a real consumer product, or, alternatively, to fail in the court of public opinion.

Xbox One backtracks on game sharing and always-connected internet

As the Xbox One suffered a significant amount of negative feedback from those that, thus far, weren’t happy with the machine’s rules surrounding disk sharing and always-connected internet, Microsoft and the Xbox team have turned over a new leaf. This afternoon straight through Microsoft’s own Xbox Wire portal, Don Mattrick, President of Interactive Entertainment Business,
