Faulty connectors push Retron 5 game console into early 2014 launch

Everyone who wants to snag Hyperkin’s Retron 5 this holiday season may want to look elsewhere for now, because the retro gaming console won’t arrive in time for Santa’s visit. Unfortunately, Hyperkin scrubbed the (already delayed) December 10th launch date after discovering faulty cartridge connectors in units already packed for shipping. The Retron 5, which we took for a spin at E3 this year, magically combines compatibility with several ancient gaming system cartridges, including those for the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis (plus Master System with a converter) and Game Boy Advance. While we bet this news breaks a lot of retro gamers’ hearts, we hope they don’t throw out those vintage games just yet. Sure, it’ll take time to ensure all units are in working order, but the firm aims to ship out the first consoles within the first quarter of 2014.

Assassin’s Creed: Pirates launches for phones and tablets on December 5th

Sure, it’s not the first Assassin’s Creed title to make it to mobile, but hey, it’s the first one with pirates to hit your handset. On December 5th, you’ll be able to download Assassin’s Creed: Pirates on Android and iOS for $5. You’ll be playing as captain, naturally, commanding a pirate ship and combatting with other vessels while looking for buried treasure. It will also feature characters from Ubisoft’s other pirate-themed title, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. According to the game developer, the title uses a new 3D graphics engine made specifically for phones and tablets — don’t expect a PC or console-compatible version. While you’ll have to wait till next week to start playing, you can watch the trailer here now.

Major League Gaming launches MLG.TV online network to stream e-sports in high definition

Major League Gaming launches MLGTV online network to stream esports in high definition

Major League Gaming’s been tinkering with better ways to show and monetize its Call of Duty and Starcraft battles for years, occasionally showing up on ESPN and utilizing myriad online streaming solutions to get its premium content to the people. However, MLG decided that YouTube and its ilk aren’t enough, and so has launched its very own online network, MLG.TV, to better cater to e-sports fans (and pull in bigger ad dollars, of course). TechCrunch reports that this new platform, aside from streaming up to 1080p video, will also have social sharing capabilities and Twitter-based chat. While exclusively an online portal, MLG.TV is borrowing some ideas from broadcast television. It’ll have weekly shows (like the recently debuted SportsCenter-esqe eSports Report) at specific times, and the plan is to build out a TV-like programming schedule as new shows are created.

Ouya’s new all-white console comes with double the storage

With the PlayStation 4 now on sale and the Xbox One hitting stores this week, news of Ouya’s latest console refresh comes at a busy time for gamers. With holidays closing in, it’s unveiled a new limited edition all-white case for its Android-powered console, also doubling the system’s internal storage to 16GB to store more games and important media. Ouya has already opened pre-orders with a $129.99 price tag ($30 more than the 8GB model), and if you order before December 8th, you should have it by Christmas. While the white model, with its expanded storage, is only available in North America, all is not lost — Ouya’s latest software update will bring support for USB storage (and many other new features) to older consoles when it arrives later this month.

PopCap Games for 50% Off

This article was written on December 21, 2007 by CyberNet.

PopCap Games is known for their collection of fun-to-play casual games which can be played in a limited version (for free), or the full version by paying a fee. Some of their most popular games include Peggle, Bejeweled, and Chuzzle which would all normally cost your $19.95 if you wanted the full version. And who doesn’t want the full version? While these games are cheaper than some, the $20 price tag can really ad up if there are multiple games you’d like.  That’s why you’ll probably want to take advantage of PopCap’s latest offer…

Running until January 3rd, you can go to PopCap Games and purchase ANY game for half-price.  That means Peggle is $9.97, as is Chuzzle, Bejeweled, and Zuma. What a deal, huh? And remember, these games just aren’t for PC.  There are some available for PC, Mac, Xbox, Xbox 360, cell-phones, PDAs, and other mobile devices.

CyberNotes: Friv.com – Endless Games for Your Enjoyment

This article was written on May 02, 2008 by CyberNet.

Fun Friday

It’s once again Friday, so we decided to have some fun. What better way than to take a break and play a game or two? One of our readers, Radu (thanks Radu!) recently sent us a tip to checkout www.friv.com which has over 200 games available for your enjoyment. These aren’t complex games by any means, and you probably won’t be spending hours playing them, but they are fun. Today we’ll just point out a few of the games that we came across that we enjoyed, but feel free to checkout all 220 of them here! If ever you’re in need of a time-waster, this will be it…

Oh, and before we get started, we just thought it was worth mentioning how the site operates. It’s described as a system of “one in one out, so when a new game is added it simply replaces the least popular one in the existing selection.”

Unfortunately we can’t link to any of the individual games because of how the site is designed, so we’ll include the icon that you need to look for next to each game.

Pool pool-1.png

The classic game of 9 Ball Pool is one that many of you will enjoy. If you’ve played any type of pool on the computer before, you’ll know how this one works. You left click your mouse and hold the cue to drag it with your mouse. The more you drag the cute back, the harder you’ll hit the ball. You’re given five minutes to play and the only downside is that you can’t play against the computer or anyone else.

Arcatris tetris.png

This is essentially the game of Tetris, another fan-favorite. Use your arrow keys to move and rotate the pieces, and the space bar to send the pieces quickly down to the bottom. The music is a little annoying on this one so you might want to mute it…

Tennis tennis.png

Ready for a quick game of tennis? It’s not as easy as it looks, especially if the computer’s skill level is set high. You end up using the arrow keys and the spacebar, and you can play either an exhibition or a tournament. The player who wins by 3 games wins.

Orbox or.png

Orbox can get difficult pretty quickly, so beware! Using the arrow keys, you’ll guide the blinking blue square to the red square, being sure not to fall into outer-space.

Cobacoli cobacoli.png

Cobacoli starts off a little slow and may take you a little bit to get the hang of it, but it’s a lot of fun once you do. Using your mouse, you will click to shoot a while ball to hit a colored ball. You goal is to hit the colored line with the same color ball. Now here’s the thing, if your white ball hits a colored line, you lose one of your shots. At the later stages of the game, this can get pretty tricky!

Microsoft Xbox One now available for test drive in stores

From now until Nov. 22, Microsoft is letting the public test drive the new Xbox One in all 75 of Microsoft’s own branded retail stores in the United States and Canada. This is not the first time Xbox One has been officially available for public gameplay previous to the next-gen console’s official launch date, but […]

Microsoft Shows You The Entire Xbox One Experience With Video Tour Ahead Of Nov. 22 Launch

xbox-one

Microsoft has posted an extensive, 12-minute video walkthrough of what it’s like to use the Xbox One, including showing off its Live TV, Skype, game DVR and biometric sign-in features, among others. It’s almost like you’re using it yourself, except it’s actually Xbox CMO Yusuf Mehdi and Xbox Corporate VP Marc Whitten providing you with the vicarious experience.

Bing and Skype both get cameos (the Skype tracking at around 6:20 is pretty cool), and you can see just how easy it is to switch between things like box scores, playing an Xbox game, chatting with friends and watching streaming content from Hulu Plus and Netflix. The easy switching alone looks like a decent reason to upgrade from previous generation devices, which almost always required quitting one thing entirely to start up another, rather than making it easy to pop between activities.

I still haven’t been swayed enough to lay down cash for a launch day console, of either the Xbox or the PlayStation variety, but I have to say, the more I see, the more I’m impressed.

Playing Darts Is So Much Easier With a Slingshot Sniper Rifle

Not satisfied with the dart-launching pistol he whipped up last year, Joerg Sprave went back to the drawing board and came up with a dart-shooting sniper rifle that all but guarantees him domination at his local pub’s dartboard.
