Call of Duty: Ghosts poster tips early holiday release

We first heard about solid details on the next Call of Duty game last week, thanks to a leaked Target promo ad. However, while Target listed the game for a November 5 release date, we took that with a heavy grain of salt, since retailers don’t always get the release date right. However, according to a leaked poster of the game, November 5 is indeed the date that we’ll see the game release.

IGN ended up getting a hold of the leaked promo poster from GameStop, and it lists November 5 at the bottom. Furthermore, Activision recently launched a teaser website for the upcoming game, which displays a skull that is most likely referring to the mask that Lt. Simon “Ghost” Riley wore in past Call of Duty titles.

The title of the game, along with the teaser website hints at the possibility that Call of Duty: Ghosts will follow Lt. Riley as the main protagonist in the game. The man shown on the box art and promo posters could actually be Ghost himself, as it looks like he is pulling off the skull mask that he iconically wears.

According to the game’s box art, it seems it will release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows, and the Wii U. IGN says that an official reveal of Call of Duty: Ghosts will be expected tomorrow, so you can be sure that we’ll hear more details about the game real soon. In the meantime, we’ll ponder over the implications of a Ghost-based Call of Duty game.

Microsoft offering free Xbox Live Gold this weekend in the UK

Microsoft is giving UK gamers another chance to take advantage of some free Xbox Live Gold this weekend. The company just recently offered the same deal to those in the US and other regions in the world, except for the UK and Europe. They had a free weekend last month, and are now getting the opportunity to go at it once again.

Xbox-Live

If you have an Xbox 360, but have never taken advantage of Xbox Live Gold, this would be a great time to check it out for yourself and see what all the fuss is about. You’ll save yourself $60/year for the membership, but if you decide after this weekend that you want to hop in full time, you can actually pick up Gold memberships for as low as $35 in some cases.

Xbox Live Gold allows you to play against your friends, as well as access different services like Netflix, Spotify, MLB.TV, and a handful of other apps in the dashboard. Granted, you’ll still have to pay for each service individually, but it’s a small price to pay if you want to use your gaming console as a home theater solution as well.

The free weekend promotion starts at noon UK time on Friday, May 3, and ends at midnight on that Sunday night/Monday morning. Typically, Microsoft has ended their free weekends well into the day on Monday, so having the free weekend end at Midnight on Sunday night seems a little odd. Nonetheless, that should give you plenty of time to clear your calendar and get to gaming.

Minecraft creator launches Drop typing game

Minecraft creator Markus Persson has just launched a new free game called Drop, which tests gamers’ typing skills as they type in the corresponding blinking letters that appear on the screen. However, typing in a wrong letter will speed up the game, and going too slow will result in the game being over, so be sure to hone in on your typing skills before getting in on this game.

drop

The game runs on Unity, so you’ll need to download and install the Unity web player if you don’t already have it, but once you’re locked and loaded, the game will load and you’ll be ready to play right away. The game starts when you begin typing the letters that show up on the screen, and the letter that you need to type will blink and be highlighted.

Persson (a.k.a. “Notch”) quietly launched the new game this morning via Twitter, and he says that Drop was influenced by a factor of things, including Super Hexagon, the ending of Fez, and weirdly enough, his apartment ceiling, which we can clearly see in the game. Just like with Super Hexagon, Drop is an endless runner type of game, so the goal is to go as long as you can without losing.

If you’re wondering about Persson’s other game that he announced last year, Ox10c is still being developed and Persson still plans on releasing it, so if you’re excited about getting in on some first-person shooter action from the creator of Minecraft, you’ll still have that chance real soon.

The Witcher 3 forgoes multiplayer and quick-time events

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which will be released sometime in 2014 for next-gen consoles and the PC, will forgo both multiplayer capabilities as well as quick-time events. Konrad Tomaszkiewicz and CD Projekt RED (the developer of The Witcher 3) spoke with Forbes about The Witcher 3 and they stated that the game had no place for multiplayer. He also stated that quick-time events were being left out because all they resulted in was frustration for players.

The Witcher 3 forgoes multiplayer and quick-time events

There were some talks previously that multiplayer was being considered for the game, however, Tomaszkiewicz stated that instead, the final saga of Geralt will be focus on an “epic, story driven, single player, open world RPG experience.” He assures players will get at least 50 hours of gaming from the main storyline as well as 50 hours of gaming from doing side quests or exploring the new open world.

Tomaszkiewicz said the team decided to remove quick-time events altogether from the game due to all of the negative feedback they received from gamers. He also said that while quick-time events fit in with some games, like Uncharted, it didn’t fit too well with The Witcher. He says that the only way to implement quick-time events into games is to make it simple to the point “where you don’t even realize that you’ve just finished a QTE sequence.”

Also, to the gratefulness of gamers everywhere, The Witcher 3, as well as CD Projekt RED’s future games, will always be DRM-free. We all know the nightmare DRM can cause, and so does CD Projekt. Tomaskiewicz says that DRM “is the worst thing in the gaming industry.” Like many gamers have said, DRM limits their rights to play the games they paid for. Tomaskiewicz says, “What if you lose your connection beacuse of your internet provider? You can’t play anymore.” He says that DRM punishes users more than it stops online piracy.

CD Projekt RED will release The Witcher 3 in 2014 for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox 720 all at the same time, something they hadn’t done before with previous Witcher releases. It will be the final chapter in Geralt’s story, however, there may still be a chance that The Witcher universe will return and with new characters. Unfortunately, Tomaszkiewicz says that there are no promises of them adding character customization to the game.

Xbox 720 rumored to come with PS4-like sharing features

Microsoft‘s next-generation Xbox gaming console, which the company just confirmed the other day, is the latest to be involved in the rumor hype, and we certainly haven’t seen a shortage of speculation making its way around. Today, it’s been rumored that Microsoft will be emphasizing sharing features with the Xbox 720, and will even be taking a page out of the PS4 book by including their own “Share” button on the Xbox 720 controller.

xbox-720-concept

This supposed share button will allow gamers to upload any gaming highlights to streaming services such as YouTube and Ustream, as well as share clips to Facebook, Twitter, and other social web services. This feature seems to be practically identical to Sony‘s own sharing feature on the PlayStation 4, which the company detailed at the unveil event back in February.

The report comes from Polygon, where their sources say that the video game capture system will work like a DVR, and it can be turned on or off if need be. Gamers can also set it up where the console automatically begins recording when certain in-game events happen. However, Microsoft is said to still be hammering out the details as of right now.

These same sources also point out that the Xbox 720 will require to be in an always-on state. We’ve heard numerous rumors about this before, and it seems to be picking up steam. The function will act as an anti-piracy tool, making sure that all games loaded up on the console are legit by checking with Microsoft’s servers for validation.

Electronic Arts confirms more layoffs on the way

Electronic Arts sent out an “organizational update” today notifying the public of another round of layoffs made by the game publisher. No specifics were mentioned, but it certainly seems that Electronic Arts is having some tough times, and a lot of re-organization is going on for the Redwood City-based company.

ea-logo

In the update on the company’s website, Electronic Arts notes that “in recent weeks, EA has aligned all elements of its organizational structure behind priorities in new technologies and mobile. This has led to some difficult decisions to reduce the workforce in some locations.” Again, no specifics, but we should hear come May 7 when the company announces fiscal year earnings.

According to Kotaku, it’s said that Electronic Arts has let go of as much as 10% of its workforce. The video game publisher didn’t comment on the headcount, but we’re guessing that 10% is about 1,000 employees, give or take a hundred or so. That’s certainly a lot of people, and that’s less people working on great games like The Sims and the Madden NFL series.

Electronic Arts has had a rough few months, however. The SimCity launch went exactly the opposite of what the company was expecting, and along with the SimCity fiasco mixed in with the DRM controversy, the publisher landed itself the “Worst Company in America” award for the second year in a row. Luckily, CEO John Riccitiello got out of there when he could.

Gaming subscription trend expands as Valve joins the party

Valve’s Steam digital distribution gaming platform has added support for gaming subscription plans, allowing gamers the ability to manage their subscription-based games through the gaming service. The new feature offers a simple way to sign up for games and manage payments. The first and only game so far to use the new feature is Darkfall Unholy Wars.

Screen Shot 2013-04-25 at 12.22.14 PM

More games will follow in the future, but for now, only Darkfall Unholy Wars is compatible — most likely to just test out the new system before rolling it out for more games. The service will allow you to manage subscriptions of all your Steam-based subscription video games through Steam itself, which is certainly nifty, and should give gamers a bit of flexibility and control.

To sign up for a Steam Subscription Plan, you’ll have to find a subscription-based game in the Steam store, and from there you just select the plan that you want and purchase the plan (rather than just a one-time fee for most games). It seems it’s a lot simpler than buying individual plans for multiple subscription-based games.

You can also cancel subscriptions from your Steam account, and Steam will list all of the subscriptions that you have. From there, you can just select the one you want to cancel and you’ll be all set. That same page will also let you renew subscriptions. Currently, Steam doesn’t offer the chance to gift a subscription plan, but we’re guessing they’ll come out with that sometime in the future.

Iron Man 3 mobile game capitalizes on pre-movie hype

Gameloft has been teasing its Iron Man 3 game for a few weeks now by releasing a couple of trailers showing off some of the new features. However, the game is now available for your disposal, and it comes just one week before the theatrical release of the movie with the same name, which is set for May 3.

slashgear-0000

The game features an endless-runner aspect, where you fly through the sky defeating various enemies while trying not to get yourself killed. You’ll take on four villains from the Iron Man comic book series, including Crimson Dynamo, Ezekiel Stane, Living Laser, and M.O.D.O.K., all of which will provide a bit of challenge in order to get to the next round.

Your character (Tony Stark) will also be responsible for running Stark Industries and you’ll be able to research and develop up to 18 Iron Man suits that you can wear and fly around in. The game also offers three different locations to keep you occupied, which include Malibu Shores, New York City, and China.

slashgear-0001

The game is free and is available now for both iOS and Android, but you’ll also be able to spend money on weapon upgrades, as well as special tricks and “HP”. These come in the form of in-app purchases, so while the game is free, you’ll ultimately have to pay money if you want to get through the game quicker.

Nintendo skipping E3 2013 press conference

To no one’s real surprise, Nintendo has confirmed that they won’t be holding a press conference during E3 2013 coming up in June, and they won’t be announcing any new hardware. Instead, the company plans to “announce and have people experience” their software, which could at least mean we’ll see more Wii U features make their debut at the annual gaming expo.

wii-u

The company addressed the news in its latest quarterly earnings briefing today, and while they don’t plan to release any new hardware, they did mention that they’ll be announcing new Wii U games, although they weren’t clear if that would be at E3 or just in the general future. Nonetheless, we can expect some new titles from the company very soon.

Furthermore, Nintendo is at least planning to host a few smaller private events during E3, one of which will be for American distributors and another will be a private hands-on event for media. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata isn’t planning on speaking at these events, which isn’t too surprising, as he didn’t present at E3 last year either.

It’s particularly sad that one of the big three gaming console makers won’t be appearing in a big way during the year’s largest gaming expo, but it’s really no surprise, since many companies are beginning to drop out of conventions in favor of their own events to announce new products. Microsoft backed out of CES a couple years ago, with Chinese consumer electronics maker Hisense taking their place.

Draw Something 2 aims to be Zynga’s saving grace

Zynga has released the sequel to one of its best games of all time, and they’re fittingly calling it Draw Something 2. The new Pictionary-style game brings more social features, new drawing tools, and a personal gallery that looks to one-up the original installment. The game is available now in iTunes, and it comes with a free version, as well as an ad-free $2.99 flavor.

ds2

Aside from the new social features and additional drawing tools, the game promises over 5,000 new words, as well as a free draw mode that you can casually play around with without the need to compete against someone — great for practicing up on your digital finger-painting skills in your spare time.

The original Draw Something game was a huge success at launch, with the developer recently announcing that the game hit 100 million downloads in its first year, and it quickly became the number one social game in the world. Draw Something was initially developed by OMGPOP, but they were eventually bought out by Zynga after the raving success.

However, Zynga has been struggling lately, and the company is continually going downhill. With the massive success that is Draw Something, it’s possible that the sequel could be the company’s saving grace, but as gameplay of Draw Something has slowly started to decline, we’re not quite sure what success Draw Something 2 will see.
